Portuguese language in Angola: luso-creoles' missing link? John M. Lipski {presented at annual meeting of the AATSP, San Diego, August 9, 1995} 0. Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves. -
Akhenaten and Moses
Story 27 A k h e n a t e n . and MOSES !? Aten is a creator of the universe in ancient Egyptian mythology, usually regarded as a sun god represented by the sun's disk. His worship (Atenism) was instituted as the basis for the mostly monotheistic — in fact, monistic — religion of Amenhotep IV, who took the name Akhenaten. The worship of Aten ceased shortly after Akhenaten's death; while Nefertiti was knifed to death by the Amun priesthood! Fig. 1. The relief dated 1350BC of the sun disk of Aten is a lime stone slab, with traces of the draufts- man’s grid still on it, found in the Royal Tomb of Amarna, the ill-fated capital of the founder of mono- theism long before Moses claimed it for Judaism. Aten was the focus of Akhenaten's religion, but viewing Aten as Akhena- ten's god is a simplification. Aten is the name given to represent the solar disc. The term Aten was used to designate a disc, and since the sun was a disc, it gradually became associated with solar deities. Aten expresses indirectly the life-giving force of light. The full title of Akhenaten's god was The Rahorus who rejoices in the horizon, in his/her Name of the Light which is seen in the sun disc. (This is the title of the god as it appears on the numerous stelae which were placed to mark the boundaries of Akhenaten's new capital at Amarna, or "Akhetaten."). -

History of St. Michael the Archangel Parish. A Half Centry of Saint Michael Catholic Church, Olyphant, PA. 1912-1962. CAP at Orchard Lake. The growth of coal mining in the Lackawanna Valley brought a great number of Polish immi- grants to Olyphant at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Soon there arose a need for the establishment of a parish and the building of a church to serve these people. The organization of the parish was initiated by Mr. Joseph Kwiatek, a hotel owner in the borough, in the Spring of 1909. A committee was organized to lay the foundation of the new parish. The following men served on the committee: Messrs. Joseph Kwiatek, Michael Borys, Michael Ksydar, Louis Naglak, Joseph Guzek, Andrew Naglak, George Klocek, Joseph Pijar, John Pasko, John Swieton, Frank Szarek, Joseph Borys, Matthew Dutka, Anthony Oleniacz, and Jacob Czeluszniak. The first meeting of the committee was held in the home of Mr. Louis Naglak. It was decided at this meeting that a census be taken of the Polish families living in Olyphant and that affairs be held to raise money for the buying of property. On September 13, 1909 property was bought from Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Kelley. There were three homes on the property: one was to serve as a rectory; another was to become a convent; and the third was to be raised for the construction of a church. The Committee reported its progress to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Michael J. Hoban, who at that time was the Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. -

Whereas art cannot be taught, only commented up on, craft at least can be handed down: but the tricks of the trade do not make an elegant narrative, only a catalogue. This small collection of essays is just such a string of grits of wisdom and half-baked critical opinions, whichmaywell leave the reader feeling unsatis ed. One can only say to such a reader that any book claiming to reveal the secret of how to paint, or to write novels, should be recycled at once into something more genuinely artistic, say a papier-mach e sculpture. If there is any theme here, it is that standards count: not just of comp etent co ding, but of writing. -

The Old Testament in its Context: 1 From the Origins to the Eve of the Exodus by K A Kitchen Lecturer in the School of Archaeology and Oriental Studies, Liverpool University [p. 2] Conservative Old Testament scholars often seem to spend more time demolishing the views of others about the composition of the Old Testament than in putting forward their own positive theories about it. In the present brief series of articles Mr. Kitchen has been asked to devote his main attention to the outlining of a conservative view of the composition of the Old Testament. He stresses that the present article is merely complementary to his other writings on the subject; his footnote references will enable readers to consult these at the appropriate points. The aim of the series of articles of which this is the first part is simply to present an appreciation of the Old Testament books and data in the context of that world in which they came to be, namely the world of the Ancient Near East. It is the Hebrews’ own world of the twentieth to fourth centuries BC, and not the unverifiable speculations of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries AD, that alone can provide criteria of study that are both tangible/verifiable and relevant to study of the Old Testament and its contents. We must utilize the existing Old Testament because we have no other; major theoretical reconstructions which cannot be independently validated by external evidence as a touchstone are ipso facto creations of the imagination and cannot be accorded preference over the extant documents that we now have. -

Willis: The Biblical Testimony of Joseph: the Immanuel Perspective The Biblical Testimony of Joseph: the Immanuel Perspective John T. Willis mmanuel stands at the forefront of Christian thought. This word appears often in sermons, religious books, religious articles, songs, church classes, and common daily conversation. The word Immanuel is a Ivery ancient Hebrew word meaning literally “with us is God.” It falls into three parts. The most important element is El, which means “God.” God is at the heart of every biblical account. Thus, in the expression Immanuel, the emphasis is on God. Manu means “us,” biblically denoting God’s chosen people Israel. Im means “with,” a tiny but very important preposition denoting nearness or close association. (The Greek equivalent of “with” is sun [syn], sul [syl], sum [sym], from which English receives many familiar words like synagogue, “a gathering together”; Sanhedrin, “council”; sympathy, “suffering with”; symphony, “harmony of sounds”; and syllogism, “reckoning with.”) The testimony or account of Joseph in Genesis 37, 39—50 emphasizes that God was with Joseph at every stage of his life. -
