A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

CF99 1NA Dear Dr Phipps National Assembly for Wales Enterprise and Business Committee Inquiry into the future of the Wales and Borders Franchise We thank you for the opportunity to respond to the inquiry into the future of the Wales and Borders Franchise. STAG (Severn Tunnel Junction Rail Action Group) was founded about seven years ago by commuters concerned at a cut made to their cross-border service to Bristol. Since that time we have represented the views of regular travellers from both Severn Tunnel Junction and Caldicot Stations. Our aim is to work with others to ensure the public Transport interests of all in this area of Monmouth are fairly considered. During the period since we started we have seen a growth in the use of Severn Tunnel Junction of fifty-eight per cent (2005-06 to 2011-12. Source: ORR. The use of Severn Tunnel Junction has also doubled in use as an interchange station, and we believe this will increase much further with an extra 1,700 homes currently being built up the line at Lydney in Gloucestershire! Closer to home, many more houses are planned. At Severn Tunnel Junction we also have a site now planned to become a ‘Park and Ride’. Situated close to both M48 and M4 motorways it is well placed to relieve traffic congestion both locally, and around Newport and Cardiff. We trust you find our response helpful. -

Walking Through Dean History Walk 13 8 or 7 miles (13 or 11 km) Redbrook, The Kymin, and Staunton stones A former industrial centre, views of Welsh mountains from The Kymin, attractive woodland, and massive rock outcrops. A hilly walk on field paths and woodland tracks, with some steep ascents and descents, but superb views; 4 stiles. START at the car park by the River Wye in Redbrook, just north of the playing field, on the A466 Chepstow−Monmouth road: GR SO 536099. Refreshments: pub (The Bell) and shop in Redbrook; pubs in Penallt (The Boat) and Staunton (White Horse). Bus: 69 (Chepstow–Monmouth) to Redbrook. A48 Main Road Alvington Parish Appendix 8 Printable Version – (Double sided/duplex) September 2018 A48 Main Road – overview The A48 passes through the centre of Alvington, to the North for Gloucester and to the South for Chepstow, Newport and Cardiff. The A48 has very old origins, it was first thought to have been Roman, but this has never been proven. There is considerable Roman evidence in the area, thus there should be roads somewhere and hence it is easy to assume the A48 could have been Roman. There are however references to 1145 when the Bishop of Hereford granted Alvington Manor to Llanthony Priory, he mentioned the recent devastation of land and dispersal of the inhabitants and it is possible that the ordered plan of the village, with a series of long home closes, (houses with long gardens or orchards), extending North West and South East from the main Gloucester to Chepstow road, was created after the grant. This arrangement still exists today thus making it impossible to widen the A48 or the footpaths through the village. Until the first Severn and Wye Bridge crossing was opened in 1966, the A48 was part of the main route between London and South Wales. For a while the volume of traffic was greatly reduced, however the volume has increased with time. Possible reasons: 1. In 1966 not every household had a car, now 50 years later it is not uncommon for a household to have four cars. 2. Tolls on the Severn Bridge used to be split both ways but were changed to West bound only entry into Wales, hence a large number of HGV type vehicles now avoid the tolls by driving down the A48 to South Wales. -

PREFACE TO 1895 EDITION, OUTLINE OF CONTENTS & INDEX TO COMPANIES LISTED IN 1895 By 1895 the Stock Exchange Official Yearbook had settled into a format that it was to stay with for the duration. We reproduce the Preface, Outline of Contents and the Index to companies listed in 1895 to give readers an idea of the typical organisation of a yearbook, and of the great variety of companies covered in this and in future volumes. PREFACE. The year 1894 has not proved so favourable to business as was expected. This is chiefly due to the further considerable decline in the prices of natural products, and to some extent to the difficulty in bringing to a conclusion the tariff and other reforms in the United States to which President Cleveland had put his hand. But the year closes with a nearly complete absence of disturbing causes, though the prices of produce are still at their lowest, and the return to commercial and agricultural prosperity is in all parts of the world proceeding at an abnormally slow rate. But it is generally admitted that the worst is now more than over. This is an immense gain in itself, especially as regards Stock Exchange securities, amongst which selling from fear or necessity no sooner ceases than an upward movement on some scale sets in. A year ago we had to report a further considerable fall in the aggregate of Stock Exchange values; but for 1894 there has been a rise in prices which more than outsets the decline then reported, and to all appearance the upward movement is still in progress. -

WI News 2010 December: ~ December's walk: On a foggy December morning 13 members and friends set off from the old Saxon town of Cricklade, going along the Thames path, through an ancient Lammas meadow and then joining up with the disused section of two canals, Wilts & Berks and Thames & Severn. At Latton Junction a little festive refreshment was enjoyed. After arriving at Cerney Wick, field paths took us to the edge of one of the lakes in the eastern part of the Water Park. We then joined the railway path, previously The Midland and South Western Junction Railway, eventually reaching Cricklade and a delicious lunch at The White Hart. (December 2010 - photo courtesy of Jenny Hayne) ~ A happy buzz of chatter could be heard in Kington St Michael Village Hall when the WI was host to about 75 retired villagers on Sunday. As a gesture of friendship and community spirit each year their guests are invited to a festive Christmas gathering when mouth-watering home-made canapés are served and drinks flow freely. It is a lovely opportunity for villagers to get to know one another better, particularly if they are new to the area. President Viv Penney wished everyone a very happy Christmas on behalf of the WI. 1 November: ~ On a beautiful autumn morning 15 walkers left the War Memorial at Rode, an old woollen mill village. After passing Rode Hill House, which was the scene of one of the most infamous murders of the 19-century, we followed the River Frome to Farleigh Hungerford, where lunch was enjoyed at the Hungerford Arms, with beautiful views of the valley and castle ruins. -
