^Y SPORTS and OLYMPICS ^y Number 7 6c 8 March & April 1969 Volume 7 MATCHBOX LABELS - Jim Hughes - Recently a set of 120 Hungarian 'matchbox labels' came into my possession which portray many of the Modern Olympic Medalists. These labels are printed in blue and are numbered from 1-120, inscribed with the initials "M S Z" which I am told stands for "Magyar SrovetBeg" (Hungarian Federation) with each label printed with a /+0f value, on white paper measuring 3/+ x 50mm. I believe these labels were issued in I960, but I have as yet been unable to learn the complete atory behind them, however it is doubtful that they were issued for fund raising purposes. Perhaps some of our members can shed more light on this set as well as other Hungarian matchbox labels which I have just learned do exist. I am told these labels are printed in various colors, and on various colored paper featuring athletes and views of the Rome Olympics. If any of our members have them I would like to borrow or purchase them, so that the data on them can be recorded here. This set of matchbox labels from Hungary features a vivid history of the Modern Olympic Games from the First International Olympic Committee session of 189<+ in Paris (on No. t\) down to the clos ing ceremonies in Rone (No. 120) where the scoreboard is lit up with the word TOKYO. Following is a list of the Olympic Medalists pictured on this set of Hungarian matchbox labels, in alphabetical order. Names preceded by an («) were previously listed and their records can be found in the first section of this series. As these labels were crudely printed from newspaper photographs it is doubtful if we will be able to clearly reproduce them here. Becoming Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs Bernadette Flynn Low, PhD The Frick Family and Victorian Era Values Mary Sloan Frick was born in 1851 and grew up in a privileged position as one of the prominent Frick family of Baltimore. Mary’s father, William Frederick Frick, descended from John Frick, an immigrant from Holland who helped establish Germantown, Pennsylvania. John’s son, Peter Frick, settled in Baltimore, where his own son, William Frick, became an esteemed judge and community leader. William had several children, including William Frederick, Mary’s father. Like his father, William Frederick studied law and graduated from Harvard Law School. Returning to Baltimore, he became one of the first four members of the Baltimore Bar. Mary, appreciative of her heritage, also traced the ancestry of her mother, Ann Elizabeth Swan, to Sir George Yeardley, the first governor of Virginia, and General John Swan, a Scottish immigrant who served in the Revolutionary War and was promoted by General George Washington. After the war, Swan was honored with a Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs. parcel of land by a grateful nation. There he built an estate near Catonsville, Maryland, that would later be named Uplands. You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

  • DISCOURS a L'occasion DE LA FETE NATIONALE 14 Juillet 2015, Résidence De France À La Haye
Ambassade de France aux Pays-Bas DISCOURS A L'OCCASION DE LA FETE NATIONALE 14 juillet 2015, Résidence de France à La Haye Welcome to our national day celebration. We are all very happy to see so many friends with whom we enjoy so much working all year round. I would like to start by thanking all the sponsors who have made our gathering tonight at the French Residence possible. The 14th of July is always an opportunity to revisit what is at the very core of the French Republic, the values of freedom, equality and fraternity. 2015 started with the terrorist acts in Paris which were a direct attack against the universal values of freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of conscience. The reaction, starting here in the Netherland, was of great comfort to my fellow-citizens and I would like to express once again our deepest gratitude for the very many messages of solidarity that we received from the Dutch authorities, the local governments and the Dutch people. Terrorism, which strikes all around the world, is definitely one of the biggest challenges of our time. Facing it requires a lot of unity, including within our own societies, as well as more international cooperation. The same goes for all the other challenges that we are confronted with : the challenge of migration which goes hand in hand with the desperation of people originating from areas of conflict ; the security threats linked to the unresolved tensions at the very door-step of Europe and, in this respect, we all have in mind what happened just one year ago with flight MH 17 ; the challenge of climate change which we will have a unique opportunity to address in reaching an agreement at the Paris conference on climate change at the end of this year.
