The information shared by these imperial dragon robes are discussed through a cultural and technological analysis of the symbolic motifs and fabric structures of these garments to reveal the cultural and social impact of yin-yang on Qing imperial costume design. Keywords: Dragon robe, Yin and Yang, imperial/court costume Introduction Since the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the yin-yang philosophy has been utilized in Chinese court dress (Lin, 2015). The influence of yin-yang on Chinese costume design can be observed in the surviving artifacts of the Qing dynasty (Cheng, 2008; Camman, 1952). The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Costume Collection (UHMCC) houses three kosse robes (i.e., tapestry) and one embroidery dragon robes from the Qing dynasty which provide representations of the yin-yang philosophy through the motifs and color patterns of its design. These important robes were selected to exhibit during special days such as year of dragon, UHM 100 years, and UHMCC 50 year’s anniversary. There are four categories of court dress: gunfu, chaofu, jifu, changfu (Zhoa, 1989; Zhou & Gao, 1988). Three dragon robes from the UHM Costume Collection are classified as jifu, or semi-formal court robe (Vollmer, 1977a). -
Identification of Asian Garments in Small Museums

Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Elaine Pedersen The frequent misidentification ofAsian garments in small museum collections indicated the need for a garment identification system specifically for use in differentiating the various forms ofAsian clothing. The decision tree system proposed in this thesis is intended to provide an instrument to distinguish the clothing styles ofJapan, China, Korea, Tibet, and northern Nepal which are found most frequently in museum clothing collections. The first step ofthe decision tree uses the shape ofthe neckline to distinguish the garment's country oforigin. The second step ofthe decision tree uses the sleeve shape to determine factors such as the gender and marital status ofthe wearer, and the formality level ofthe garment. The decision tree instrument was tested with a sample population of 10 undergraduates representing volunteer docents and 4 graduate students representing curators ofa small museum. The subjects were asked to determine the country oforigin, the original wearer's gender and marital status, and the garment's formality and function, as appropriate. The test was successful in identifying the country oforigin ofall 12 Asian garments and had less successful results for the remaining variables. Copyright by Alison E. The concept of Hanfu is distinguished from the broader concept of traditional Chinese clothing. The ancient Chinese called Hanfu as Yiguan. As the ancient Hu people’s traditional costume to be known as "Hufu", the Han Chinese traditional dress is referred to as "Hanfu". The succession of Hanfu elements in fashion is called as the fashion localization with Hanfu elements, also known as modern Han-style fashion. -

The Blooming of Parody in Edo Culture Yasunori Kojima
Laughter Connects the Sacred and the Sexual: The Blooming of Parody in Edo Culture Yasunori Kojima (ICU) 1. Introduction This paper takes a look at the full bloom of parody in Edo culture, especially with respect to laughter, which, I believe, serves as a connection between the sacred and the sexual. Historians tend to follow the golden rule: erase yourself and let the documents speak for themselves. So, in a similar manner, I am letting parody speak for itself. Therefore, this paper does not seek to analyze; rather it merely introduces several examples of parody. Nonetheless, these examples speak eloquently on how people during the Edo period enjoyed an immensely rich and playful culture of parody. As an icebreaker, I begin by introducing a comic book by Ishii Hisaichi, titled Gendai shisô no sonansha-tachi (The Shipwrecked Modern Philosophers). This is an excellent work of parody based on the series Gendai shisô no bôkensha-tachi (The Adventurous Modern Philosophers) published by Kodansha, an introductory series focusing on 34 prominent philosophers (Wittgenstein, Kuhn, Whitehead, Benjamin, Bataille, Barthes, Gadamer, Lacan, Foucault, Arendt, and Derrida among others). The point of this parody is that it took philosophy as its target, instead of politics or literature. The essence of often-abstruse modern philosophy is not only compressed within the four boxes of each comic strip, but is titillated, mocked, and even made the subject of laughter. Of course, the basic thought of each philosopher is outlined next to the comic strip; the gags would not make much sense if the reader were totally lacking knowledge about philosophy. -

Abstract. Guai imagery has played a significant role in the definition and development of traditional Chinese visual culture. Throughout history, guai visual products reflected national values, aesthetic appreciation and philosophical aspirations. This research examines the dynastic guai imagery formally and symbolically in the Chinese aesthetic and cultural context. It provides a contribution to the understanding of the inherent values of guai and how the reinterpretation of guai imagery that reflects political, social and cultural values in Chinese visual art. Introduction Guai (怪) in Chinese means literally strange or odd and it is also used to describe monsters or demons. In the early Chinese classical literature, guai referred to unusual or strange phenomena and things [1]. As noted by Li Jianguo, in his research on guai in literature before the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), the meaning of guai had gradually changed since the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE). Li refers to plant, animal or inanimate guai, with visible and fixed images [2]. Japanese scholar Miyoko Nakano, who specialises in Chinese classical literature and Chinese mythology, also confirms that Chinese guai have specific images beyond realistic forms [3]. Here, guai is used to define visual beings originally transformed from images of animals, plants or inorganic objects, rather than from human beings. -
