A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

Fenland Lowland Grassland Significance: CONSIDERABLE Dewiption: A very distinctive flat, low-lying basin made up of post-glacial peat, clay and silt dcpnsits crossed by the rivers Welland, Nene, Ouse, Withain and Glen and their tributaries which drain into the Wash. The landscapc has bccn considerably influenced by man, particularly over the last 300 years, with the succersful drainage of the area which has resultcd in thc current dominance of intensive arable cropping. Thc two key remaining areas of grassland are the Ouse and Ncnc Washes which were created during thc draining of the fen. These now support largc tracts of wet neutral grassland and swamp communities. Planning is part of the Community Protection, Transport & Environment Directorate. The Surrey Hills AONB Office has commissioned the report, and the Habitat Regulations Assessment of which it forms the final output, as part of the review of the Surrey Hills AONB Management Plan for the period from 2020 to 2025. The report evaluates the extent to which the revised AONB Management Plan has the potential to give rise to ‘likely significant effects’ on Special Protection Areas (SPAs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) (and Ramsar Sites) within the Surrey Hills AONB and the surrounding area. Grazing by livestock is an appropriate management for lowland heathland, to deliver conservation objectives. b. Management regimes using appropriate grazing can produce a greater diversity of habitats and thus a greater biological diversity than other management types such as burning or cutting. c. Grazing impacts must always be considered in terms of the intensity of grazing and the livestock types used; negative effects, or poor achievement of targets can arise from inappropriate grazing. The negative impacts of grazing on biodiversity over much of upland heathland in Britain illustrates the consequences of overgrazing. Summary 1. In recent years, grazing has been reintroduced to many UK (and European) lowland heaths, in an attempt to provide appropriate, sustainable conservation management. 2. To provide information to guide the use of livestock grazing on lowland heathlands, this report has the following objectives. a. To review and synthesise information on lowland heathland grazing history, methods and impacts. b. To obtain this information from published and unpublished literature, observation and anecdote from site managers, and ongoing research. -

Summary Guide to Surrey Heathland An introduction to the heathland habitat and its management Surrey Heathland Project Heathland areas in Surrey In Surrey, heathland is largely confined to two National Character Areas: the Thames Basin Heaths (on Tertiary sands and gravels overlying the London Clay) in the north west of the county and the Wealden Greensand in the south west and centre. Additionally, there is some heathland (notably Headley Heath) on superficial gravels overlying the chalk in the North Downs National Character Area. Thames Basin Heaths Along with contiguous heathland in Hampshire and Berkshire, heathland in this part of Surrey amounts to approximately two thirds (about 2,000 hectares) of the county's surviving heathland. This forms a discontinuous band of sites from Epsom, Esher and Oxshott Commons in the east and westwards to the Ash Ranges Hampshire border. Heathland has also developed here on the Bagshot Beds and the Windlesham and Camberley Sand formations. The topography of these heaths is generally gentle and there are large areas of low- lying land supporting humid and wet heathland although, in places, steep hills support dry heath. Three sites, Ash Ranges, Pirbright Ranges and Chobham Common, account for three quarters of the heathland in the Thames Basin; nevertheless other smaller sites have considerable importance in maintaining biodiversity across the range of heathland within the National Character Area. Wealden Greensand Heathland on the Wealden Greensand makes up one third (about 1,000 hectares) of the county's heathland and forms part of a larger area extending into Hampshire and West Sussex. With the notable exception of Thursley National Nature Reserve and its environs (which supports an internationally important mire), the Wealden Greensand heaths are Thursley Common predominantly dry sites, lying on the Folkestone, Sandgate and Hythe Beds of the Lower Greensand. -

The Structure of Chalk Grassland Communities and the Role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Roy Anthony Holm 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of the Environment and Technology University of Brighton Abstract Semi-natural chalk grassland is an internationally important habitat characterised by high species richness at a fine scale. In both the United Kingdom and other European Countries however, significant areas of chalk grassland have been lost to intensive agriculture practices. In the United Kingdom, conservation and expansion of existing chalk grassland sites has become a high priority. Research that leads to a better understanding of the processes that structure chalk grassland communities may aid these objectives. A number of field trials have been conducted to examine the role of grazing in structuring grassland plant communities, but the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)/plant symbiosis has received less attention. In this research project the structure (presence and abundance of species) of chalk grassland communities growing on the South Downs in the United Kingdom is defined. This is achieved by detailed analysis of extensive plant survey data collected in 1991. Analysis revealed strong patterns relating to species presence and abundance in the chalk grassland communities. In particular evidence of „nestedness‟ and a frequency abundance relationship was found. From these patterns it was deduced that AMF/ plant symbiosis may have a significant role in structuring chalk grassland communities. In the experimental component of this research project two separate, but connected, trials were conducted. In the first trial chalk grassland turf was sampled for study in the laboratory under controlled environmental conditions.
