Contact: Shawn Morgan Remarks by Sergio Marchionne Introducing Lee Iacocca at Walter P. Chrysler Legacy Gala Sergio Marchionne Chief Executive Officer, Chrysler Group LLC "Introduction of Lee Iacocca" Walter P. Chrysler Museum Legacy Gala Auburn Hills, Mich. July 24, 2010 Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is truly a privilege for me to introduce tonight's final recipient of the Walter P. Chrysler Legacy Award. Today happens to be the anniversary of the founding of Detroit in 1701. It is entirely appropriate that we honor Lee Iacocca tonight, as there is such a deep bond that ties together Detroit, Chrysler and this man who is one of the great leaders in the history of our company and our city. I feel a special kinship with Lee Iacocca, and it is not just because we share an Italian heritage. A few months after I became CEO of Chrysler in June 2009, Lee was kind enough to welcome me into his home and to express his support for our efforts to revive the company. This gave me a chance to know a little bit of the man - not just the iconic businessman and the author of best-selling books. Lee Iacocca's Chrysler took help once in the form of government-paid loan guarantees, and paid the loans back years early. I told him that the day we pay the government back, I'll take him to Washington so he can hand over a check for the second time. While the world has changed a great deal in the last three decades, certain principles are timeless.

The Importance of Unions in Contemporary Times* ANNE STATHAM University of Southern Indiana PAUL GREIDER Florida Southwestern State College ABSTRACT This article examines the importance of unions in contemporary times. Our research focuses on United Auto Workers Local 72, a union representing workers at a factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during several plant closings. Using qualitative data collected over a span of more than 20 years, we examine the role of the local union in helping the workers respond to the plant closing in ways that would produce the most beneficial results for them. We trace stories of the workers’ and union’s resistance, cooperation, and pride in their work. The workers’ continued commitment to quality and their strong work ethic seemed to be key factors in persuading the company to keep some work on the site and, later, to add more.

Fakultät Wirtschaftswissenschaften Lehrstuhl für Personalwirtschaft Dissertation THE DAIMLERCHRYSLER AG TAKEOVER FAILURE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE FAILED DAIMLER-BENZ WELT AG STRATEGY vorgelegt bei: Herrn Prof. Dr. Martin Schneider betreut durch: Herrn Prof. Dr. Martin Schneider und Herrn Prof. Dr. René Fahr Abgabetermin: October 16th, 2012 vorgelegt von: John Riach Studiengang: Wirtschaftswissenschaften EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Although the DaimlerChrysler AG takeover was the largest industrial takeover in history (1998), this case study shows that the acquisition of Chrysler was a sub-strategy within Daimler-Benz CEO Jürgen Schrempp’s plan to place Daimler-Benz and the Mercedes brand as the focal point of a global Welt AG for the passenger and commercial vehicle industry of the 21st century. The reasons for the failure of both DaimlerChrysler AG and the Welt AG are rooted in the inherent contradictions of the two strategies. The lack of attention paid to post takeover integration processes combined with the shift of focus to Schrempp’s Asian strategy made the hegemony of the Welt AG plan and the lie of the ‘merger of equals’ metaphor clear to German, American and Japanese stakeholders. As a result, the takeover failed to realize any of the goals of increasing shareholder value, implementing operative synergy effects, and enhancing customer satisfaction. In addition, the failure of DaimlerChrysler AG can be traced to the failure of Mercedes-Benz Car Group, Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motor Corporation to perform satisfactorily in their respective markets. It is particularly salient to show how the significant drop in the quality of Mercedes products was a direct result of the decison to globalize and mass produce the brand.

  • 1. Change, Leadership, and Creativity
Part I Foundational Principles for Leaders 1 Change, Leadership, and Creativity The Powerful Connection “Leadership is about managing change—whether you’re leading a company or leading a country. Things change, and you get creative.” —Lee Iacocca CHAPTER AT A GLANCE What is the relationship between change, leadership, and creativity? How do these three concepts mutually support one another? Can you imagine how leadership effectiveness is dramatically enhanced when someone is able to use imagination when responding to today’s volatile climate and ever-changing conditions? The purpose of this chapter is to examine more closely the three basic pillars of this book—namely change, leadership, and creativity. To that end, we provide some basic descriptions of these concepts and highlight the degree to which change, leadership, and creativity intertwine like the strands of a rope. The chapter begins with a description of change, a concept we believe forms a bond between creativity and leadership. We then examine some contemporary descriptions of leadership that highlight a connection to creativity. Next, we provide 3 4 PART I FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES FOR LEADERS a review of some definitions, views, and characteristics of creativity. Building on a brief review of the leadership and creativity fields, we conclude the chapter with a description of the concept we call creative leadership. CREATIVE CHANGE: IT’S NOT CHANGING THE BABY Quoting from Heraclitus again, “You can never step in the same river twice.” In that respect, whether you are making something that wasn’t there before or responding to what is already new or different, change is a constant process.

While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame.

It was his talent in marketing that helped realize his full potential. Iacocca's first sales campaign in the mid-1950s was so successful that it attracted the attention of company executives and brought him to the Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Iacocca had reaped in massive sales over his career, particularly with the Ford Mustang that he designed in 1957. Iacocca died at his home in Bel-Air, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, from complications of Parkinson's disease, his family told local media. Chrysler said in a statement that the company "is saddened" by news of Iacocca's death. "He played a historic role in steering Chrysler through crisis and making it a competitive force," the statement read. "Lee gave us a mindset that still drives us today—one that is characterized by hard work, dedication and grit.
