ABSTRACT The growth of self-consciousness throughout history takes place in a context of duality between a subjective and an objective awareness of the world. Rational thinking and speech, mind and words shape the individual´s concern with the knowledge of his/her nature as a physical and a spiritual being. The search for self-fulfilment in the perception of affinity between the sensual and the spiritual that results from mystical experience is integrated within the poetic discourse that finds evidence of such continuity between world and thought by means of imagination. This thesis aims to study how the influence of mysticism and imagination in the individual´s intellectual advance and in the poetic discourse in America, especially when filtered through Romantic and Transcendentalist thought, significantly contributes to the construction of a path towards self-knowledge. This dissertation examines the concepts of mysticism and imagination in 19th and 20th century American poetry and poetic discourse through an in-depth study of a selection of poetic and philosophical works by Jones Very (1813 – 1880), Wallace Stevens (1879 – 1955) and Stanley Cavell (1926 – 2018). Jones Very, Wallace Stevens and Stanley Cavell see the uncommon within the common. Their poetry, their essays and their analysis of poetic discourse give a response to existential concerns related to identity and self-knowledge that are still key in 21st century America. Immersed in a mystical experience and as inheritors of romantic thought, they pierce the emblematic power of language and the spiritual condition of the sensual world out of an intuitive insight and imagination. Through their creativity and imagination and as artists committed to the power of language, Very, Stevens and Cavell epitomize the process of transformation in the individual´s intellectual growth into self-knowledge. We need the mystic´s insight and the romantic´s imagination, the poet´s voice and the philosopher´s thought to shape the state of intimacy between the world and thought. Angelus Silesius INTRODUCTION: THE CONDITION OF BEING. THE NEED TO KNOW If we should name two of the main features that define human beings, those would undoubtedly be rational thinking and speech. Both are innate to us and their evolution draws the map of our intellectual growth. Mind and words shape the individual´s awareness of the necessary conditions to grow into the knowledge of his nature as a being. This intellectual growth must be understood as a progressive broadening of self-consciousness; and this broadening would be subsequent to the awareness of a change in the individual´s perception of his existence not only as a physical being but as a spiritual one. Likewise, the experience of life and interaction with the world are part of the individual´s growth into self-knowledge. There seems to be an innate desire in human being to go further into that ability of the mind that may bring the individual to wisdom. This innate desire to approach wisdom encourages the individual´s intellectual growth as an act of matching sensual and spiritual experiences into world-shaping and imaginative thoughts, such as those Emerson subtly defines as “a gleam of light”: “A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within” (Emerson Essays and Lectures: Self-Reliance 259). The growth of consciousness within the individual throughout history has often taken place in a context of duality between a subjective and an objective awareness of reality. Reality as the result of the individual´s experience of the world could not only be understood as an objective experience beyond the senses, but also as a subjective approach as far as it is concerned with the individual´s thought and inner interpretation of the world –an inner view encouraged by the contemplation of the outer. This inner comprehension of the outer becomes an experience which has eventually instilled in the individual´s thought, in the mystic´s meditative attitude and in the poet´s words a feeling of continuity between matter and soul. The individual becomes aware and attains knowledge within this context of duality. 5 Consciousness stems from knowledge and knowledge is at the core of what makes human beings. And this duality evolved during Romanticism and in 19th century America into a need of continuity between the inner and the outer. The search for self- fulfilment in the perception of affinity between the sensual and the spiritual that resulted from mystical experience was thus integrated within a philosophical and poetic context that tried to find evidence of such continuity between world and thought, thus bridging the gap created by a dualistic vision. 6 Objectives This thesis aims to examine the concepts of mysticism and imagination in 19th and 20th century American poetry and poetic discourse through an in-depth study of a selection of poetic and philosophical works by Jones Very (1813 – 1880), Wallace Stevens (1879 – 1955) and Stanley Cavell (1926 – 2018). Both terms, mysticism and imagination, have influenced the individual´s intellectual advance and poetry´s mystical discourse in America, especially when filtered through Romantic and Transcendentalist thought, has significantly contributed to the construction of a path towards self- knowledge. Mystical elements that have carved this path of the individual towards self- knowledge include meditation and reflection, revelation, intuition and the role of language and expression. These mystical tools can be traced in the writings of many American poets and philosophers of the 19th and 20th centuries and most especially in the works of Very, Stevens and Cavell, as we will see throughout this dissertation, where I will demonstrate the relevance of the concepts of mysticism and imagination in the development and continuity of a line of philosophical thought –the individual´s concern with the knowledge of the nature of his being– and its literary expression from its origins in the classical world to the present in the United States.

As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    Estetyka The Polish Journal i Krytyka of Aesthetics 43 (4/2016), DOI: 10.19205/43.16.3 Magdalena Filipczuk* “Epistemological Reading”: Stanley Cavell’s Method of Reading Literature1 Abstract Not many readers will recognize Disowning Knowledge: Seven Plays of Shakespeare by Stanley Cavell as either a piece of philosophical writing or literary criticism, so it may be useful to ask what method Cavell uses to read literature, what are the main features of his approach, and whether he has a coherent view on what reading lit‑ erature means. I examine Cavell’s interdisciplinary eclecticism, the feature which makes his work so original, and I describe his moving away from the British and American analytic tradition in which he was trained to other sources of inspiration, especially Thoreau. I also stress the important fact that Cavell does not avoid auto‑ biographical motifs in his writings, the style of which derives to some extent from the Jewish tradition of storytelling. In his writings Cavell declares his adherence to an ahistorical approach, maintaining that in a sense philosophy is trans‑histor‑ ical. In many of his books the central issue is the challenge that skepticism poses, and he endeavors to make a convincing case against it.     Transcendentalism: A Critique of Today’s World Through the Eyes of a Nineteenth Century Transcendentalist Throughout history, human thought has shaped the processes and actions that make up the world we live in today. It has been at the root of every war as well as every treaty and negotiation. Human thought has fueled hatred and acceptance, wrath and peace, and it has endured through history despite each attempt to repress it. There have been intellectual movements throughout history in which human thought has influenced society’s culture and how it approaches its members and problems. Two such time periods were the Enlightenment and the Second Great Awakening, the latter of which being when Transcendentalism first came to the forefront of human thought. Transcendentalism was a spiritual and philosophical movement that developed in the 1820s and 1830s with roots in Kantian philosophy and German Romanticism.1 This philosophy argued for individualism and each person’s ability to make sense of the Universe through their own Spirit and Reason. In today’s world, Transcendentalist thought is ​ often overlooked and is rarely taught or practiced. Regardless, modern society reflects the one in which Transcendentalists lived in the sense that they have both been marked by technological revolutions and the current societal issues are products of those that Transcendentalists once fought against. It is for this reason that we must look at what Transcendentalism is and how Transcendentalists responded to their society and its problems so that we may begin to do the same within our own society. Looking back over the course of Elizabeth Palmer Pea-body ’ s life, every important development in her early years seems to have prepared her for a life in educational reform and a role as America ’ s foremost advocate of kindergarten education. Her mother, Elizabeth Palmer, was an “ independent, well educated ” woman who managed a boardinghouse for students in Atkinson, New Hampshire, and went by the name of the “ Walking Dictionary ” because her extensive reading enabled her to answer all questions put to her by the boarders. Palmer married Nathaniel Peabody, a teacher at the academy, in November 1802 and moved to Andover, Massachusetts, where they administered the North Andover Free School. In 1804 they moved again, to Billerica, Massachusetts, where Elizabeth Palmer Peabody was born on 16 May. There Elizabeth ’ s mother established a boarding school for girls but abandoned it after two years and moved again to Cambridge and finally to Salem, where Peabody spent the remainder of her childhood. In Salem, Elizabeth ’ s mother established a school for children and pioneered an innovative approach to early childhood education that would make a lasting impression on her daughter. “ It seems to me, ” she remarked some years later, “ that the self- activity of the mind was cultivated by my mother ’ s method in her school. Not so much was poured in — more was brought out. ” Peabody followed in her mother ’ s footsteps in one other important way: education was at the center of her life from an early age.

    Early Theatre 8.1 (2005) Book Reviews Stanley Cavell. Disowning Knowledge in Seven Plays by Shakespeare. Updated edition. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003. Pp 250. The first essay in this collection, ‘Disowning Knowledge in King Lear,’ was written in 1967 and published in 1969 as the culminating exemplification of the philosophical argument of Stanley Cavell’s Must We Mean What We Say?1 It was subsequently republished in 1987, as the first essay of the original edition of Disowning Knowledge, Cavell’s magisterial reading of Shakespeare’s tragic drama. 1967, 1987, 2003. These dates tell the story of an extraordinary philosopher and critic whose work has never been part of mainstream Shakes- peare scholarship, but which exposes the blind spots and evasions of that criticism while at the same time anticipating many of its fruitful directions. Amongst scholars of literature the pioneering essay on King Lear is probably Cavell’s best known work. It most clearly sets the stage for Cavell’s abiding, some might say obsessive, interest in the equally alluring and incapacitating role of scepticism in human beings’ relations to each other and the world in which they live. For Cavell, Shakespeare’s tragedies are the most complete working out, in all its cunning subtleties and alluring perversities, of the sceptical alienation from the world and from the love of others. The sceptic – who can be anybody – demands certainty beyond the human capacity or condition to provide it. He thereby loses or rejects the world, which appears to lie beyond his fastidious requirement for absolute knowledge. (I use the masculine pronoun deliberately, for Cavell’s later essays suggests that scepti- cism may be gender specific.) Cavell argues, via Shakespeare’s tragedies, that scepticism with regard to our possible knowledge of objects in the world takes a peculiarly debilitating form when it inhabits human relationships.
