V.S. – Vossa Senhoria / Vuestra Señoria. 12 Introdução É comummente aceite que no continente europeu dos séculos XV e XVI coexistiam duas áreas geograficamente distintas - uma mediterrânica e outra atlântica -, com condições de navegação, tradições e experiências navais diversas, que, não obstante um intenso contacto humano e um significativo intercâmbio tecnológico, se traduziram na concepção e utilização de diferentes tipos de embarcações para a actividade comercial e para a guerra naval. De acordo com esta concepção, a galé é vista como o resultado de uma tradição construtiva milenar, adaptada a um espaço geográfico bastante delimitado e a condições atmosféricas estáveis e previsíveis, e com funções quase exclusivamente militares, enquanto o veleiro de alto bordo, simultaneamente transportador e embarcação de combate, adaptado á navegação nos vastos espaços oceânicos, é apresentado como o instrumento através do qual as sociedades europeias do litoral atlântico iniciaram uma nova era de descobrimento, de exploração e domínio de novos e vastos espaços geográficos. Apesar de globalmente correcta, esta visão não tem em conta alguns aspectos menos conhecidos da tecnologia naval mediterrânica, nem da sua difusão, nem do conhecimento náutico que do Atlântico possuíam, desde o início do século XIII, os marinheiros mediterrânicos, especialmente os do Tirreno e do Adriático, nem tão pouco das reais condições de navegação no Mediterrâneo, tão difíceis como imprevisíveis. Por outro lado, uma corrente historiográfica ainda hoje dominante associa a perda de influência da galé, enquanto embarcação de combate por excelência, ao declínio político, comercial e tecnológico do mundo mediterrânico, e à emergência das potências marítimas atlânticas. Contudo, os mais recentes trabalhos nas áreas da história, arqueologia e arquitectura navais têm contribuído decisivamente para a refutação do conceito de superioridade tecnológica e naval do mundo novo atlântico em relação ao velho mundo mediterrânico, e dentro daquele, dos Estados setentrionais sobre os ibéricos. 13 É neste sentido que, algumas situações aparentemente anómalas, como a persistência da utilização de galés, ou a proliferação de esquadras mediterrânicas de navios de alto bordo, no espaço marítimo atlântico, durante a primeira metade do século XVII, não devem ser entendidas como sintomas de atraso tecnológico, de erradas ou ultrapassadas concepções tácticas e estratégicas, ou de mera sobrevivência de um símbolo de prestígio principesco, mas sim como elementos de uma realidade complexa ainda não inteiramente compreendida. A presumida incapacidade da galé para suportar navegações atlânticas, ou a sua limitação a espaços que reproduzam as condições geográficas e atmosféricas do Mediterrâneo - caso do Mediterrâneo americano, tal como foi definido por Chaunu -, e a sua pretensa inferioridade bélica face aos navios de alto bordo de construção atlântica (a partir do terceiro quartel do século XVI), são dois dos pressupostos (nunca demonstrados) em que assenta o princípio da decadência dos navios longos e de remo (nas suas múltiplas formas) enquanto embarcações de combate, e, por extensão, da prematura decadência do mundo mediterrânico face à emergência dos Estados do Atlântico setentrional. No entanto, a galé de tipo mediterrânico continuou a ser utilizada no Atlântico europeu, no Mar do Norte e no Báltico até meados do século XVIII. Os derradeiros anos do reinado de Isabel I ficaram, aliás, assinalados pela implementação de um programa construtivo de galés como não se assistia em Inglaterra desde o reinado de Henrique VIII, e a arrojada iniciativa de Federico Spínola voltou a ser retomada no final do século XVII, embora com objectivos mais modestos, quando a Coroa francesa decidiu instalar uma base permanente de galés na cidade portuária de Dunquerque. Não é de mais assinalar que, não obstante o sucesso (fundamentalmente comercial) obtido pelos veleiros ingleses e holandeses no Mediterrâneo durante a primeira metade do século XVII, a que não foi alheio o clima de paz que a Europa então viveu, a maioria das potências navais mediterrânicas, apesar da 14 introdução de alterações na composição das suas armadas, manteve a sua preferência pela utilização de galés. Datam deste período o desenvolvimento de embarcações compósitas, que procuravam reunir de forma eficaz as melhores características de cada um dos tipos, e de novas tácticas de combate naval, que procuraram combinar eficazmente as características dos navios de vela e as embarcações de remo. Estructura do trabalho No capítulo primeiro procuraremos definir o âmbito geográfico – bastante extenso e diversificado – em que se movimentam as esquadras de galés hispânicas, e as condicionantes políticas, militares e económicas que determinaram a sua utilização

ABSTRACT The history of the British Army in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is generally associated with stories of British military victory and the campaigns of the Duke of Wellington. An intrinsic aspect of the historiography is the argument that, following British defeat in the Low Countries in 1795, the Army was transformed by the military reforms of His Royal Highness, Frederick Duke of York. This thesis provides a critical appraisal of the reform process with reference to the organisation, structure, ethos and learning capabilities of the British Army and evaluates the impact of the reforms upon British military performance in the Low Countries, in the period 1793 to 1814, via a series of narrative reconstructions. This thesis directly challenges the transformation argument and provides a re-evaluation of British military competency in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

    Textual Ghosts: Sidney, Shakespeare, and the Elizabethans in Caroline England Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rachel Ellen Clark, M.A. English Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Richard Dutton, Advisor Christopher Highley Alan Farmer Copyright by Rachel Ellen Clark 2011 Abstract This dissertation argues that during the reign of Charles I (1625-42), a powerful and long-lasting nationalist discourse emerged that embodied a conflicted nostalgia and located a primary source of English national identity in the Elizabethan era, rooted in the works of William Shakespeare, Sir Philip Sidney, John Lyly, and Ben Jonson. This Elizabethanism attempted to reconcile increasingly hostile conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, court and country, and elite and commoners. Remarkably, as I show by examining several Caroline texts in which Elizabethan ghosts appear, Caroline authors often resurrect long-dead Elizabethan figures to articulate not only Puritan views but also Arminian and Catholic ones. This tendency to complicate associations between the Elizabethan era and militant Protestantism also appears in Caroline plays by Thomas Heywood, Philip Massinger, and William Sampson that figure Queen Elizabeth as both ideally Protestant and dangerously ambiguous. Furthermore, Caroline Elizabethanism included reprintings and adaptations of Elizabethan literature that reshape the ideological significance of the Elizabethan era. The 1630s quarto editions of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan comedies The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew, and Love’s Labour’s Lost represent the Elizabethan era as the source of a native English wit that bridges social divides and negotiates the ii roles of powerful women (a renewed concern as Queen Henrietta Maria became more conspicuous at court).

    ENGLISH NAVAL STRATEGY INTHE 1590s SIMÓN ADAMS Profesor de Historia de la Universidad de Strathclyde Until quite recently, the Anglo-Spanish "War" in the period after the Armada of 1588 was one of the least studied subjects of the reign of Elizabeth. For many years, the standard narrative account of the 1590s was that published by the American historian E.P. Cheyney in two volumes in 1914 and 1926 (1). In the past decade, however, this situation has been transformed. Professor Wernham's edition of the List and Analysis ofState Papers Foreign Series (2) has been followed by his detailed study of military operations and diplomacy in the years 1588-1595 (3), and then by his edition of the documents relating to the "Portugal Voyage" of 1589 (4). Within the past two years, Professor MacCaffrey has published the final volume of his trilogy on Elizabeth's reign and Professor Loades his monograph on the Tudor Navy, while Dr. Hammer has completed his dissertation on the most controversial of the political figures of the decade, the 2nd Earl of Essex (5). Much therefore is a good deal clearer than it has been. Yet wider questions remain, particularly over the manner in which Elizabeth's government conducted the war with Spain. In their most recent work both Wernham and MacCaffrey argüe from positions they have established earlier: Wernham for a careful and defensive foreign and military policy, MacCaffrey for an essentially reactive one (6). The Spanish Match and Jacobean Political Thought, 1618-1624 Kimberley Jayne Hackett Ph.D University of York History Department July 2009 Abstract Seventeenth-century English political thought was once viewed as insular and bound by a common law mentality. Significant work has been done to revise this picture and highlight the role played by continental religious resistance theory and what has been termed 'classical republicanism'. In addition to identifying these wider influences, recent work has focused upon the development of a public sphere that reveals a more socially diverse engagement with politics, authority and opposition than has hitherto been acknowledged. Yet for the period before the Civil War our understanding of the way that several intellectual influences were interacting to inform a politically alert 'public' is unclear, and expressions of political opposition are often tied to a pre-determined category of religious affiliation. As religious tension erupted into conflict on the continent, James I's pursuit ofa Spanish bride for Prince Charles and determination to follow a diplomatic solution to the war put his policy direction at odds with a dominant swathe of public opinion. During the last years of his reign, therefore, James experienced an unprecedented amount of opposition to his government of England. This opposition was articulated through a variety of media, and began to raise questions beyond the conduct of policy in addressing fundamental issues of political authority. By examining the deployment of political ideas during the domestic crisis of the early 1620s, this thesis seeks to uncover the varied ways in which differing discourses upon authority and obedience were being articulated against royal government.

Zijn plan om Horatius uit te geven, bleef steken bij de commentaar op de Ars poetica en verscheen pas postuum in 1608.3 Verder toonde Torrentius zich een verdienstelijk dichter die vlot weg kon met de verschillende versmaten uit de klassieke Latijnse poëzie. De eerste druk van deze Poemata Sacra verscheen bij Plantijn in Antwerpen in 1572, maar de steeds verder aangroeiende verzameling kende nog drie uitgaven, respectievelijk in 1575, 1579 en 1594. Naast Oden aan de vrienden uit de periode dat hij in Rome verbleef en gedichten naar aanleiding van historische gebeurtenissen als de slag bij Lepanto (1571), de moord op Willem de Zwijger (1584) en de inname van Antwerpen door Alexander Farnese (1585), ging Torrentius zich van langsom meer toeleggen op religieuze onderwerpen. Toen hij in de jaren tachtig steeds meer in beslag werd genomen door zijn beroepsbezigheden als rechterhand van de Luikse prins-bisschoppen en vanaf 1587 als tweede bisschop van Antwerpen, ging dat ten koste van zijn literaire activiteiten.

    The Marlowe Society The French Connection (Part 2): Research Journal - Volume 07 - 2010 On the Trail of Jacques Le Doux Online Research Journal Article C.W.H.Gamble The French Connection (Part 2) On the Trail of Jacques Le Doux Introduction This article is the sequel to an essay first published in 2009 in the Online Research Journal of the Marlowe Society (Vol.6) 1, under the title The French Connection: New Leads on Monsieur Le Doux . In view of the extent of the new documentary evidence here presented, and the chronological overlap, the reader may wish to refer to the previous article for additional information on the links between “Le Doux” and Christopher Marlowe, and indeed on Marlowe’s claim to the authorship of the works of “Shake-speare”. I should begin by giving a brief outline of the background to the historical events and negotiations which are discussed in both articles, with apologies to those readers for whom this is already familiar ground: 1. In 1568 the United Provinces of the Netherlands rose in revolt against Spanish Habsburg rule. Their cause gained the open support of Queen Elizabeth during the mid-1580s; England provided both funds and military forces for the continuance of the war against Spanish occupation, a lengthy conflict which was not resolved until 1609, when peace was made with Spain. The Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux, saw service in the Netherlands under the Earl of Leicester (1585-1586) and later, in 1591, led a force into France in support of King Henri IV against the Catholic League; Essex’s brother Walter was killed at the siege of Rouen.
