Moon’s Phases and Tides Moon Phases Half of the Moon is always lit up by the sun. As the Moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the lighted area. From Earth, the lit portion we see of the moon waxes (grows) and wanes (shrinks). The revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon look as if it is changing shape in the sky The Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days. Exploration of the Moon The physical exploration of the Moon began when Luna 2, a space probe launched by the Soviet Union, made an impact on the surface of the Moon on September 14, 1959. Prior to that the only available means of exploration had been observation from Earth. The invention of the optical telescope brought about the first leap in the quality of lunar observations. Galileo Galilei is generally credited as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes; having made his own telescope in 1609, the mountains and craters on the lunar surface were among his first observations using it. NASA's Apollo program was the first, and to date only, mission to successfully land humans on the Moon, which it did six times. The first landing took place in 1969, when astronauts placed scientific instruments and returnedlunar samples to Earth. His non-religious view of the heavens was one cause for his imprisonment and eventual exile.[1] In his little book On the Face in the Moon's Orb, Plutarch suggested that the Moon had deep recesses in which the light of the Sun did not reach and that the spots are nothing but the shadows of rivers or deep chasms. -

The descent probe is a carry-on small spacecraft (< 100 kg), to be deployed by the mother spacecraft, that brings itself onto a collisional trajectory with the targeted planetary body in a simple manner. A possible science payload includes instruments for surface imaging, characterisation of the neutral exosphere, and magnetic field and plasma measurement near the target body down to very low-altitudes (~1 km), during the probe’s fast (~km/s) descent to the surface until impact. The science goals and the concept of operation are discussed with particular reference to Europa, including options for flying through water plumes and after-impact retrieval of very-low altitude science data. -

Dawn (2007-18) was a mission to the two most massive bodies in the main asteroid belt - Vesta and Ceres. Key Points 1/3 Latest Findings: The scientists have given Ceres the status of an “ocean world” as it has a big reservoir of salty water underneath its frigid surface. This has led to an increased interest of scientists that the dwarf planet was maybe habitable or has the potential to be. Ocean Worlds is a term for ‘Water in the Solar System and Beyond’. The salty water originated in a brine reservoir spread hundreds of miles and about 40 km beneath the surface of the Ceres. Further, there is an evidence that Ceres remains geologically active with cryovolcanism - volcanoes oozing icy material. Instead of molten rock, cryovolcanoes or salty-mud volcanoes release frigid, salty water sometimes mixed with mud. Subsurface Oceans on other Celestial Bodies: Jupiter’s moon Europa, Saturn’s moon Enceladus, Neptune’s moon Triton, and the dwarf planet Pluto. This provides scientists a means to understand the history of the solar system. Ceres: It is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was the first member of the asteroid belt to be discovered when Giuseppe Piazzi spotted it in 1801. It is the only dwarf planet located in the inner solar system (includes planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars). Scientists classified it as a dwarf planet in 2006. -

By: Sydney There are eight phases of the moon. The new moon is the first phase. When we look at the new moon we see only a shadow. You cannot see the lighted half of the moon. In the new moon phase the moon, the sun, and the Earth are lined up. It rises in the east, the same as the sun and sets in the west the same time as the sun. The second phase of the moon is the waxing crescent. Waxing means getting larger. We only see a small part of the moon. The light is on the right side. The moon is no longer between the Earth and the sun. The waxing crescent is a thin crescent shape. The third phase of the moon is the first quarter. The first quarter is about one week after the new moon. Half of the moon is lit on the right in this phase. It is one-quarter of the way around the Earth. The first quarter moon looks like a semi-circle. It is also one-quarter of its way through the monthly phases. The fourth phase of the moon is the waxing gibbous. The waxing gibbous is when more than half of the moon is lit. It is almost a full moon. More of the moon is moving into the sunlight. The waxing gibbous is almost halfway through its orbit. The fifth phase of the moon is the full moon. The full moon is when you can see all of the lighted part of the moon. It happens about two weeks after the new moon. -

Credit: John Reader/Science Photo Library Luna 2 is the first human-made object to impact our Moon. 2 September 1959: First Human Object Impacts the Moon On 12 September 1959, a rocket launched from Earth carrying a 390 kg spacecraft headed to the Moon. Luna 2 flew through space for more than 30 hours before releasing a bright orange cloud of sodium gas which both allowed scientists to track the spacecraft and provided data on the behavior of gas in space. On 14 September 1959, Luna 2 crash-landed on the Moon, as did part of the rocket that carried the spacecraft there. These were the first items humans placed on an extraterrestrial surface. Ever. Gutzwiller IBM Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York 10598 The daily motion of the Moon through the sky has many unusual features that a careful observer can discover without the help of instruments. The three different frequencies for the three degrees of freedom have been known very accurately for 3000 years, and the geometric explanation of the Greek astronomers was basically correct. Whereas Kepler’s laws are sufficient for describing the motion of the planets around the Sun, even the most obvious facts about the lunar motion cannot be understood without the gravitational attraction of both the Earth and the Sun. Newton discussed this problem at great length, and with mixed success; it was the only testing ground for his Universal Gravitation. This background for today’s many-body theory is discussed in some detail because all the guiding principles for our understanding can be traced to the earliest developments of astronomy. They are the oldest results of scientific inquiry, and they were the first ones to be confirmed by the great physicist-mathematicians of the 18th century. By a variety of methods, Laplace was able to claim complete agreement of celestial mechanics with the astronomical observations. Lagrange initiated a new trend wherein the mathematical problems of mechanics could all be solved by the same uniform process; canonical transformations eventually won the field. They were used for the first time on a large scale by Delaunay to find the ultimate solution of the lunar problem by perturbing the solution of the two-body Earth-Moon problem. -

Be sure to bring your moon water inside before the sun rises. Use your moon water to water your plants, take a bath, make tea, and many other things, all the while reflecting on your set intention. Start by lighting a candle, focus on getting present and letting go of anything bothering you. Spend a moment thinking about what you want to release and what you want to attract. Take the paper and jot down the things you'd like to manifest over the next month. Place the wish list someplace special (a box or a jar) and then set it outside to soak up the moonlight. Bring in your list before the sun hits it the next morning to preserve the moon vibes. Place the list somewhere where you can see it each day. Take a moment each day to look at your list and reflect. -

How the Moon Phases Work Fact or fiction: The phases of the moon are caused by the shadow of the Earth falling on the moon? Fiction! This is one of the most commonly held misconceptions in all astronomy. Here’s how the moon’s phases really come about: The moon is a sphere that travels once around the Earth every 29.5 days. As it does so, it is illuminated from different angles by the sun. At “new moon,” the moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so the side of the moon facing us receives no direct sunlight and is lit only by the dim sunlight reflected from the Earth. As the moon moves around the Earth, the side we can see gradually becomes more and more illuminated by direct sunlight. When the illuminated side of the moon appears to be getting larger in size, the moon is said to be in a “waxing phase”. When the moon is illuminated from 1 % to 49 % the moon is in a “waxing crescent moon” phase. Many people say this looks like a banana or the letter C. 7 days later the moon is 90 degrees away from the Sun and is half illuminated. This phase is called “first quarter” because it is about a quarter of the way around the Earth. Over the next 7 days the moon continues to be in a waxing state. When the moon is illuminated from 51% to 99 %, the moon is in a “waxing gibbous phase”, so more than half of the moon is illuminated.
