Is there any area of the mind which is really free from the known? Is there any part of the brain which is not cultivated by thought? If we do not find it, then we will always live in the field of the known, from which thought arises, which is matter. JKrishnamurtiatSaanen, . 21stJuly1974 IS THERE AN AREA IN THE BRAIN WHICH IS NOT CONTAMINATED BY THOUGHT ? Wehavebeentalkingovertogetherthematerialisticattitude towardslife.Theword materialism meanshavingvalues, opinions, judgementsbasedonthethoughtthatthereisnothing elsebutthemovementandmodificationofmatter, including consciousnessandwill.Thatisgenerallyacceptedasthe meaningofmaterialism. Philosophy reallymeanstheloveof life, ortheloveoftruthwhichdoesnotmeanideals, suppositions, theoriesandsystemswhichhavebeeninvented, conceived, orformulated.Butmostpeopleintheworldhave beenconditioned, shapedbyreligious, economicorsocial "philosophies",whichhavenevertackled, inquiredintoorcome togripswiththewholestructureofthemind.Themindhasbuilt theegocentricactivity.Egotismhasbeenoneofthemajor factorsinourlife, probablytheonlyfactor, andhumanbeings havenevercometotherealityofit.Wehaveaccepteditas inevitable, asnatural. Personally, wehavebeenconcernedtoseewhetherthe"me",the ego, thewholesubtlestructureofit, canbeutterlydissolvedand yetliveinthissociety.Canweunderstandthis, nottheoretically, notinaromanticidentificationwithsomethinggreater, but actually, andbefreeofthisegocentricactionanditsdemands, its pursuits, itsattachments?Idonotknowifyouhavegoneintoit.
