Szeretettel és megkülönböztetett tisztelettel köszöntöm az olvasót a Kaleidoscope Mővelıdés- Tudomány- és Orvostörténeti Folyóirat honlapján. A folyóirat megjelenésének célja, hogy elérhetıvé tegye, több oldalról megvilágítsa az orvostörténeti kutatások, események, problémák értelmezését, a tudomány különbözı területein. Kutatásaink központja az ember: az egészség-betegség, a gyógyítás szemlélete, orvosi antropológia, betegségek, járványok, caritas, könyörületesség, egészséges életre törekvés, és mindaz, ami az orvostörténet témáinak tárgya, s azok tágabb értelmezése a tudományok és a mővelıdéstörténet területein, az ókortól napjainkig. Célunk továbbá, hogy a hazai és nemzetközi kutatók, PhD hallgatók, rövid idın belül, széles olvasói tábor számára tudják átadni új kutatásaik eredményeit. A Szerkesztıbizottság és a Tudományos Tanácsadó Testület tagjai tárgyhoz kötıdı legrangosabb magyar és nemzetközi kutatók, elméleti szakemberek, egyetemi oktatók, akiknek személye garancia arra, hogy a folyóirat nemzetközi rangra emelkedik. Nagy múltú intézmények (egyetemek, levéltárak, múzeumok stb.) is csatlakoztak munkánkhoz, s ez nemkülönben jelentıs segítség ahhoz, hogy a Kaleidoscope a szakma figyelemre méltó fórumává váljon. Ezúton köszönöm meg minden támogatónak, szerkesztınek és résztvevınek kiváló munkáját, a szakmai tanácsokat és segítséget. Another objective is that the domestic and international researchers, the PhD students within a short time, for a large camp of the readers could to pass the new results of research. The members of the Editorial Board and Scientific Advisory Board are the prestigious Hungarian and international researchers, academics, university lecturers, who are guarantee the rank of rise this international journal. Prestigious institutions (universities, archives, museums etc) have joined our work, and that, furthermore, substantial assistance to the Kaleidoscope could be a remarkable forum. The chosen name of the journal is "Kaleidoscope" came from the Greek kalosz, eidosz and scope, it means the "beautiful view forms" of game. To discover the multi colour themes of our Journal and for the "colour game" I want to watch a good read. dr. Judit Forrai Founding editor in chief Bevezetı Népegészségtan Intézet nagy örömmel támogatja az Orvostörténeti Munkacsoportunk új kezdeményezését a Kaleidoscope - Mővelıdés- Tudomány és Orvostörténeti Lap megjelenését. A lap tematikája az orvostörténet multidiszciplínáris bemutatása, amely magába foglalja a gyógyítás, a betegségek, az eszközök, az emberi kapcsolatoknak különleges formáit beleágyazva a mindennapi élet kultúrájába, szociális-gazdasági helyzetébe. A történeti szemlélet kialakítása segít az összefüggések fejlıdésének felismerésében, az orvosi diszciplína megértésében a mai világban, ahol a szakosodás következtében szinte alig tudjuk követni a saját szakterületünk, vagy a határterületen tapasztalható robbanásszerő fejlıdést, információáradatot. Ugyanakkor a medicina is átitatódik a többi tudomány, társadalom- és természettudomány felismeréseivel és divatos eszméivel, kutatási eredményeivel. Az orvosi gondolkodás minden korban híven tükrözi a természethez és a társadalomhoz kapcsolódás helyzetét. Az orvostörténelem mővelése és egyetemi oktatása Magyarországon 1835-ig nyúlik vissza, amikor az elsı, új szemlélető, úgynevezett oknyomozó orvos- és sebészettörténet elıadója Schöpf-Merei Ágost kiváló gyermekgyógyász volt. Utódjaival méltó múltat teremtett a mai mővelıdés- tudomány- és orvostörténeti kutatásoknak és oktatásnak.     ^y Number 7 6c 8 March & April 1969 Volume 7 MATCHBOX LABELS - Jim Hughes - Recently a set of 120 Hungarian 'matchbox labels' came into my possession which portray many of the Modern Olympic Medalists. These labels are printed in blue and are numbered from 1-120, inscribed with the initials "M S Z" which I am told stands for "Magyar SrovetBeg" (Hungarian Federation) with each label printed with a /+0f value, on white paper measuring 3/+ x 50mm. I believe these labels were issued in I960, but I have as yet been unable to learn the complete atory behind them, however it is doubtful that they were issued for fund raising purposes. Perhaps some of our members can shed more light on this set as well as other Hungarian matchbox labels which I have just learned do exist. I am told these labels are printed in various colors, and on various colored paper featuring athletes and views of the Rome Olympics. If any of our members have them I would like to borrow or purchase them, so that the data on them can be recorded here. This set of matchbox labels from Hungary features a vivid history of the Modern Olympic Games from the First International Olympic Committee session of 189<+ in Paris (on No. t\) down to the clos­ ing ceremonies in Rone (No. 120) where the scoreboard is lit up with the word TOKYO. Following is a list of the Olympic Medalists pictured on this set of Hungarian matchbox labels, in alphabetical order. Names preceded by an («) were previously listed and their records can be found in the first section of this series.

    RÉCITS / HISTOIRES Les chênes de 1936 J’avais lu cet article sur slate.fr alors que je faisais des recherches sur cet étrange chêne au port tout malmené que j’avais observé l’été précédent lors de ma visite du stade olympique de Berlin. Un chêne dont la forme était tordue et un peu laide, à force, sans doute, d’avoir été rabattu et étêté dans le but de le rajeunir. Les feuilles repoussaient directement en touffe sur les gros moignons de bois, comme une mauvaise coupe de cheveux, dont on espérait que la repousse ne soit pas trop longue… Par Armande Jammes 18 DÉCEMBRE 2017 Le chêne, avais-je appris, était devenu un symbole de l’Alle- magne pendant les guerres napoléoniennes. Lors de la const- ruction en 1913 du premier stade olympique de Berlin en 1913 (pour des jeux qui n’eurent jamais lieu) on en avait plan- té un que l’on avait baptisé Chêne de Von Podbielski en l’hon- neur d’un homme Viktor Von Podbielski qui avait servi la cause du sport allemand. À la construction du nouveau stade en 1936, on avait apparemment conservé l’un des arbres sans être sûr que ce fut le bon. Son positionnement juste à droite après le passage des grilles était un peu étrange au sein de ce lieu dont le dessin était entièrement maîtrisé. Le comité olym- pique avait décidé que chaque vainqueur recevrait en plus de sa médaille, une couronne de feuilles de chêne, ainsi qu’un jeune plant d’un an. L’idée venait, disait-on, d’un pépiniériste allemand qui peut-être voyait là une bonne occasion de Naoto Tajima, Jesse Owens, Lutz Long.

    The tennis stadium proved to be very suitable for the fencing bouts. The cupola hall of the House of German Sport was the scene of many exciting competitions. INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS Fencing Number of Competitors Rounds Single Bouts Hits Recorded By far the heaviest demands upon the programme of the Xlth Olympic Games were made by the Foils (Ladies) 41 13 227 1612 fencing competitions. From the first to the last day, from early morning to late in the evening, Foils (Men) 62 22 395 2901 fencing was in progress. Long after the silence of night had enshrouded the Olympic arenas, one Epée (Men) 68 15 557 2395 Sabres (Men) 71 19 392 2863 could still hear the clash of weapons in the Cupola Hall of the House of German Sport on the Reich Sport Field. It was a tournament of gigantic magnitude. The programme corresponded exactly with Total 242 69 1571 9771 that of the Games from 1924 to 1932: There were individual events and team competitions for men TEAM COMPETITIONS in foils, épée and sabres; furthermore individual foils' contests for ladies. However, for Greek merchants in Pest, the German majority, it was not an easy task. In 1699, among the founders of the Guild of Pest Traders, we find the Greek Emmanuel Miklós, who can be the same as Emmanuel de Nicora and a Manoli Miklós dealer. He was the most prestigious Greek person of his age. He won civic rights in 1694, and in 1705 he was elected to the council. Manol - as a non-voting member - was registered as a forensic jury. He also won nobility. At the time of his death in 1736, he had thirty-one cows, ten thousand forints cash and the same amount of tobacco. Miklós Manoli's eldest son continued trading, serving as a middle military officer and third as a postman at Lúgos. At that time, some of the Greeks had already won civil rights (Miklós Pusztay in 1696, Emanuel Pasics in 1697, Miklós Grec in 1699) after they all bought a house in Pest. The population of Pest was still small at that time, and his commercial life was weak.

Dr. Szabó Lajos: A legismertebb magyarországi zsidó származású sportemberek A zsidóság, illetve minden kisebbség esetében a sportnak fontos társadalmi szerepe van. A társadalom egészét nézve a sport, illetve annak a testnevelés része a katonai előképzés és a honvédelem szempontjából nyert létjogosultságot, de már a XIX. században is hangoztatták az egészségmegőrzés fontosságát, és a szórakozás, szórakoztatás is a sport funkcióihoz tartozott. A kisebbségek esetében az emancipáció, a helyi és nemzeti identitás képzése, illetve az asszimiláció is fontos szerepet kapott, hiszen a nemzetközileg is mérhető sportsiker hozzájárult az elfogadáshoz, elfogadtatáshoz. Az akkori magyarországi társadalmi közegben a sport rendkívül hasznos volt a városi zsidóság asszimiliációs szándékában. Ennek nem sok helyen találni nyomát, de az Herkulesben már 1885-ben megjelent a címlapon egy cikk, ami szinte zsidó sportegyletet követel. A címe már önmagában izgalmas: Demokráczia a sportban. A cikk többek között a zsidó származású ifjúság elfogadásáról szól a pályákon és az öltözőkben. Három évvel a megjelenése után alakult meg az MTK, és ha a klub akkor vállalja zsidó orientációját - amit nem tett meg nyilvánosan -, a világ első zsidó sportegyesülete lehetett volna. Az MTK által is jelzett asszimilációs szándékot Schuschny Henrik híres iskolai sportorvos plasztikusan fogalmazta meg az Izraelita Magyar Irodalmi Társulat Évkönyvében, 1896-ban. Arról ír, hogy mi is az, amit a zsidó sport jelent, illetve hogyan kell viszonyulnia a városi zsidóságnak a társadalomhoz. „A testi nevelés, ha czéltudatosan történik, fokozza nemcsak a testi erőt, de egyszersmind növeli az önbizalmat és az önérzetet. (,..) Ha a magyar zsidó hazafiságán és műveltségén kívül egészséges, edzett testtel és önérzettel fog rendelkezni, akkor csak vallása révén lesz különbség közte és a haza más hazafias érzelmű lakója közöli.

The best thing in sports is that we (can) believe that at least the competition on the grass of the stadium or in the swimming pool will be won by that athlete who gives the best performance at that time. In the competition, intellectual faculties will play an important- role. This is one of the theses of Nordau, who declares that "the precondition of physical elasticity and skilfulness is mental elasticity and a clear mind.' But no physical strength is enough if born with – or obtained by – a dull-minded, simple, boorish man to make him an athlete'. That sportsman whose nation had to fight for centuries even for its mere existence we may say carries the will to fight in his chromosomes". Another important question is the character of the sport of the Jewish in Hungary.
