FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films

  • Entrepreneurial Logics and the Evolution of Falun Gong
Entrepreneurial Logics and the Evolution of Falun Gong YUNFENG LU This article documents the shift of Falun Gong from a primarily secular healing system to a new religion centering on salvation. Emerging as a qigong organization in China in the early 1990s that provided immediate healing treatments to practitioners, Falun Gong eventually developed into a salvation-oriented religious firm. Mr. Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, played a vital role in promoting the movement’s transition. Facing the competitive qigong market, Mr. Li decided to differentiate Falun Gong from other competing qigong movements by offering a theory about salvation. He also adopted other organizational and doctrinal mechanisms that are useful in sustaining practitioners and preventing potential schisms. These strategies partly accounted for the growth of Falun Gong in the 1990s. This case study indicates that the religious economy model is helpful in understanding the evolution of Falun Gong, a new religion in contemporary China. INTRODUCTION Religions have been reviving in China since the 1980s. Such a revival can serve as something of a laboratory for sociologists to investigate the birth of new religions and the background against which they emerge. However, up to the present, the survival of religion in China is a somewhat neglected area of theoretical concern, especially to sociologists of religion (Lang 2004). This article uses insights from the “religious economy” model to examine the rise of a new religion in China. Grounded in exchange theory, the religious economy model provides a theory of the birth of religions. Assuming that people seek to gain rewards that are always limited in supply, and some of which actually do not exist in the observable world, Stark and his collaborators (Stark and Bainbridge 1980a, 1980b, 1981, 1985, 1987; Stark and Finke 2000) propose that humans will tend to formulate and accept explanations for obtaining rewards in the distant future or in some other nonverifiable context.

  • Alternate Paeans of Desire: the Chinese Film JU DOU and the American Play DESIRE UNDER the ELMS
Intercultural Communication Studies XIII: 3 2004 Zeng Alternate Paeans of Desire: the Chinese Film JU DOU and the American Play DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS Li Zeng University of Louisville Abstract The internationally acclaimed Chinese film Ju Dou (1990), directed by Zhang Yimou, is about a love triangle among a dye-house master with impotence, his young wife, and his nephew apprentice. Although the film is adapted from Liu Heng’s novella Fuxi fuxi (1988) whose title draws our attention to the Chinese myth about Fuxi and Nuwa–two siblings becoming spouses who created humankind, the incestuous relationship in the film reminds us of that in Eugene O’Neill’s play, Desire Under the Elms (1924). The situation of Ju Dou, as this paper sees, is the Ephraim-Abbie-Eben plot of the Desire Under the Elms which is modeled upon the Hippolytos-Phaidra-Theseus relationship in Greek mythology. Apart from the similarity of plot scenario, there is technical similarity between the two works. In comparing Ju Dou with Desire Under the Elms, the paper suggests that these two artists emotionally revealed different aspects of their view of life through similar dramatic plots and characters and that O’Neill not only influenced modern Chinese playwrights in the early decades of the twentieth-century but might still be in rapport with Chinese culture in the post-Mao era. INTRODUCTION Ju Dou is one of the famous Chinese films by Zhang Yimou, an internationally renowned film director in contemporary China. Financed in part by foreign capital, Ju Dou came out in 1990.1 Although the Chinese government banned the film domestically for two years and attempted to withdraw it from international competitions, Ju Dou was widely shown abroad, received the Luis Bunuel Award at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, and became the first Chinese movie to be nominated for an Oscar in 1991.2 An internationally acclaimed work, Ju Dou has fascinated a large number of audiences, film critics, and scholars of Chinese culture over the past decade.

04 Williams.qxd 6/10/2009 3:46 PM Page 89 GLOBAL ENGLISH IDEOGRAPHY AND THE DISSOLVE TRANSLATION IN HOLLYWOOD FILM R. John Williams The appearance of three Chinese actresses as Japanese geishas in Sony Pictures’ 2005 adaptation Memoirs of a Geisha injected new blood into an ongoing debate on the tense relationship between the- atrical “representation” and racial or cultural “identity.” Some review- ers argued that there was something jarringly strange, even politically incorrect, about coaching Chinese actresses to speak English with a Japanese accent. Others argued that the casting decisions were not discriminatory, but merely reXected the box ofWce star power of the Chinese actresses Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh who, even in Japan, are a stronger draw for audiences than any contemporary Japanese actresses. In the midst of this debate, however, no one thought to ask the more obvious question: why English in the Wrst place? Is Japanese-accented English merely intended here to signal an act of translation? Or is the real scandal (to twist a phrase from Lawrence Venuti) a lack of translation, an effort to “represent” or “stand in” for translation—to cause us to temporarily forget that one ever needs translation?1 Is there a connection, perhaps, between asking why En- glish in the Wrst place and why English, among other languages, seems always to be in “Wrst place”? These are, of course, the same questions one could ask of any num- ber of Hollywood Wlms. Why, for example, in Lasse Hallström’s Choco- lat (2000), is the French actress Juliette Binoche—like everyone else in the Wlm—speaking English? When did English become the lingua franca of provincial French villages? To have allowed for French dia- logue with English subtitles in this case, to re-present the process of translation rather than “represent” it (which is only to say “erase” it), would undoubtedly have been a less domesticating technique.
