Rethinam¹ Abstract Cocoa pod borer Conopomorpha cramerella Snellen is an important pest of cocoa. Its recent invasion of cocoa in Papua New Guinea is threatening the sustainable coconut-cocoa cropping system. C. cramerella occurs only in South-East Asia and the western Pacific. It has been the single most important limiting factor to cocoa production in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. C. cramerella attacks cocoa, Theobroma cacao; rambutan, Nephelium lappaceum; cola, Cola acuminate; pulasan, Nephelium mutabile; kasai, Albizia retusa, nam-nam,Cynometra cauliflora; litchi (Litchi chinensis); longan (Dimocarpus longan) and taun, Pometia pinnata. The possible mode of its spread is through seed pods/fruits carried from previously infested regions. However, there is possibility of local adaptations of rambutan-feeders or nam-nam-feeders to cocoa. Females lay their eggs (50-100) on the surface of the unripe pods (more than five cm in length), which hatch in about 3-7 days and the emerging larvae tunnel their way to the center of the pod where they feed for about 14-18 days before chewing their way out of the pod to pupate. The pupal stage lasts 6- 8 days. The larval feeding results in pods that may ripen prematurely, with small, flat beans, often stuck together in a mass of dried mucilage. The beans from seriously infested pods are completely unusable and in heavy infestation over half the potential crop can be lost. Sutami no 36A, Surakarta 57126, Indonesia Received : 14 December 2009 Accepted: 2 February 2010 Abstract This research aimed to obtain phenotypic information based on morphological character of Jogorogo Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.). This research was conducted with direct observation through primary and secondary data recording, and documenting parts of Jogorogo Mangosteen plant specifically, that was, in vegetative part: stalk and leave, as well as generative part: flower, fruit and seed. Jogorogo Mangosteen may reach hundreds years of life span, it had an average height of 9 meters, stalk diameter of 1 meter and crown diameter of 6 meter. The tree crown of Jogorogo Mangosteen plant was triangular in shape, with horizontal and irregular branching pattern and various densities. The leaves of Jogorogo Mangosteen were elliptic. The tip of the leaf was pointed, the base of the leaf was blunt, and the leaf edge was flat with the smooth and shining surface. The flower of Jogorogo Mangosteen was a hermaphrodit and a perfect flower. The fruit was small with 59 grams weight/flower with 4.5 cm long and 4.45 cm wide. The fruit was purple- blackish with the continuous fruit ripening with high fruit bearing level. The Jogorogo Mangosteen fruit was sweet with a little yellow sap. 1-2 seeds were formed in every Jogorogo Mangosteen fruit with 1.6 cm long, 0.8 cm wide and 2.75 thick. -

The life history of A. rigidus on coconut and mangosteen was comparatively studied to understand the effects of host-plant species on its development, to investigate potential host-suitability factors that contributed to its outbreak infestation, and to gather baseline information on the development and characteristics of this pest. The study was conducted at the Institute of Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños. Insect size (body and scale) was not significantly different on both hosts during egg, crawler, white cap, pre-second and second instar stages, as well as during male pre-pupal, pupal and adult stages. The female third instars and adults, however, were bigger on mangosteen than on coconut. At the end of second instar, sexual differentiation was very visible wherein parthenogenic females further undergone two developmental stages: third instar and adults that feed permanently on the leaves. Males undergone three stages: pre- pupa, pupa and winged adults. -

ISSN 0100-2945 DOI: http://dx.doi.org /10.1590/0100-29452018131 Botanic and Physiology Plant biometrics of malay, rose and water apple Guilherme Nacata1 & Renata Aparecida de Andrade2 Abstract - Due to the lack of studies comparing Syzygium malaccensis(L) Meer & Perry, Syzygium aqueum Burm.f. and Syzygium jambos (L) Alston Syzygium in relation to the botanical genus Sygygium regarding the physical characteristics, the present research was conducted, aiming at biometrically characterizing each of the three species, as well as comparing them. The fruits were collected from the São Paulo State University (Unesp), School of Agricultural and Veterinarian Sciences, Jaboticabal. Syzygium plants were used for the evaluation of: fruit and seed masses (g); width and length of leaves (cm) and of seeds (cm); percentage of fruit pulp; length of leaf petiole (cm); and leaf area (cm2). Fifty fruits, leaves and seeds of each species were used, with 5 replicates of 10 samples each and the data were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis and organized into frequency tables. For comparative purposes among the species, a blocks randomized design was adopted, being analyzed by the Tukey Test at 5% of probability. The malay and water apple present fruits with high yield of pulp. The fruit of the malay apple are light, with narrow diameter, medium length, broad seeds, narrow and small leaves, with small leaf area. The rose apple fruit present medium mass, width and length, with broad seeds, narrow leaves, medium length and small leaf area. The water apple fruit are light, broad, long, without seeds, with broad leaves, long and having medium leaf area. -

Under the tropical climate of Sarawak, Edaw longan trees can be induced to flower while flowering intensity of free-flowering Diamond longan can be improved by application of chemical agents such as potassium chlorate, sodium chlorate and 'Vita-min'. The use of sodium chlorate is recommended as it is easily available and the cheapest one to use. It can be applied as a soil drench at a rate of 15g per m2 canopy. The best time of application is when trees have shoots of mature leaves with sign of new flushes. With this technology, cultivation of longan especially the high quality Edaw cultivar in the State can be promoted and encouraged to cater for domestic demand. 1.Introduction. The longan ( Dimocarpus longan Lour.) is a sub-tropical fruit in the family Sapindaceae and is native to Southeast Asia. It is now primarily cultivated in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam as well as Queensland (Australia) and Florida and Hawaii (U.S.A). This fruit is considered one of the important economic fruit crops in South East Asia (Crane, 2000). Longan planting materials from Florida such as Kohala and Thailand such as Baidum, Biew kiew, Chompoo, Fortune eye. Diamond, Ping pong, Edaw and Ezami were acquired by ARC, Semongok in the mid-eighties and since the nineties respectively for planting and evaluation purposes. Local nurserymen started to import and promote planting of free flowering cultivars such as Diamond and Ping pong in the late nineties. -

Talinis – Twin Lakes Federation of People’s Organizations, Diputado Extension, Sibulan, Negros Oriental, Philippines Photo by: Juan Pablo Moreiras 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Large flying foxes in insular Southeast Asia are the most threatened of the Old World fruit bats due to deforestation, unregulated hunting, and little conservation commitment from local governments. Despite the fact they are globally endangered and play essential ecological roles in forest regeneration as seed dispersers and pollinators, there have been only a few studies on these bats that provide information useful to their conservation management. Our project aims to promote the conservation of large flying foxes in the Philippines by providing protected area managers with the training and the baseline information necessary to design and implement a long-term management plan for flying foxes. We focused our efforts on the globally endangered Philippine endemics, Acerodon jubatus and Acerodon leucotis, and the bats that commonly roost with them, Pteropus hypomelanus, P. vampyrus lanensis, and P. pumilus which are thought to be declining in the Philippines. Local participation is an integral part of our project. We conducted the first national training workshop on flying fox population counts and conservation at the Subic Bay area. -
