A. Richards points out that in a poem impulses are organized by a poet in two ways -- by exclusion and by inclusion. In the structure of poems where impulses are organized by inclusion one comes across a unique ‘equilibrium of opposed impulses’ (197), a gift of the poetic imagination. Paradox is one of the verbal manifestations of this singular balance of heterogeneous impulses. As ordinary language is generally marked by what Shklovsky calls habitualization (12), the contradiction inherent in a paradox belies our expectations and comes to us at first as a shock. But as we probe deeper and look at the expression from a new angle, the familiar semantic horizon of the words used gets extended resolving in the process all apparent contradictions. This is what Cleanth Brooks theorizes as the ‘disruptive’ function of the language of literature: The tendency of science is necessarily to stabilize terms, to freeze them into fixed denotations; the poet’s tendency is by contrast disruptive. The terms are continually modifying each other, and thus violating their dictionary meanings. (9) When Eliot writes ‘April is the cruellest month’(51) we feel bewildered because the line rudely shakes all positive bliss and grace associated with the first month of the spring. Gradually as we take into account the story of the Fisher King of the fertility myth, we discover the truth embedded in the paradox. -

At the same time, forestry and agricultural lands still remain, mainly in the eastern and south-eastern parts of the province. And also, there are some local urban centres which are less dependent on Colombo. These areas have less relation with the centre of Colombo. The Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined in order to analyse and assess future transport demands and formulate a master plan. For this purpose, Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined by: A) areas that are already urbanised and those to be urbanised by 2035, and B) areas that are dependent on Colombo. In an urbanised area, urban activities, which are mainly commercial and business activities, are active and it is assumed that demand for transport is high. People living in areas dependent on Colombo area assumed to travel to Colombo by some transport measures. 4.1.2 Factors to Consider for Future Urban Structures In order to identify the CMA, the following factors are considered. These factors will also define the urban structure, which is described in Section 4.3. An effective transport network will be proposed based on the urban structure as well as the traffic demand. At the same time, the new transport network proposed will affect the urban structure and lead to urban development. -

ABSTRACT Gitanjali written by Rabindranath Tagore (and the English translation of the Corresponding Author: Bengali poems in it, written in 1921) was awarded the Novel Prize in 1913. He Dr. Tinni Dutta called it Song Offerings. Some of the songs were taken from „Naivedya‟, „Kheya‟, „Gitimalya‟ and other selections of his poem. That is, the Supreme Being is complete only together with the soul of the devetee. He makes the mere mortal infinite and chooses to do so for His own sake, this could be just could be a faint echo of the AdvaitaPhilosophy.Tagore‟s songs in Gitanjali express the distinctive method of philosophy…The poet is nothing more than a flute (merely a reed) which plays His timeless melodies . His heart overflows with happiness at His touch that is intangible Tagore‟s song in Gitanjali are analyzed in this ways - content analysis and dynamic analysis. Methodology of his present study were corroborated with earlier findings: Halder (1918), Basu (1988), Sanyal (1992) Dutta (2002).In conclusion it could be stated that Tagore‟s songs in Gitanjali are intermingled with beauty and eternity.A frequently used theme in Tagore‟s poetry, is repeated in the song,„Tumiaamaydekechhilechhutir‟„When the day of fulfillment came I knew nothing for I was absent –minded‟, He mourns the loss. This strain of thinking is found also in an exquisite poem written in old age. -

Of Education, University of Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal. Pincode: 741235 ABSTRACT: Tourism as a modern term is applicable to both international and domestic tourists. Tourism aims to recognize importance of it in generating local employment both directly in the tourism sector and in various support and resource management sectors. West Bengal has improved its share in international tourism receipts during the course of past decade i.e. from about 3.36% in 2005 to about 5.88% in 2016 of foreign tourists visiting India. Archaeological heritage is a vital part of the tourism product and is one of the energetic factors that can develop the competitiveness of a tourism destination. Archaeological heritage tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing global tourism markets and it covers all aspects of travel that provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about other areas’ history, culture and life style. The present investigated the relationship between tourists’ satisfaction and the attributes of archaeological heritage destinations in West Bengal (WB). The area of the study at selected archaeological heritage destinations of West Bengal, which is located in eastern India and the data of this study have been collected from the on-site survey method at Victoria Memorial Hall, Belur Math, Chandannagar, Hazarduari, Shantiniketan, Bishnupur. These destinations are highly of the rich archaeological heritage of the State of West Bengal. The sample population for this study was composed of tourists who visited in these places in between December 2016 to January 2017. -

Finnish translations of his works (19 volumes in 1913–2013, some in several editions) listed and commented upon. Tagore’s plays in theatre, radio and TV, music composed on Tagore’s poems. Tagore’s poem (Apaghat 1929) commenting upon the Finnish Winter War. KEYWORDS: Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali Literature, Indian English Literature, Fin nish Literature. In Finland as well as elsewhere in the West, the knowledge of Indian literature was restricted to a few Sanskrit classics until the second decade of the 20th century. The Nobel Prize in Literature given to Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) in 1913 changed this at once. To some extent, the importance of Tagore had been noted even before—the Swedish Nobel Committee did not get his name out of nowhere.1 Tagore belonged to a renowned Bengali family and some echoes of this family had even been heard in Finland. In 1882, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1898) published the historical novel Anandamath containing his most famous verse and created a wave. The resounding echo of ‘Vande Mataram’ (Glory to Motherland) could be heard from young nationalist heroes headed for the gallows, leaders who addressed political rallies and barefoot children running the streets. More than a hundred years later, in 2002, this ‘second national anthem’ is being sung in school prayer halls and by fervent Hindu revivalists. However, if we accord to Bankimchandra the brand of nationalism that Vande Mataram has come to signify today, we’d be telling only half the story. The 19th century author who lived in the heydays of the intellectual revolution in Bengal ranks high amongst the historical figures who have contributed to the notions of liberalism and freedom. -

Tagore was and will remain one of the greatest poets and philosophers the world has ever seen. His contribution to Indian literature, music, arts and drama endeared him not only to Bengalis but to Indians and the world at large. -
The Melodies of Sunil Santai
THE MELODIES OF SUNIL SANTAI The object of this paper is to attempt an aesthetic appreciation of the melodies of Sunil Santa (1915-1981), the great composer who was one of the pioneers of modern music in Sri Lanka. 2 After a brief outline of the historical background, I propose to touch on the relation of the melodies to the language and poetry of their lyrics, the impact of various musical traditions, including folk-song, and their salient features. I. Sources and Historical Background Among the sources for a study of Sunil Santa's music, first in importance are the songs themselves. Most of these were published by the composer in book form with music notation, and all these have been reprinted by Mrs. Sunil Santa, who has also brought out posthumously four collections of works which remained largely unprinted during the composer's lifetime. The music is generally in Sinhala letter format, but there are two collections in staff notation,' to which must be added the first two books of Christian lyrics by Fr. Moses Perera which include a number of Sunil Santa's melodies. 4 Many of these songs were recorded for broadcast either by the composer himself or by other singers who were his pupils or associates. Unfortunately, these recordings have not been preserved properly and are rarely heard nowadays. However, the S.L.B.C. has issued one LP, one EP\ and two cassettes of his songs," and a third cassette, Guvan I. This paper was read before the Royal Asiatic Society (Sri Lanka Branch) on 31st January 1994, and is now published with a few emendations. -
Echoing Tagore's Love for the Monsoons
ECHOING TAGORE’S LOVE FOR THE MONSOONS Sukanya Guha Alumni of Banaras Hindu University, India Contact: [email protected] Abstract In India, Bengal’s most celebrated literary figure, Rabindranath Tagore, was specifically sensitive regarding the various seasons occurring in India. The monsoon and its relation with Tagore’s songs is the main focus of this paper. The monsoon, when Mother Nature spreads her beauty by unravelling her bounty treasures, is richly expressed by Tagore. In the composition for the khanika (poem) ‘Asho nai tumi phalgune’ [you did not come in the spring season] Tagore says: “when I awaited eagerly for your visit in the spring, you didn’t come. Please, don’t make me wait any longer and do come during the full monsoon”. In another of his songs he visualises on a cloudy sunless day, a person’s longing to share his or her deepest treasure of feeling for that particular important person ‘Emon ghonoghor boroshaye’ [in this heavy downpour] (Tagore 2002: 333, song 248). Through these poetic compositions and many more, one may understand the depth in Tagore’s understanding of the human’s emotional details regarding this specific season. The monsoon may also be disastrous. According to Tagore’s a composition ‘Bame rakho bhoyonkori’ [keep aside the destructions] (Tagore 2002: 394, song 58) he describes as well as wishes that the monsoon keeps away the damage or distress from people’s lives. His tunes blend with his words and emotions, not to mention the ragas that are believed to be related with rain that is popular to the Indian subcontinent such as Rag Megh or Rag Mian ki Malhar.
