Fraser, created a vacancy in the membership of the Legislative Assembly. On Wednesday, August 23, 1989, a Writ of Election was issued by the Chief Electoral Officer to Robert Court, Returning Officer for Cariboo. The Writ ordered that an Election be held in the electoral district ofCariboo on September 20, 1989. September 7th was designated as the day for the nomination of candidates. Early voting in the office of the Returning Officer commenced on September 8 and four days of advance polling began on September 13, 1989. Two registration periods were available to unregistered voters to allow them to have their names added to the voters list during the 29 day interval. These periods were August 23 - September 1, and September 11 - 16, inclusive. The voters list closed with 33,963 names, including 401 Section 80 registrations compared to 2,104 Section 80s at the 1986 general election. The official results were announced by the Returning Officer on October 2, 1989. 25,349 of the 33,963 registered voters (74.64%) exercised their franchise. Mr. David Zirnhelt, endorsed by the New Democratic Party, was declared duly elected as the second member to represent the Cariboo Electoral District. On receipt of the Writ of Election and the Certificate of Election from the Returning Officer on Return Day, October 6, 1989, the Chief Electoral Officer confirmed to the Deputy Provincial Secretary the election of . Mr. Zirnhelt to the Provincial Legislature. Oak Bay-Gordon Head Electoral District The November 15, 1989, resignation of Brian Smith, the member for the electoral district of Oak Bay-Gordon Head, created a vacancy in the membership of the Legislative Assembly. A Writ ofElection was issued that day by the Chief Electoral Officer to Joan Giles, Returning Officer for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. The Writ ordered that an Election be held in the electoral district of Oak Bay-Gordon Head on December 13, 1989. November 30 was designated as the day for the nomination of candidates. Early voting in the office of the Returning Officer commenced on December land four days of advance polling began on December 6, 1989. The official results were announced by the Returning Officer on December 18, 1989. 24,118 ofthe 32,351 registered voters (74.55%) exercised their franchise. Ms. Elizabeth Cull, endorsed by the New Democratic Party, was declared duly elected as the member to represent the Oak Bay-Gordon Head Electoral District.
