  • Squamate Reptiles Challenge Paradigms of Genomic Repeat Element Evolution Set by Birds and Mammals
ARTICLE DOI: 10.1038/s41467-018-05279-1 OPEN Squamate reptiles challenge paradigms of genomic repeat element evolution set by birds and mammals Giulia I.M. Pasquesi1, Richard H. Adams1, Daren C. Card 1, Drew R. Schield1, Andrew B. Corbin1, Blair W. Perry1, Jacobo Reyes-Velasco1,2, Robert P. Ruggiero2, Michael W. Vandewege3, Jonathan A. Shortt4 & Todd A. Castoe1 1234567890():,; Broad paradigms of vertebrate genomic repeat element evolution have been largely shaped by analyses of mammalian and avian genomes. Here, based on analyses of genomes sequenced from over 60 squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes), we show that patterns of genomic repeat landscape evolution in squamates challenge such paradigms. Despite low variance in genome size, squamate genomes exhibit surprisingly high variation among spe- cies in abundance (ca. 25–73% of the genome) and composition of identifiable repeat ele- ments. We also demonstrate that snake genomes have experienced microsatellite seeding by transposable elements at a scale unparalleled among eukaryotes, leading to some snake genomes containing the highest microsatellite content of any known eukaryote. Our analyses of transposable element evolution across squamates also suggest that lineage-specific var- iation in mechanisms of transposable element activity and silencing, rather than variation in species-specific demography, may play a dominant role in driving variation in repeat element landscapes across squamate phylogeny. 1 Department of Biology, University of Texas at Arlington, 501S. Indonesia is considered one of the megadiversity centers, both in terms of species numbers as well as endemism. According to the Biodiversity Action Plan for Indonesia, 16% of all amphibian and reptile species occur in Indonesia, a total of over 1,100 species. New research activities, launched in the last few years, indicate that these figures may be significantly higher than generally assumed. Indonesia is suspected to host the worldwide highest numbers of amphibian and reptiles species.

Updated Checklist of Indian Reptiles R. Aengals, V.M. Sathish Kumar & Muhamed Jafer Palot* Southern Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India, Chennai-600 028 *Western Ghat Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India, Calicut-673 006 Corresponding author: [email protected] INTRODUCTION Reptiles are cold-blooded animals found in almost all the parts of the world, except the very cold regions. In India, all the three living orders of reptiles have their representatives - Crocodylia (crocodiles), Testudines (turtles and tortoises) and Squamata (lizards and snakes). The diversified climate, varying vegetation and different types of soil in the country form a wide range of biotopes that support a highly diversified reptilian fauna. The Western Ghats, Eastern Himalaya, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are endowed with varied and unique reptilian fauna. The monumental works on Indian reptiles are, ‘The Reptiles of British India’ by Gunther (1864), ‘Fauna of British India - ‘Reptilia and Batrachia’ by Boulenger (1890) and Smith (1931, 1935, 1943). The work of Smith stood the test of time and forms the standard work on the subject. Key words: Amphibian, reptile, species richness, Gunung Halimun National Park. • Model of Microclimatic Influence on Fluctuation of Herpetofauna Diversity in Campus Area
VOLUME 4 No. 2, 22 Juni 2015 Halaman 101-198 MODEL OF MICROCLIMATIC INFLUENCE ON FLUCTUATION OF HERPETOFAUNA DIVERSITY IN CAMPUS AREA Tony F. Qurniawan Faculty of Biology Universitas Gadjah Mada Email: [email protected] ABSTRAK Studi tentang hubungan akibat perubahan iklim mikro terhadap fluktuasi keanekaragaman herpetofauna di area kampus dilakukan selama enam tahun terakhir. Kata Kunci: Monitoring; Reptil; Amphibia; Pemodelan path; PLS ABSTRACT The study on correlation of microclimates changes on fluctuations of herpetofauna diversity in campus area was done for the last six years. Monitoring herpetofauna diversity was conducted from 2007 to 2012 using Visual Encounter Survey. The analysis for designing a model on the influence of microclimates on fluctuations of herpetofauna diversity performed by using smart PLS program. The result showed eight (8) species of amphibians and twenty four (24) species of reptiles were identified within the last six-year visits (2007-2012). New country records of Lepidodactylus cf lugubris (Geckonidae) species were documented.
