The draw for April & May will be made at the coffee morning on Wed 1st May WHATS BEEN HAPPENING South Otterington C of E Primary School we finished our whole school topic on Journeys with the journey of Jesus on Palm Sunday. Oscar led Sally the donkey up to church to our end of term Easter Service, whilst the rest of the school waved their palm leaves. A big thank you to Wendy, Sally and Father Robert. Our Summer topic, Myths and Legends begins as we return to school, with a Dragon Dance workshop. We all hope you had a Happy Easter Friends of South Otterington School After consultation with parents last year, an outdoor classroom and forest school activities were highlighted as the priority areas for fundraising for 2018/19. In total we want to raise £16,000 to redesign the nature garden to include seating, shelter and space to undertake forest school activities. We will also be incorporating a sensory and nature trail and an outdoor classroom for use by all ages. After a lot of fundraising, we now have £6,500 towards the cost of our outdoor learning zone - this is amazing and a big thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far. In March, we submitted a funding application to Tesco Bags of Help scheme, and we are preparing a Lottery application as we speak - so keep those fingers and toes crossed South Otterington, Newby Wiske & Maunby Parish Council Details of current Parish Council members & details of how to contact them can be found on the Public Notice Boards in each village Daffodils in South Otterington the company that supplied our spring bulbs have asked us to remind residents who have bulbs planted on their land or in verges/borders near them not to cut them back until after their leaves have turned yellow. This is because daffodils use their leaves to create energy, which is then used to create next year’s flowers. If you cut them back before the leaves turn yellow (approx. 6 weeks after they bloom), the bulb will not produce a flower the following year. This is especially important this year as the bulbs are in their infantry & if cut back too soon, they will not ever flower again – thank you for your cooperation… same for the crocuses please leave them another couple of weeks Call my bluff wine tasting evening our first “Call my bluff wine tasting evening” on 5th April was a fantastic success raising over £300 for the South Otterington Village Hall toilet refurbishment fund. Guests had to guess the correct wine following three eloquent and convincing descriptions provided by an alleged “expert” panel of Howard Ellis, Vanessa Gillson & Emma Vincent. Huge thanks to the panel, for their wit, artfulness & sneakiness on the night and also to David Gillson for preparing the wine descriptions! Thanks also go to Glenda Nasby, Celia Newton & David Gillson for their waiter service. Above all thanks to Vanessa for organising the event (which we hope to repeat!) and to everyone who came along and supported us…. especially the serendipitous hecklers at the back, who provided additional entertainment! Kilimanjaro Charity Climb in early September 2018 Gary Hudson set off to Tanzania with high hopes of both reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit and importantly to raise money for the fabulous Oscars charity dedicated to researching and preventing brain tumours in children. Both aims were achieved, and Gary would like to thank everyone in our local community for their support and generosity in helping raise £11,500 for Oscars.

Diane Parsons North Yorkshire Police & Crime Commission c/o County Hall, Racecourse Lane, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, DL7 8AD. Dear Sirs RE: Sale of Newby Wiske Hall to PGL Travel Ltd I write again regarding the above planned sale to PGL, after attending last Thursdays NYPCC public Q & A forum in York, I am even more disgusted, with NYPCC who are after all supposed to uphold and represent the moral fibre of our society. Following the points made by Mr David Stockport, you would have thought that at least there would have been an acceptance of the points made; instead the Chairman was so indignant to the fact, that someone should dare to suggest that a public body should show even a modicum of moral fibre, in the respect of the Paradise Papers, and the massive negative effect these schemes have on Public Finances and Services, instead the response by the Chairman was, its nothing to do with us, so let’s move on. I repeat, this company are so heavily and extensively involved in a scheme to avoid paying tax in the UK, they receive tax handouts for listed buildings, significant Government subsidies for assisted places (This would be perfectly acceptable if they paid their full taxes to the UK Government), only then to operate a tax avoidance scheme, meaning we, the British tax payer, would be helping them pay even less tax, which could be used to support ALL OUR UNDERFUNDED PUBLIC SERVICES including the POLICE.
