After their successful performances in Southeast Asia and America, the Awa Odori Entertainment Troupe returns to Europe this summer Tokyo, Japan (June 12, 2015). Tokyo based Awa Odori Entertainment Troupe TAKARABUNE will visit Paris this summer to take part in the world’s biggest Japan-themed festival JAPAN EXPO 2015 (expected attendance: 250,000 people); and then will proceed to London to perform on the equally huge HYPER JAPAN 2015 festival (expected attendance: 90,000 people). For details about times and dates of this tour, please check the general schedule below. Managed by Appcheez Enterprise, TAKARABUNE is Japan’s first professional Awa Odori troupe. They push the limits of this venerable Japanese art mixing tradition with modern elements, which results in a cool, powerful signature dance style recognized and loved all around the world. In 2014, TAKARABUNE performed in four countries outside their native Japan (USA, France, India, Hong Kong), and their show’s total attendance was more than 400,000 people, making the troupe’s very first World Tour a great success. What’s Awa Odori? This venerable Japanese traditional dance has more than 400 years of History, combining energetic dance routines with the thundering sound of Taiko drums. TAKARABUNE’s goal is to show people around the world the mesmerizing power of Awa Odori dance, so they updated a little bit the traditional formulas to make it more attractive to modern, global audiences. • The Cultural Dynamic of Doujinshi and Cosplay: Local Anime Fandom in Japan, USA and Europe
. Volume 10, Issue 1 May 2013 The cultural dynamic of doujinshi and cosplay: Local anime fandom in Japan, USA and Europe Nicolle Lamerichs Maastricht University, Netherlands Abstract: Japanese popular culture unifies fans from different countries and backgrounds. Its rich participatory culture is beyond any other and flourishes around comics (manga), animation (anime), games and music. Japanese storytelling showcases elaborate story worlds whose characters are branded on many products. The sub genres of Japanese pop-culture and the lingua franca of their audiences shape Western fandom. In this article, I scrutinize the global dynamic of manga. I specifically focus on the creation of fan manga (‘doujinshi’) and dress- up (‘cosplay’) as two migratory fan practices. The form and content of fan works, and the organizational structure behind them, varies intensely per country. If manga is an international language and style, where is its international fan identity located? In this article, I explore this uncharted territory through ethnographic views of diverse Western and Japanese fan sites where these creative practices emerge. This ethnographic overview is thus concerned with the heterogeneous make-up and social protocols of anime fandom. Keywords: Anime fandom, doujinshi, cosplay, conventions, ethnography Introduction Japan’s global and exotic identity is historically rooted. In the nineteenth century, Euro- Americans performed their fascination for the island through ‘Orientalism’ in Western impressionist art, Zen gardens and architecture (Napier, 2007; Said, 1978). When World War II penetrated this culturally rich image, the fascination for Japan became more ambivalent, characterized by both fear and curiosity. By now, the country’s global identity, which lingers between East and West, inspires Western corporate businesses, art and media as it represents a mixture of spiritual traditions, strong labour and family morals, as well as an advanced technocapitalist model (Ivy, 1995; Wolferen, 1995).

French fans have created communities that share references about this pop culture and more generally about Japan. This specific imaginary drives some fans to travel to Japan to discover the actual places which appear in their favourite manga/anime. Focusing on the travel experiences of French tourists, this article introduces the notion of media pilgrimage as a useful way of conceiving such behaviour. Taking an anthropology of tourism approach, the article details the processes that guide the tourist experience on trips induced by media-contents-related imaginaries.

  • Chapter Iv Manga and Anime As the Tools of Japanese
CHAPTER IV MANGA AND ANIME AS THE TOOLS OF JAPANESE PUBLIC DIPLOMACY Japan was considered to have violated human right and caused devastation in other countries during the World War II. Japanese invasion in World War II was so great that Japan had destabilized the World and Japan was a country considered cruel as destroyer to other countries. Because Japan was such an ambitious country and did the brutal things in international world, it made Japan become a country feared by others. However, after the defeat of Japan in World War II Japan got such bad image post World War II. Asian countries especially, that have been colonized by Japan did not respect anymore to Japan and also the international view about Japan has changed because there were so many countries that felt being effected of the Japanese atrocities. Thus, it made Japan had a bad image post World War II. The way Japan rebuilt their image is by using two of their soft diplomacy. They are anime and manga. The factors which led Japan to improve and to rebuild the national image post World War II that had been described above. Then, this section discusses the effort of Japan to rebuild the image and how Japan did national branding. The analysis of the efforts of Japan will eventually provide the result of analysis about international respond towards Japan post Japan national branding image. 50 A. The Cultural Values of Japan in Manga and Anime Cultural diplomacy is a part of public diplomacy. Diplomacy itself is an effort to struggle the national interest in international society and to have foreign relations.
