PREFACE. This work has been undertaken with a twofold object. The first is to give a popular account of our useful Fishes to the colonists, together with all that relates to pisciculture and acclimatization, with a view to promote a development of our fish resources. To make it more useful in its educational character, a simple explanation of the science of the subject is prefixed. The second object is to give an account of our Fish and Fisheries, such as will be required for the great Fish Exhibition of 1883. With this view, all that relates to our laws, markets, and our fisheries generally is given. Finally, the work is meant to be simple and practical, so that not a word in it may be above the comprehension of those not specially trained to scientific phraseology. Though in places necessarily a little technical, it is hoped that on the whole it will be found readable, and sufficient to give to inquirers all the knowledge they require about the Fisheries of New South Wales. I take this opportunity of thanking the Hon. W. IMacleay, F.L.S., and Alex. Adipose.—Fatty matter throughout the tissue. Armature.—A prickle or bony point. Axil.—Literally the armpit ; the inner angle at the base of a fiu or spine. Basibranchials. —Small bones uniting the branchial arches below. Branchial.—Relating to the gill. BrancMsB.— Gills. Branchial arches.—Plates which bear the gills. In the Perch they are five, fouf bearing gills ; the fifth dwarfed, and bearing teeth called lower pharyngeal bone. The arches are divided into movable portions dilated and confluent above, beset with fine teeth, and called tlie upper pharyngeal bones. Branchiostegals.—The mai-gin of the gill-cover has a skinny fringe to close it more effectually ; this fringe is supported by one or many bony rays called branchiostegals. Bifurcated.—Forked. Bumbora.—A sunken rock or roef covered at low-water. Canines.—Larger projecting teeth like dog teeth. Ceratobranchials.—The middle segments of the branchial arches. Ccecal. —Blind, or closed sac, not perforate. Confluent,^When separate parts become united so as to lose their distinctness they are said to be confluent. Cran.—A barrel of herrings. Deciduous.—Easily falling away. Denticulate.—Finely toothed. Dun.—Broken dried cod-fish. Emarginate.—Notched or cut out at the edge. Epibranchials.—The upper segment of the branchial arch. Ethmoid.—A cartilage, thickest above the vomer, which extends as a narrow stripe along the bony partition between the eyes. The nerves of smell (olfactory) run along and through the Ethmoid. Falcate.—Crescent-shaped or bent like a reaping-hook. Filament.—A thread-like membrane. Finlets.— Small fins, such as those along the tail of the mackerel. FollicleS.^—Small leaf-like bags or cavities. Gibbous.— Swollen or humped at some part of the surface. Grilse.—Young salmon that have never spawned. Hill or To Hill.—Sand-heaps formed by Salmon for the ova. Hence the expres- sion " to hill," for spawning time. The sand-heap is also called a ridd. Humeral.—Belonging to the shoulder. Hyaline —An extremely clear, transparent membrane. Hyoid.—The arch which encloses the branchial apparatus, Hypobranchial.—The lowest segment of the branchial arch absent from the fourth arch. Imbricate,—Laid over each other like tiles. Incisors.—Front cutting-teeth in fishes. Kelt.—Salmon exhausted, and often covered with parasites after spawniug-time. c X GLOSSARY. Klipfish.—Dried cod. Lamellae.—Thin plates. Laminate.—Divided into thin plates. Lateral.—Pertaining to the side ; refers especially to the line along the sides of some fishes called the lateral line. Littoral.—Belonging to the shore. Maise or Maese.—A measure of 500 herrings. Maxillary-—The front margin of the upper jaw formed by the intermaxillary or premaxillary bone which in most fishes bears teeth. It is spread into a flat, triangular projection, on which leans the second bone of the upper jaw—the maxillary. Mesially.—Mesial ; a supposed divisional, perpendicular, longitudinal line, dividing the fish into two halves. MuciferOUS.—Mucous system, having special reference to tlie lateral line, the scales of which are perforated and exude an oily lubricating fluid. Nancy.—A trade term for 40 lobsters. Occiput.—The hinder part of the head or skull. OflEal.—Trade term for Haddock, Plaice, and Whiting. Olfactory. —Relating to the organs of smell. Operculum.—Gill-cover. socket. Orbit.—The eye , Osseous.—Bony tissue. Ossicles.—Small bones. Palatine.—Relating to the palate bones. The palate properly consists of three bones— 1. The Enteropterygoid, an oblong thin bone attached to the inner border of the palatine and pterygoid, and increasing the surface of the bony roof of the mouth. 2.

Head large, steep; deep mu- cous cavities on top of head separated by serrated crests; very large temporal and pre- opercular spines and smaller orbital (frontal) spine in juveniles of one species, all disap- pearing with age. Eyes smaller than snout length in adults (but larger than snout length in juveniles). Mouth very large, jaws extending far behind eye in adults; one supramaxilla. Teeth as large fangs in pre- maxilla and dentary; vomer and palatine toothless. Gill rakers as gill teeth in adults (elongate, lath-like in juveniles). No fin spines; dorsal fin long based, roughly in middle of body, with 16 to 20 rays; anal fin short-based, far posterior, with 7 to 9 rays; pelvic fin abdominal in juveniles, becoming subthoracic with age, with 7 rays; pectoral fin with 13 to 16 rays. Scales small, non-overlap- ping, spinose, cup-shaped in adults; lateral line an open groove partly covered by scales. No light organs. Total vertebrae 25 to 28. Colour: brown-black in adults. Habitat, biology, and fisheries: Meso- and bathypelagic. Distinctive caulolepis juvenile stage, with greatly enlarged head spines in one species. Feeding mode as carnivores on crustaceans as juveniles and on fishes as adults. Rare deepsea fishes of no commercial importance. Remarks: One genus with 2 species throughout the world ocean in tropical and temperate latitudes. The family was revised by Kotlyar (1986). Similar families occurring in the area Diretmidae: No fangs, jaw teeth small, in bands; anal fin with 18 to 24 rays.

    Monitoring the Ecosystem Health of Estuaries on the NSW South Coast D Wiecek 1, R Laine 1, M Edmonds 2, and S Pickering 3 1 NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Wollongong, NSW 2 Eurobodalla Shire Council, NSW 3 Shoalhaven City Council, NSW Abstract Working with Councils to gain an improved understanding of the ecosystem health of estuaries is a key objective of the NSW Government Estuary Management Program, administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). A well designed monitoring program can provide this understanding. Over the past few years both Shoalhaven City and Eurobodalla Shire Councils have embarked on additional estuary monitoring to enable them to provide baseline information on the ecosystem health of their respective estuaries. This information will also be used to help evaluate and report on the implementation of their estuary management plans (now termed coastal zone management plans), as well as inform ongoing management directions. Shoalhaven City and Eurobodalla Shire Councils’ estuary monitoring programs have historically centred on pressure indicators such as nutrients and/or bacterial sampling. Although very useful in monitoring pollution sources and recreational swimming quality, this has not provided Council with information sufficient to determine whether estuary ecosystem health is declining, being maintained or improving through initiatives such as implementation of estuary management plans. Both Councils recognised the need to modify their existing programs to fill this information gap in a scientifically robust and consistent manner. They now have two years of monitoring completed broadly in line with the monitoring and reporting protocols of the NSW Government Natural Resources Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation (MER) Program (estuary theme).

    MEDIA RELEASE 21 December 2012 The Tuross River Story Bodalla Public School (BPS) students with parents, grandparents, carers, family members and guests recently celebrated the official launch of Ngadjung gadhu-ya (Fresh water to salt water) – A Tuross River Story. Earlier this year 26 BPS students from years 5 and 6 participated in a research excursion organised by Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) as part of an education program to assist children to learn more about local catchments – plants, animals, Aboriginal culture and heritage, industries and history. Southern Rivers CMA catchment officer, Karen Lee said the children worked as a team during the last term to produce the book about the Tuross River and surrounding catchment which is written in English and the local Aboriginal Dhurga language. “The children put an enormous amount of effort into researching and writing the book which demonstrates their appreciation and sense of stewardship of the catchment. They wrote about the importance of protecting this precious resource and maintaining the Indigenous culture associated with it. “The Tuross River Story starts high in the Kybeyan, near Cooma and finishes with the River’s journey at Tuross Head on the coast.” The school was presented with an award at the book launch from the office of the Member for Bega, Andrew Constance MP for its participation in the project. Principal, Therese Aston said the book’s production was a valuable and enriching experience for the students. “Since becoming involved in the book initiative the school will now include in its curriculum more Aboriginal culture and heritage activities and excursions.

THE accompanying paper embodies the results of the investigation into the food of trout in New South Wales carried out during the season 1935-1936, and gives details of the stomach contents of 108 Rainbow Trout (Salmo irideus Gibbons) and 72 Brown Trout (Salmo tario Linnams). The information obtained in the course of the season's work forms a valuable addition to our knowledge of the varied forms of life which constitute the diet of the fish in those inland waters from which it was possible to obtain material for examination. Members of the Rod Fishers' Society of New South Wales again ably assisted in securing and submitting stomachs from the fish caught, and by their encouragement and co-operation have rendered the investigation possible. It is, however, somewhat disappointing that so few streams are represented, in spite of repeated requests for material from new localities, especially as the information which could have been obtained from such sources would have been of undoubted value in estimating the relative suitability of these waters for future liberation of fry.
