PHOTOS OF HERMAN HESSE'S LIFE ON DISPLAY OCT. 20-NOV. 3 AT UM

MISSOULA--

Photographs depicting the life and work of German-born artist and author

Herman Hesse (pronounced Hessa) will be on display for two weeks beginning Saturday (Oct. 20) at the University of Montana in Missoula.

The exhibit, which will be open to the public without charge from 2-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays in the Gallery of Visual Arts in Turner Ha11, was prepared by the Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany, with the cooperation of the Schiller

National Museum in Marbach, Germany.

Hesse was born in 1877 in Calw, the Black Forest, Wurttemberg. During his life he engaged in a number of artistic activities, including literature, poetry, watercolor and pen-and-ink drawing, and painting. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature and the

Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt/Main in 1946.

His published books include "Beneath the ~Jheel ,'' 11 Gertrude, 11 11Siddhartha,''

Hesse titled a photograph taken by his third son, r~artin, as "Rainmaker," identifying himself with Turu the Rainmaker in 11 t1agister Ludi . 11

In the fall of 1923 Hesse acquired Swiss citizenship and in the early 1930s he moved to Montagnola near Lugano, Switzerland, where he died in 1962.
