I'm Ines Casillas from UC Santa Barbara and someone who's been researching and writing about Spanish language radio, in the U.S. specifically, for the past five years. So I'm very excited about the possibility of this caucus. So what we're going to do, we're going to start with two of us who do more U.S.-based, kind of, Spanish language radio, work our way to two others who do more border-related, and then end up in Latin America, okay? So my research highlights how U.S. Spanish language radio across the 20th century has really capitalized, very lucratively, on the conversation around immigration. -

Minnesota's-First Radio Station Was 9SV, Owned and Operated by 19-Year
"Minnesota's-first radio station was 9SV, owned and operated by 19-year-old Robert Witschen, who broadcast phonographic music in 1920 to the few who could pick it up on their cat's whiskers sets. Schilpin hired Witschen in 1922 to build a station and give the Times a voice, WFAM. But the lack of advertisers---due to a lack of listeners with sets---forced the station to close down five years later. When Schilpin decided to try again in 1938, Witschen became the Chief Engineer for KFAM (the original call letters had been taken over by another station, and Schilpin's second choice, KSTC was, according to the FCC, too similar to St. Paul's KSTP).” KFAM-AM came on the air in 1938 and KFAM- FM was added a decade later…among the pioneer FM stations in Minnesota. ST CLOUD THE TRIPLET CITY JOHN DOMINIK 1983 Radio in Minnesota Radio in Minnesota, as in other parts of the country, began with experimental broadcasts in the 1910s. These often originated in the physics or engineering departments of colleges and universities. The University of Minnesota made its first radio transmissions in 1912, and in 1915 broadcast an entire football game with a spark gap transmitter. The University received a license for experimental station 9XI in 1920. Similar stations at St. John’s University and St. Olaf College also began during this period. Station 9XI at the University of Minnesota eventually was replaced by WLB, which became the state’s first licensed AM station on Jan. 13, 1922 (twenty three years later WLB would change its call letters to KUOM). -

Lucy Watson 25th September 2019 i Abstract In the 21st century, celebrity culture is increasingly pervasive. Existing research on how people (particularly women) read celebrity indicates that celebrity media is consumed for pleasure, as a way to engage in ‘safe’ gossip amongst imagined, as well as real, communities about standards of morality, and as a way to understand and debate social and cultural behavioural standards. The celebrities we read about engage us in a process of cultural identity formation, as we identify and disidentify with those whom we consume. Celebrities are, as the adage goes, ‘just like us’ – only richer, more talented, or perhaps better looking. But what about when celebrities are not ‘just like us’? Despite relatively recent changes in the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) life in the media, the world of celebrity is an overwhelmingly heterosexual one. -

She was looking back toward the Mercedes where an imposing dark- haired man, wearing a long wool coat, stood with his arms folded high on his chest.
