Foreword The Arno Wallaard Memorial is about to take place for the 13th time and has grown out to be an internationally renowned UCI 1.2 race. The strongest of Dutch teams take on some revered teams from outside of the Netherlands, and even regional riders get to join this battle through ‘wildcards’. With the Juniors race preceding the elite in the morning, even tomorrow’s champions get a chance to show their qualities to the public. This unique race through the Ablasserwaard’s green, flat Polder landscape is a yearly sportive highlight reel which keeps the memory of the late Arno Wallaard vivid and relevant. The race is organised yearly in loving memory of this very talented, intelligent and sympathetic cyclist, whom I had the honour to train in his formative years. From day one, we had a click and one victory piled on to the next success, Arno dreamed of getting a professional contract. He could fall back on total support from his enthusiastic parents Aco and Frieda, and his mutually talented sister and brother Jaccolien and Freek. Naturally, it is a great honour for me to be invited by the passionate organisation to write this foreword and be a guest on race day. I still proudly look back at Arno’s many great achievements. No less than 25 victories as a junior, followed by victories in well-known races as an espoir and elite rider – among others in his local Omloop van de Alblasserwaard (1999), the Dutch Nationals (2001) and the very difficult Ronde van Overijssel (2005). The reward was his big wish coming true! A contract at team Skil-Shimano which is now named Team Sunweb. A long cherished dream had become reality. Unfortunately, a genetically inherited heart malfunction ended this beloved rider’s career in the most gruesome way, right at the peak of his career. The Arno Wallaard Memorial, the Most Dutch Race of The Netherlands, is a marvellous monument in memory of a rider who will always have a place in my heart and who has claimed an eternal spot in my memories. I am highly pleased to know that the Wallaard family has stated a guarantee for this race in the next 10 years, both as sponsors and organisers. Arno has given us so many moments of beauty. And it is just great that this fantastic sports event exists to keep his memory alive. I wish the organisation, all volunteers, riders, teams and the public an unforgettable and successful day of cycling. It is with a loving smile that I think back to the brilliant talent that this day is named after. Fred Brand. - 3 - ARNO WALLAARD MEMORIAL 3.
