First came Aco's request to fire the starting gun at the 12th edition of the ARNO WALLAARD MEMORIAL. That's fun to do. Shortly afterwards, Frieda called me up to ask me whether I had made any progress writing the preface. I stopped for a moment because that request - and you can guess who should have made that - was unknown to me. I have been allowed to speak during this race for many years as Radio Tour and I can say: that is one of the most beautiful jobs in the jury. ARNO WALLAARD MEMORIAL; when I think of it, my thoughts are immediately divided into two pieces. On one hand the memory of Arno and on the other, the polder race through the Alblasserwaard with start and finish in Meerkerk. I have very nice memories of Arno as a rider. He had only just become an espoir and at around zero degrees celsius he became 6th in the elite Dokkumer Wouden Omloop as a youngster between all those older semi pros. Such incredible perseverance he showed that day. Another race, the Waterschapsronde, brings up vivid memories as well. There was a breakaway with the very experienced prize riders Jan and Godert de Leeuw. The bunch falling behind with the teammates of the de Leeuw-brothers disrupting every initiative to catch up with the leaders. Arno observed this for a while and then punched straight to the breakaway, much to the riders’ suprise: where that young man come from? They asked me if he had slipstreamed behind a car. But nothing was less true. With a nice overview along the canal I had observed this daring act and I liked what I saw. That he ended up almost winning the race is really just a side note. Sitting with Arno on a bench in the sun in Verviers before the start of the Queen stage of the Ster Elektro Tour. He had relaxed solving some sudoku’s the night before and he did not worry about the many hills that were served in Ardennes that day. "No, I'm not nervous because I’m developing decent climbing skills," Arno said with a smile that was so familiar to him. I will always remember Arno as a very nice person in and out of the race but also as a very talented and motivated rider. That memory never fades. I would much rather not have had a race with Arno as namesake. After all these years, the ambiguous feeling always lingers. But this is the hand we were dealt. So let’s take a look at the race that is called the ARNO WALLAARD MEMORIAL. A race started off by the crème de la crème of Dutch and foreign juniors. The breeding ground for young talent for our local cycling club, Jan van Arckel. Riders who have followed Arno’s lead. What about, for example, Fabio Jakobsen who recently won - in a way that Arno could have done - his first race with the pros. But of course the main course is the international UCI race for Elite men; put in place by a very close and competent organization committee who are helped by an army of volunteers. The organization has an ongoing aim to do better every year. They were the first to use a drone for the race report and in recent years everything could be followed live on the internet. This year, the broadcasts will also be available on TV and the race is part of the Holland cup. What a view, every year: the finish line in Meerkerk. I wish everyone nice weather and beautiful races at the traditional exciting local circuits with a lot of public and atmosphere.
