Exploring animal welfare education materials Abstract This document reports a survey of current animal welfare education materials relevant to the red meat industries and available to primary, secondary and tertiary (including TAFE and Vocational Education and Training - VET) students. The survey was informal, yet systematic, using email, telephone, database and internet searches. A number of relevant groups were identified, representing different interests: those that were potential users of animal welfare education resources and/or providers of education and training, and those that were potential producers of animal welfare resources. Both Australian and international sources were searched. The survey found only limited educational resources in animal welfare focussed on the livestock industries. Although they included video, CD ROM, teaching manuals, print and internet publications there was a lack of relevant Australian material that could be presented in the Australian context.

Leading recvery Annual Report 2019–2020 TARONGA ANNUAL REPORT 2019–2020 A SHARED FUTURE WILDLIFE AND PEPLE At Taronga we believe that together we can find a better and more sustainable way for wildlife and people to share this planet. Taronga recognises that the planet’s biodiversity and ecosystems are the life support systems for our own species' health and prosperity. At no time in history has this been more evident, with drought, bushfires, climate change, global pandemics, habitat destruction, ocean acidification and many other crises threatening natural systems and our own future. Whilst we cannot tackle these challenges alone, Taronga is acting now and working to save species, sustain robust ecosystems, provide experiences and create learning opportunities so that we act together. We believe that all of us have a responsibility to protect the world’s precious wildlife, not just for us in our lifetimes, but for generations into the future. Our Zoos create experiences that delight and inspire lasting connections between people and wildlife. We aim to create conservation advocates that value wildlife, speak up for nature and take action to help create a future where both people and wildlife thrive. Our conservation breeding programs for threatened and priority wildlife help a myriad of species, with our program for 11 Legacy Species representing an increased commitment to six Australian and five Sumatran species at risk of extinction. The Koala was added as an 11th Legacy Species in 2019, to reflect increasing threats to its survival. In the last 12 months alone, Taronga partnered with 28 organisations working on the front line of conservation across 17 countries.

  • 'Just Like Us'?
‘Just like us’? Investigating how LGBTQ Australians read celebrity media Lucy Watson A thesis submitted to fulfil requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of Sydney 2019 Statement of originality This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. A version of Chapter Nine appears in the book Gender and Australian Celebrity Culture (forthcoming), edited by Anthea Taylor and Joanna McIntyre. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. Lucy Watson 25th September 2019 i Abstract In the 21st century, celebrity culture is increasingly pervasive. Existing research on how people (particularly women) read celebrity indicates that celebrity media is consumed for pleasure, as a way to engage in ‘safe’ gossip amongst imagined, as well as real, communities about standards of morality, and as a way to understand and debate social and cultural behavioural standards. The celebrities we read about engage us in a process of cultural identity formation, as we identify and disidentify with those whom we consume. Celebrities are, as the adage goes, ‘just like us’ – only richer, more talented, or perhaps better looking. But what about when celebrities are not ‘just like us’? Despite relatively recent changes in the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) life in the media, the world of celebrity is an overwhelmingly heterosexual one.

  • Field & Game Australia and Australian Deer
RSPCA SUBMISSION 54 BACKGROUND Since forming in 1958, Field & Game Australia (FGA) has been active in wetland conservation; ethical, humane hunting; and clay target shooting sports, and are active in every state and territory of Australia. Historically, hunters in Victoria have led a number of conservation initiatives, developing great knowledge of the flora and fauna that is found in our natural habitat. Hunters funded the purchase and protection of wetland habitats through hunting licence fees in a unique private/public partnership with the government at the time. This created the State Game Reserve system which provides critical breeding sanctuary for native waterbirds, offsetting the loss of habitat from draining, for agricultural and other purposes, and habitat for all wildlife. This network of sanctuaries in Victoria totals 75,000 hectares, with a further 25,000 hectares in South Australia. The Australian Deer Association (ADA) was formed in 1969 to promote the sound management of Australia’s free-ranging wild deer herds. Today ADA has active branches in each State and Territory of Australia. ADA members participate in the active management of wild deer on public and private land throughout Australia, participating in hunting and culling operations, as well as habitat restoration and protection, and wild deer monitoring initiatives. FGA and ADA combined represent the second-largest group of hunters and recreational shooters in Australia. Animal welfare is an important consideration for hunters. Licensed game hunters are aware of, and bound by, the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals in Hunting and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The Victorian Hunting Guide, which has been issued annually to all licensed hunters, clearly outlines hunters’ obligations.
