Receives the Wallace Memorial Fellowship and enrolls at Princeton University. 1946 Graduates from Princeton with a M.S. degree and begins working at the Ford Motor Company as an engineer. Ford Motor Company 1956 Serves as manager of Ford’s Philadelphia sales district and introduces a lower down payment and easier payment schedule for customers. The districts sales go from worst-to-best in three months. Promoted to District Sales Manager. 1964 Ford introduces the Mustang – a design project spearheaded by Iacocca. July 24, 2010 Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is truly a privilege for me to introduce tonight's final recipient of the Walter P. Chrysler Legacy Award. Today happens to be the anniversary of the founding of Detroit in 1701. It is entirely appropriate that we honor Lee Iacocca tonight, as there is such a deep bond that ties together Detroit, Chrysler and this man who is one of the great leaders in the history of our company and our city. I feel a special kinship with Lee Iacocca, and it is not just because we share an Italian heritage. A few months after I became CEO of Chrysler in June 2009, Lee was kind enough to welcome me into his home and to express his support for our efforts to revive the company. This gave me a chance to know a little bit of the man - not just the iconic businessman and the author of best-selling books. Lee Iacocca's Chrysler took help once in the form of government-paid loan guarantees, and paid the loans back years early. I told him that the day we pay the government back, I'll take him to Washington so he can hand over a check for the second time. While the world has changed a great deal in the last three decades, certain principles are timeless.

Our research focuses on United Auto Workers Local 72, a union representing workers at a factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during several plant closings. Using qualitative data collected over a span of more than 20 years, we examine the role of the local union in helping the workers respond to the plant closing in ways that would produce the most beneficial results for them. We trace stories of the workers’ and union’s resistance, cooperation, and pride in their work. The workers’ continued commitment to quality and their strong work ethic seemed to be key factors in persuading the company to keep some work on the site and, later, to add more.

The reasons for the failure of both DaimlerChrysler AG and the Welt AG are rooted in the inherent contradictions of the two strategies. The lack of attention paid to post takeover integration processes combined with the shift of focus to Schrempp’s Asian strategy made the hegemony of the Welt AG plan and the lie of the ‘merger of equals’ metaphor clear to German, American and Japanese stakeholders. As a result, the takeover failed to realize any of the goals of increasing shareholder value, implementing operative synergy effects, and enhancing customer satisfaction. In addition, the failure of DaimlerChrysler AG can be traced to the failure of Mercedes-Benz Car Group, Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motor Corporation to perform satisfactorily in their respective markets. It is particularly salient to show how the significant drop in the quality of Mercedes products was a direct result of the decison to globalize and mass produce the brand.
