Sayyiduna ‘ Ibn Abi Taalib (Allah be pleased with him)

Sayyiduna Ali Ibn Abi Taalib was from the foremost of people to enter into the folds of . The scholars have differed in relation to his age at the time when our Master announced Prophethood and he became one of the first of those who accepted the call of the best of all creation (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Some have stated that Sayyiduna ‘Ali was ten years old whilst others have stated nine years old and some have stated that his age was eight years when he entered into the folds of Islam. There have been statements mentioning his age to be below eight as well.1

Al Imam As Suyuti (Allah shower mercy upon him) described Sayyiduna 'Ali Ibn Abi Taalib as having the following attributes; "One of those guaranteed Jannah, the brother of Allah's Messenger as established in the brotherhood, the son in law of Allah's Beloved as the husband of the leader of all believing women, Sayyidah Az Zahraa, one of the foremost of the , one of the sacred scholars, one of the brave people, the pious leaders, the great orators and one of those who gathered the Qur'an.2

Sayyiduna ‘Ali was nurtured by the best of all creation (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and thus was preserved from the diseases of the ignorant society around him. He never worshipped idols.3 His mother, Sayyidah Fatimah Bint Asad (Allah be pleased with her), entered into the folds of Islam and migrated to Al Madinah Al Munawwarah where she passed away during the time of the worldly life of our Master (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

When the Final Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) migrated to Al Madinah Al Munawwarah, he commanded Sayyiduna ‘Ali to remain in Makkah Al Mukarramah for a few days to fulfil the trusts that were left with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by the people of Makkah Al Mukarramah.

/AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com Sayyiduna ‘Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (Allah be pleased with him) participated in all the battles of Islam with great passion and bravery. One of the battles that is particularly a manifestation of his strength and bravery is the Conquest of Khaybar. It is narrated in Al Bukhari by Salamah (Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali was delayed whilst following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) due to an ailment in his eye. Sayyiduna Ali eventually reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). During the night, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “A man will take the flag tomorrow who is beloved to Allah and His Messenger. He will be victorious.” Burdah (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that all of the Companions were wishing that they be blessed with this honour. Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called Sayyiduna ‘Ali who was suffering due to an ailment in his eye. In a narration of Sahih Muslim from Sayyiduna Salamah it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent him to Sayyiduna ‘Ali. Sayyiduna Salamah says he brought Sayyiduna ‘Ali (Allah enlighten his noble countenance) into the blessed presence of Allah’s Messenger with an ailing eye. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his blessed saliva on the eye and it was cured. In the narration of Al Bukhari it is stated that the Messenger of Allah placed his blessed saliva on Sayyiduna Ali’s eyes and supplicated for him. Sayyiduna ‘Ali was cured and it was as though he had never been afflicted.

Jabir Ibn ‘AbdIllah (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna ‘Ali carried the gate to the fort of Khaybar on his back alone on the day of Khaybar and thereafter the Companions rose upon the fort and conquered Khaybar. The gate could not usually be carried unless there were forty men holding it.

At Tirmidhi narrates from Zayd Ibn Arqam that the Messenger of Allah said, “Ali is the patron of whomsoever I am the patron of.”

At Tirmidhi narrates from Sayyiduna ‘AbdUllah Ibn ‘Omar (Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna ‘Ali came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with tears flowing from his eyes when the Messenger of Allah had established brotherhood between the Companions. Sayyiduna ‘Ali said, “O Messenger of Allah! You have established brotherhood between your Companions and you did not establish brotherhood between me and anyone else.” The Messenger of Allah said, “You are my brother in the world and the hereafter.”

Love for Sayyiduna Ali is a sign of faith. Sayyiduna Ali (Allah enlighten his noble countenance) said, “By the One Who split the seed and Who created the souls, indeed the Prophet who was not taught by

/AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com anyone from the creation promised me that no one will love me but the believer and no one will have hatred for me except the hypocrite.”4 Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Al Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) said, “We used to recognise the hypocrites through their hatred for ‘Ali.”5

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (Allah enlighten his noble countenance) stated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent him to , Sayyiduna ‘Ali said, “O Messenger of Allah! You have sent me but I am a young man. I will be making judgments between them whilst not knowing what judgments are.” Sayyiduna ‘Ali states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his blessed hand on the chest of Sayyiduna ‘Ali and he supplicated, “O Allah! Guide his heart and make his tongue steadfast.”

On 17th Ramadhan 40AH, Sayyiduna Ali (Allah enlighten his noble countenance) was martyred by a slave called Ibn Muljim who attacked Sayyiduna ‘Ali with a sword at the time of Salaat-ul-Fajr.
