Mountains and Sky: Landscape Painting Course Start Date: 8/19/2019

Students may work in either oils or acrylics 1. Latex Gloves 2. 10-12 brushes have a variety of round, sable and flat in a range of sizes #10- #20 3. Gamsol / Galkyd (please do not bring linseed oil or turpentine) if using oil paint 4. A palette (Any is fine- Sam prefers hand held. Butcher's trays are nice and easy to clean) 5. paper towels / plastic wrap (for covering palette) 6. A palette knife (have extra in case the knife breaks) 7. A sealable solvent jar/ extra Jars for medium (Acrylic painters will need sealable containers for their paint) 8. artist tape 9. Drawing materials pencils/ink and/or charcoal (optional drawing materials: Sumi Ink, vine charcoal, pencils - 2B or Softer) 10. Painting surfaces: Students are welcome to bring whatever they like to paint on – paper; gesso-ed paper; unstretched, gesso-ed canvas; traditional stretched canvas. Please have at least 5 canvases, 3 smaller and 2 larger. A suggested variety of dimensions to work with are: 11” x 15” or 12” x 16” 18” x 24” and/or 20” x 24” Max size 22” x 30” (students are welcome to bring any size they like and gessoed paper or primed unstretched canvas is also an option (make sure you also have a proper surface to work on). If planning on taking advantage of afternoon sessions please have extra surfaces. We will make three one-day, morning paintings and one two day painting at the end of the week. Please have a larger canvas for that final painting. There will be optional time to work in the afternoon, please bring additional surfaces for that or the optional drawing materials. 11. Suggested colors: Flake White, Titanium White, Cadmium lemon yellow, Cad Yellow Med, Yellow Ochre, Cad Light, Cad Red Med, Venetian Red, Alizarin Crimson, , Blue or Maya Blue, , Chromium oxide, Mauve, Caput Mortem, Peach Black, Ivory Black, Lamp Black Please also bring: Hat, Sunscreen, Water, Snacks Sam recommends: M.Graham & Co., Holbein, RGH Artist's Oil Paints (available online) or Maimeri Classico Oil Paints- solid workhorse paints. Williamsburg and Micheal Harding are great paints. Buy large tubes of the whites (or pints), and probably the Earth - Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Black. Small tubes of cadmiums and synthetics will do.
