It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.1 Overview So spoke Crowfoot, orator of the Blackfoot Confederacy in 1890, above, on his deathbed. Even while this was not identified as poetry at the time, much of the wisdom of this Native American speaker comes across to readers poetically. Similarly, much of the poetry of Native American poets can be read simply as wisdom. Though there was a significant number of tribes, and a tremendous number of people at the time of the European invasion, each tribal language displays simultaneously a distinct identity as well as a variety of individual voices. However, the published poetry from native authors across the vast spectrum of tribal affiliations between the beginning and end of the 20th century reveal three unifying themes: (1) respecting a common reverence for the land from which each tribe came, through ceremonial poetry and songs; (2) respecting past traditions, including rituals, truths, and the words of one’s elders; and (3) expressing political criticism, even activism. Editor Kenneth Rosen writes “There may seem to be a great deal of distance between the Navajo Blessing Way chants and a contemporary poem about the confrontations at Wounded Knee, but it’s really not that far to go”.2 In fact, this curriculum unit around Native American poetry endeavors to keep pace with the ongoing experiences of native people, whose words continue to speak to the land, its mysteries, and its voice. -

SONOMA COUNTY LITERARY UPDATE March 1, 2012 The Spoken Art of Poetry This semester in the Monday-Friday prosody workshops at the Sitting Room, we have been reading Amy Lowell, e.e. cummings, Phil Levine, and Jorie Graham. I scoured the Internet for downloadable recordings of poems in the voice of each poet. Ironically, the only poet among these four who was never recorded was Amy Lowell—ironic because she was a jubilant proponent of the oral performance of poems and the musical/emotional breath in words off the page. In her essay “Poetry as a Spoken Art,” Lowell wrote, “Poetry is as much an art to be heard as is music, if we could only get people to understand the fact. To read it off the printed pages without pronouncing it is to get only a portion of its beauty. Poetry will come into its Paradise when carefully trained speakers make a business of interpreting it to the word.” Poetry Out Loud How fortunate for us in Sonoma County that we have so many readers and writers who believe in the spoken art of poetry. On Sunday, February 12, at the Glaser Center in Santa Rosa, we were treated to fourteen young performers presenting twenty-seven poems from memory as part of Sonoma County’s Poetry Out Loud annual high school competition. For those of you who weren’t there, I can assure you, the oral life of poetry is alive and well. This year’s winner was Brynna Thigpen of Maria Carrillo High School performing "The Room" by Conrad Aiken and "Childhood's Retreat," by Robert Duncan. -

Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

The Little Magazine in America, mid-1950s to mid-1980s: A Collection from the Golden Age of the Small Press Mimeo Revolution We are pleased to offer for sale an extraordinary collection of little magazines from the golden age of the small press mimeo revolution. The collection documents, with great breadth and depth, the intellectual, spiritual, and material diversity of poet-driven publishing in the US and, to a lesser extent, Canada and the UK from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. Keith and Rosmarie Waldrop review page proofs at Burning Deck Press (Providence Journal, 1980s). The present collection has emerged in tandem with our ongoing projects to chronicle and archive the proliferation of avant-garde underground small press publications, including the acclaimed New York Public Library exhibition and book A Secret Location on the Lower East Side, curated and written by Steve Clay and Rodney Phillips, as well as our new expanded resource website, From a Secret Location, launched in January 2017 by Granary Books. The collection includes a strong representation of seminal works from various movements and groupings such as the New York School, British Poetry Revival, Beats, Black Mountain, San Francisco Renaissance, Ethnopoetics, Black Arts, Venice West, Meat poets, Wichita Vortex, and Language poets. Concrete and visual poetry is also well represented. One of the chief strengths of the collection is its range of inclusivity, which reveals an international network of poet-driven and -distributed publications that developed into a vast underground economy, from Vancouver to Cardiff and Bolinas to Buffalo, with hundreds of stops in between. -

This year, the program offers mentorships in the genres ofpoetry , fiction, creative nonfiction/memoir, and spoken word. The aim of the mentorship program is not formalized instruction, but rather an individualized, flexible, and often informal correspondence. Poetry and spoken word mentorship students will share work with mentors and peers on a weekly basis, while fiction and creative nonfiction students will share work with mentors and peers on a biweekly basis. The 2021 Adroit Journal Summer Mentorship Program will begin on June ABOUT THE 21st and will conclude on August 2nd. Applications for the 2021 Adroit Journal Summer Mentorship Program will be open via our Submittable server from February 22, 2021 until March 22, 2021 at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST). We are very proud of our alumni. Students have subsequently been recognized through the National YoungArts Foundation & United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts designation, the National Scholastic Art PROGRAM & Writing Awards, and the Foyle Young Poet of the Year Awards, among a plethora of other recognition avenues.
