Sounds of War and Peace: Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945
10 This book vividly evokes for the reader the sound world of a number of Eu- Renata Tańczuk / Sławomir Wieczorek (eds.) ropean cities in the last year of the Second World War. It allows the reader to “hear” elements of the soundscapes of Amsterdam, Dortmund, Lwów/Lviv, Warsaw and Breslau/Wrocław that are bound up with the traumatising experi- ences of violence, threats and death. Exploiting to the full methodologies and research tools developed in the fields of sound and soundscape studies, the Sounds of War and Peace authors analyse their reflections on autobiographical texts and art. The studies demonstrate the role urban sounds played in the inhabitants’ forging a sense of 1945 Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945 identity as they adapted to new living conditions. Ossolińskich i jego zbiory w latach 1817‒1939 Abstrakt: Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest ukazanie dziejów i zbiorów Zakładu Narodowego im. Ossolińskich w latach 1817‒1939. Za pomocą analizy zachowanych dokumentów oraz istniejącej literatury przedmiotu starano się nie tylko ukazać hi- storię instytucji, wybrane kolekcje z zasobów biblioteki, ale także przedstawić jej organizację oraz ludzi, którzy na przestrzeni przeszło 120 lat przewinęli się przez jej mury. Jest to tym ważniejsze, że w przeciwieństwie do wielu innych polskich bibliotek nigdy nie napisano całościowej historii Ossolineum. Przyczyną tej sytuacji było to, że po 1945 r. niemal wszystkie archiwalia mogące służyć poznaniu dziejów Zakładu pozostały we Lwowie, zaś dostęp do nich był dla polskich badaczy bar- dzo utrudniony, a czasami nawet wręcz niemożliwy. Sytuacja ta zaczęła się powoli zmieniać po 1989 r. Wtedy też powstały mniejsze lub większe prace przyczynkarskie dotyczące dziejów Ossolineum. Dopiero od niedawna na rynku księgarskim zaczęły się pojawiać szersze publikacje ukazujące różne aspekty funkcjonowania Zakładu Narodowego im. Ossolińskich. Zgodnie z zamierzeniami fundatora instytucja ta zło- żona z biblioteki, wydawnictwa oraz muzeum miała nie tylko gromadzić różnego rodzaju druki, rękopisy, dzieła sztuki, ale także udostępniać swoje zbiory wszystkim zainteresowanym. Data początkowa artykułu wyznaczona została przez powołanie Zakładu, do którego doszło w 1817 r. -

Dining in Warsaw — Hints for ETAPS 2003 Participants — Andrzej TARLECKI The ETAPS Team Institute of Informatics Warsaw University, Poland. Foreword About the only complaint on ETAPS’02 in Grenoble I heard concerned the fact that no list of restaurants was readily available. Since this was considered a defect in France, I realised immediately that this might be even more of a problem in Poland. So, one of the first resolutions of the ETAPS’03 team was that a list of Warsaw restaurants must be made available for participants. Indeed, you will find more than one such list among the tourist material provided. I looked at them though and realised that they all are so dry: I wouldn’t be able to make up my mind where to go for dinner on this basis. Hence, additionally stimulated by an old, classical paper by Fernando Orejas written I believe for ICALP’83 in Barcelona (once ETAPS’03 is over, you should really look forward to ETAPS’04!), I decided to try to write down at least a few random hints to help. I must admit that I have no good idea how to start, or how to organise whatever I might be able to suggest. I guess I will try to first hint on typical Polish dishes you might encounter in a restaurant menu. Here, the order is pretty obvious: starters, soups, main course, desserts. Then I will try to list some Warsaw restaurants that might be worth thinking about. Basically, the list will be arranged by moving from one area to another, with an occasional insert on some specific motif. -

Krzysztof Skiba Cultural Studies Specialization: Theatre Index nr 58490/S Happenings by the Orange Alternative An attempt to document the actions I dedicate this work to the Citizen Militia (MO) without participation of which, the Orange Alternative's happenings would not achieve the presented scope Master thesis written under supervision of Dr Sławomir Świontek, Institute of Theory of Film and Theatre Literature at the University of Łódź Chapter 1 ROOTS OF THE ORANGE ALTERNATIVE 1 The roots of the Orange Alternative reach to the year 1980 in which the Movement for New Culture [Ruch Nowej Kultury] was formed in the academic circles of Wrocław. The movers and shakers of the movement were two students of Wrocław's colleges: the University of Wrocław and the State Higher School of Plastic Arts [Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Sztuk Plastycznych]. Actions undertaken by the Movement for New Culture took a form of public happenings and, according to their organizers, were “an attempt to surmount a man's isolation in the industrial world”. 1 The action initiating the Movement's presence took place in the streets of Wrocław's Old Town in October 1980. The Movement's sympathizers organized a march-demonstration under a slogan “Away with symmetry, long live free imagination”. During the following action “Flower for a militiaman” 2 buckets of flowers were handed out to police patrols. In April 1981 the Movement for New Culture along with the Independent Student Union (Niezależny Związek Studentów or NZS], inspired by similar Easter marches taking place in Western Europe, undertook to organize a “Peace March”. However the march finally did not take place. -
