We want to eliminate the financial barrier that prevents families and individuals from experiencing our city’s vibrant, diverse arts scene. Inclusion in arts events builds communities, inspires creativity, and increases understanding of different stories and viewpoints. In addition, exposure to the arts, early and often, builds future audiences, strengthening the economy and culture of our city. Ballet Memphis 2 | ArtsAccess 2017/18 Here at ArtsMemphis, we’re working to sustain Memphis’ world-renowned cultural vitality and strengthen local communities through the arts. In 2017, we awarded over 150 grants to more than 70 local arts groups and individual artists, totaling nearly $3 million in annual funding. All of this is possible because of the support we receive from more than 1,100 generous donors. Gifts to ArtsMemphis support everything from local dance and theatre to museums and public art…not to mention film festivals, outdoor concerts, arts education, and more! ArtsAccess 2017/18 | 3 Memphis Music Initiative ArtsAccess Card How to use your ArtsAccess Card + Tickets for events are limited. + You may reserve up to 4 tickets per family. + To reserve tickets, call the organization offering the event. + Claim your tickets using your ArtsAccess Card at least 20 minutes before the event. + Some events do not allow children under the age of 5. + If you cannot attend an event that you have reserved tickets for, it is important to call ahead to cancel. + If you fail to pick up reserved tickets, you will not be able to participate in ArtsAccess the rest of the year.     AACTFest History AACTFest had its beginnings in 1957. At that time, the first World Festival of Amateur Theatre (Le Festival Mondiale du Théâtre Amateur) was held in the principality of Monaco under the high patronage of Their Serene Highnesses Prince Ranier and Princess Grace. The World Festival of Amateur Theatre was, and is, the official festival of the International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA). The typical American definition of amateur, implying a relative lack of skill, is not accepted by AITA/IATA. Amateur is used in the context of “to love”; thus, an amateur is one who does something for love and pleasure rather than for monetary remuneration. While AITA/IATA handles the international aspects, the festival itself is almost entirely a Monégasque production organized by the Studio de Monaco, home of the Cercle Artistique Monégasque d’Amateurs de Théâtre. Random theatres from America took turns representing the U.S. at this quadrennial international event. After eight years, the World Festival organization contacted the American National Theatre and Academy (ANTA). Through the offices of Princess Grace, ANTA was asked to provide input as to what theatres from the U.S. should attend the World Festival. ANTA felt it would be more appropriate to pass the invitation on to the American Community Theatre Association (ACTA). ACTA was the community theatre division of the seven year old American Theatre Association (ATA) umbrella organization. (In 1965 ACTA consisted of approximately 12 to 14 community theatres and had a membership of 40 to 50.) Howard Orms, the President of ACTA, contacted several theatres with no success.

In 1907, the theater became part of the Orpheum Vaudeville circuit and was renamed the Orpheum Theatre. In 1923, a fired destroyed the building, which was rebuilt. A new, larger theater opened in 1928. The Malco theater chain purchased the building in 1940, running first run movies until 1976. The following year, the Memphis Development Foundation purchased the Orpheum and began bringing Broadway productions and concerts back to the theater. The theater underwent another renovation in the early 1980s, restoring it to its 1928 grandeur. At present, the Orpheum continues to bring in performances and averages ten to twelve Broadway shows a year. The Orpheum Collection consists of two boxes spanning 1 linear foot. The collection contains materials from the Memphis and Shelby County Room pertaining to the Orpheum Theatre. Items in the collection include the souvenir opening programs from 1928 and 1984; Orpheum publications: Backstage, After Five, Broadway at the Orpheum, Marquee, and the Orpheum Circuit News; and miscellaneous memorabilia. Single photocopies or scans of unpublished writings in these papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. While the Memphis Public Library & Information Center may house an item, it does not necessarily hold the copyright on the item, nor may it be able to determine if the item is still protected under current copyright law.

    A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS From the directors: Glenda, Phillip, Nicole, Eric and Teresa Once in a lifetime, directors are given the opportunity to direct an awe in- spiring show. Les Misérables is just such a show. The collaboration between DLO Musical Theatre and DACC Players has been a powerful coming to- gether of two groups that, by themselves, could not have produced this show. The combinations of talent, from actors, singers, and musicians, to the directors and production staff, have put together a show that highlights what this community can do. From the directors’ perspective, it has been exciting to work with the tal- ented singers that have spent many hours without complaint in rehearsal. Every person in this show has worked well with the cast, the directing team and the production team.     The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection Processed by Joan Cannon 2007 Memphis and Shelby County Room Memphis Public Library and Information Center 3030 Poplar Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38111 Scope and Content The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection was donated to the Memphis Public Library and Information Center by many individual donors over several years. Consisting of programs from performances at Theatre Memphis between the years 1975 and 2007, the collection provides invaluable information on the operation of community theatre in Memphis. Each program includes the names of the director, cast and crew as well as information on the production. Theatre Memphis was established as the Little Theatre in 1921. For several years plays were performed in a variety of locations in Memphis including Germania Hall and the Nineteenth Century Club. In 1929 the Little Theatre was headquartered at the Pink Palace Museum Playhouse where they would remain until the mid-1970s. When the Pink Palace closed for renovations, the theatrical company opened their own venue on Perkins Extended in East Memphis.
