Parish Profile August 2019 In plurality with St. Edwin’s, High Coniscliffe and St. Mary’s, Piercebridge St. Edwin’s, High Coniscliffe All Saints’ Church, Blackwell St. Mary’s, Piercebridge Seeking to Grow God's Kingdom by growing the Church, growing as disciples and growing in service to the parish and beyond. 1 Dear Applicant, Welcome to our parish profile and thank you for taking the time to read it. Our aim is to give you a taste of our Christian Mission through an understanding of our two parishes and their churches. This parish profile brings together two individual yet adjoining parishes on the western fringe of Darlington. It covers the parishes of Blackwell, All Saints’ and Salutation and Coniscliffe, which comprises St Edwin’s and St Mary’s churches. The vacancy has arisen following the departure of our previous Vicar, David Railton, to a new post in the west of Scotland. We are now seeking to appoint a new Vicar to serve both parishes, the two benefices being held in plurality. Whilst each parish has its own individual characteristics, the congregations have much in common. Both have a commitment to the growth of the Church, their own growth as disciples and to service in their community. This commitment is demonstrated as a significant number of members of the combined congregations carry out some kind of voluntary work within their church, participate through the PCC committees and maintain their commitment to planned giving and stewardship. The parishes support a small number of part-time employees whose work underpins our mission to our local communities. -

LEXANDER FAIRWEATHER, at one time Merchant in Kirriemuir, afterwards resident at Newport, Dundee, about the year 1874, wrote this Memorandum, or History ; to which he proudly affixed the following lines : " Our name and ancestry renowned or no, Free from dishonour, 'tis our pride to show." As his memorandum exists only in manuscript, and so might easily be lost, I proprose to re-edit it for printing ; with such notes, and corrections as I can furnish. Mr. Fairweather had sound literary tastes, and was a keen archaeologist and genealogist ; upon which subjects he brought to bear a considerable amount of critical acumen. The deep interest he took in everything connected with his family and surname naturally endeared him to all his kin while, unfailing geniality and lively intelligence, made him a wide circle of attached friends, ! ; 6 I only met him once, when he visited Jersey in 1876 where I happened to be quartered, with the Royal Artillery, and where he sought me out. -

The articles were written to explain and to describe the origin and de\elopment of the Armorial Bearings of the ancient Dioceses of Scotland. These Coats of arms are, and have been more or less con- tinuously, used by the Scottish Episcopal Church since they came into use in the middle of the 17th century, though whether the disestablished Church has a right to their use or not is a vexed question. Fox-Davies holds that the Church of Ireland and the Episcopal Chuich in Scotland lost their diocesan Coats of Arms on disestablishment, and that the Welsh Church will suffer the same loss when the Disestablishment Act comes into operation ( Public Arms). -

The attribution to David I of the establishment of most of the Scottish episcopal sees has, if only through repetition, become a convention. Yet, while historians have bee generan ni l agreement about David's work, they have differed profoundly as to the details. A very recent writer has gone so far as to remark, "Before David's time St Andrews was the only bishopric Scotlann i d proper addedmorr e o h ; x esi probably eight." 1 Other modern historians have allowe r thredo thao e tw tsee s were founde e reigth nn i d of David's predecessor, Alexander I.2 The older historians and chroniclers were less confident about the extent of David's work. The Benefice Profile of Yarm with Kirklevington, Picton and Worsall St Mary Magdalene, Yarm Aerial photographs taken by Harry Brown All Saints, Worsall A message from the Rt Revd Paul Ferguson, Bishop of Whitby Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the post of Rector of Yarm with Kirklevington, Picton and Worsall. This post offers exciting possibilities for ministry in a varied town-and-country setting. As you will read in these pages, this is a benefice of two parishes comprising the market town of Yarm and a group of nearby villages. This relatively new grouping was formed under the leadership of the previous Rector, Canon John Ford, who was also Area Dean and who retired in 2020. The communities are conscious of their very long history — Yarm is an ancient fording place over the River Tees, and the villages have been the source of a wealth of Saxon and Anglo-Danish archaeology — but they are not in any sense locked into the past. Retail and education are key to their economy and culture; rural industry still has a significant part to play, and there is extensive new house-building and an increasing population. The new Rector will find a secure foundation to build on, willing and able lay leaders, and a shared commitment to worship well planned and led in a generally liberal Catholic style. Although there is mention in this profile of concern that congregations are ageing, in fact there is more involvement with families and younger people, and with external institutions, than would be found in many other places. -

Like other mosses, this wetland area supports a variety of plant and animal species, even though it has been subject to certain development and agricultural degradation pressures. For example, the Great Crested Newt was found here prior to the expansion of the town of Portlethen. Many acid loving vegetative species are found in Portlethen Moss, and the habitat is monitored by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. True heather, a common plant on the The Portlethen Moss is the location of considerable prehistoric, Portlethen Moss Middle Ages and seventeenth century history, largely due to a ridge through the bog which was the route of early travellers. By at least the Middle Ages this route was more formally constructed with raised stonework and called the Causey Mounth. Obviously only the outcrops and ridge areas would have been habitable, but the desirability of primitive habitation would have been enhanced by proximity to the sea and natural defensive protection of the moss to impede intruders. -
