  • The Search for San Ffraid
The Search for San Ffraid ‘A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts’ 2012 Jeanne Mehan 1 Abstract The Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, called in Ireland and Scotland St Brigid (also called Bride, Ffraid, Bhríde, Bridget, and Birgitta) have not previously been documented. This Irish saint is said to have traveled to Wales, but the Welsh evidence comprises a single fifteenth-century Welsh poem by Iorwerth Fynglwyd; numerous geographical dedications, including nearly two dozen churches; and references in the arts, literature, and histories. This dissertation for the first time gathers together in one place the Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, integrating the separate pieces to reveal a more focused image of a saint of obvious importance in Wales. As part of this discussion, the dissertation addresses questions about the relationship, if any, of San Ffraid, St Brigid of Kildare, and St Birgitta of Sweden; the likelihood of one San Ffraid in the south and another in the north; and the inclusion of the goddess Brigid in the portrait of San Ffraid. 2 Contents ABSTRACT ........................................................................................................................ 2 CONTENTS........................................................................................................................ 3 FIGURES ...........................................................................................................................

  • Eisteddfod Swyddffynnon 2021 Yn Anffodus Eleni Ni Fu Modd I Ni
Eisteddfod Swyddffynnon 2021 Yn anffodus eleni ni fu modd i ni gynnal yr Eisteddfod yn ôl yr arfer a hynny oherwydd sefyllfa Covid-19. Felly, nôl yn yr Hydref wrth orfod gwneud penderfyniad, cytunwyd y byddem yn medru parhau efo’r cystadlaethau llenyddiaeth a ffotograffiaeth, a glynnu at gyhoeddi’r canlyniadau ar ddiwrnod yr Eisteddfod, sef 26ain Chwefror 2021. Y beirniaid Llenyddiaeth oedd John a Menna Jones, Ffair Rhos a dyma eu beirniadaeth hwy i chi o’r cyfansoddiadau a ddaeth i law: Bobol bach-am gystadlu! Mae’r pandemig byd eang wedi creu poenau a thristwch i filiynau ac mae’n parhau i wneud hynny. Ond yng nghanol y cloeon mawr a newid ffordd o fyw, mae ein beirdd a’n llenorion wedi dal ati i greu a hynny ar raddfa tu hwnt o swmpus. Er gwaethaf gohirio Eisteddfodau, ni ddinistriwyd yr awen, ac mae cynhyrchion llenyddol Eisteddfod Swyddffynnon 2021 yn brawf pendant o hynny. Roeddem wedi gobeithio cael rhyw ddwsin i bymtheg o ymdrechion ymhob categori, ond pan gyrhaeddodd y cyfansoddiadau drwy law’r ysgrifenyddes, Annwen Isaac, dros y penwythnos, aed ati i gyfri, ac er mai ond pedair cystadleuaeth lenyddol oedd yno, derbyniwyd 258 o ymdrechion - ie, 258. Anhygoel, a phob un o safon gymeradwy. Tasg cwbl amhosibl bron oedd mynd ati i wneud penderfyniadau, a bu darllen a darllen a darllen, gan greu pentyrrau di-ri ar y bwrdd oedd lawer rhy fach i’r broses ddidoli. Ond wedi tridiau a their noson lafurus, rhaid oedd dod i ryw fath o derfyn, ac weithiau nid yw dau ben yn well nag un gan fod gwahaniaeth barn yn medru creu anghytundeb!!! Fodd bynnag, dyma ni o’r diwedd wedi cytuno, gan bwysleisio mai’n naturiol chwaeth bersonol sydd wedi ein cynorthwyo i osod trefn.

THE ROLE OF RITUAL AND CEREMONIAL IN THE REIGN OF EDWARD I by MARLA LYNN MORRIS Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON December 2012 Copyright © by Marla Lynn Morris All Rights Reserved ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my incredible thesis committee, Sarah Davis-Secord, Elisabeth Cawthon and Steven Reinhardt, for the generosity of their time, efforts and direction, and especially for their overwhelming encouragement, unwavering moral support, and faith in me during a very difficult and trying time in my life. November 14, 2012 iii Abstract THE ROLE OF RITUAL AND CEREMONIAL IN THE REIGN OF EDWARD I Marla Lynn Morris, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2012 Supervising Professor: Sarah Davis-Secord Often it is said that no one is better at pomp and pageantry than the British monarchy, and indeed, this has been the case at least since the time when medieval kings ruled England. One monarch in particular stands out as having successfully utilized royal ritual and ceremonial to great political, military and personal gain. Edward I is widely considered one of England’s most dynamic, respected and successful monarchs. Called a “precedent seeker,”1 the king’s reign was “. one of the most pivotal in the whole of British history, a moment when the destinies of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland were decided.”2 Edward summoned the biggest armies and convened the largest parliaments seen in England during the entire span of the Middle Ages.
