Daughter of Canadian Banl Official Kidnaped in the Bahamas FREEPORT, Grand Bahama Island (UPI)--The Bahamian government flew ln police reinforcements yesterday and sealed off thlS resort island in a search for the 4-year-old daughter of a Canadian bank manager and the two armed men who kldnaped her. Deputy Police CommiSSloner Gerald Bartlett said Andrea Spencer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spencer, was abducted from her home in her pajamas by the men about lam Friday. All air and sea departures from the island were forbldden by the government whlle police searched the lsland. Bartlett would not conflrm a report that the kidnapers had sought $250.000 ransom in a phone call to the Spencer famlly at midday Frlday, but he told UPI lt would "not be unreasonable" to speculate on that amount. The glrl's father lS manager of the Royal Bank of Canada branch ln Freeport, the main town on the northernmost lsland ln the Bahama chaln. Grand Bahama, less than 100 miles east of Palm Beach, lS largely scrub brush and wllds, except for Freeport and West End, the two towns where most of the island's population of about 10,000 is concentrated. Nilon Administration Accused of Trying to Undermine Freedom of Speech, Pre~s CHICAGO (UPI)--Neal Sheehan, the New York Times reporter who flrst made public the Pentagon Papers. Frlday nlght sald the press should have a "deeply adversary relatlonshlp wlth the government and other major lnstltutlons." This aggresslveness is needed, Sheehan told a '~ass Medla '73" lecture serles, because of the unprecedented central control that the federal government exercises. Sheehan sald that to remedy the liis of American journalism, both prlnted and broadcast, reporters must questlon the fundamentals of government p011Cy. "If the press lS to inform, lt must begln searchlng out the storles and lnformation that the government doesn't want us to have," he said. "Too often ln the past," Sheehan said, "journalists have taken the offlclal version to be Objectlve truth and have 19nored or not glven credence to dissenting vlews." Such was the case in Vletnam, he said--even in the final days of the Paris negotlatlons. Sheehan accused the Nlxon admlnistratlon of mountlng "the most sustalned campalgn ln the last 5C years to undermlne freedom of speech and freedom of the press." The ''Mass Medla '73" lecture series lS sponsored by the Unlverslty of Chlcago. 'Two-Fisted Good Guy' Tim Holt to be Buried Monday in Ol'ahoma HARRAH, Oklahoma (UPI)--Tim Holt, white-hatted cowboy who rode through more than 100 western fllms, wlll be burled Monday ln thlS small Oklahoma community he chose over . Holt, 54, the Hollywood born son of silent fllm star Jack Holt, dled Thursday of bone cancer. Holt never liked the glitter of Hollywood. He found the current trend toward adult mOVles repugnant, and longed for the return of the knight of the purple sage. "Hhen you get the sex and vlolence and thlngs llke that, lt'S so far outdone that it just becomes absurd," he sald ln a recent lnterview. "I thlnk just llke any other pendulum, it's gOlng to sWlng the other way." H1S favorlte role was that of an itinerant Amerlcan huntlng gold ln "Treasure of Slerra Madre," set ln MeX1CO \Vlth Humphrey Bogart and Walter Huston. Others were "Stagecoach" wlth John Wayne and "My Darllng Clementine" wlth Henry Fonda. To the youngsters of the 1930's and 40's, however, he was best remembered as the two-flsted good guy ln scores of Saturday western thrlilers. American TV Personalities Clash With Australians During Awards Ceremonies MELBOURNE (UPI)--Amerlcan actor Glenn Ford clashed wlth Australla's mlnlster for the medla, Sen. Doug McClelland, at the annual Australlan televlSlon Logle Awards Frlday nlght. When McClelland went to take his seat at the table at WhlCh Ford was Slttlng, he offered to shake Ford's hand. Ford refused, saylng, "I don't like whii't your government lS saYlng about my government and the way your government lS trylng to put U.S. actors out of work." McClelland retorted, "We don't llke some of the things your country's film lndustry has been dOlng to thlS country." Other people at the same table said the two dld not speak to each other during the 90-mlnute presentatlon of the 1972 awards. Ford also refused to Slt next to Gall Flsher, who plays Mlke Connor's secretary ln the ''Mannix'' TV serles, at the guest of honor table. Miss Flsher later sald, "I was S(J upset. I couldn't belleve lt was happenlng." Another U.S. TV star of the popular ''Mod Squad" serles, Mlchael Cole, had his problems too. Cole used a four-letter word before the audlence after Belngagie presentatlons were beamed llve throughout Australla. He later apologlsed. From a table close to tne stage Cole took more than 30 seconds to reach the mlcrophone. On stage, he stood motionless for a moment and then began to speak unlntelllglbly. He was escorted off stage by Ford, who then thanked the sponsors on behalf of Cole. Later Cole sald he was "l.ndlSpOsed" and meant no offence to the Australian publlc, "whom I love."
