Affiliated with: National Association. • Calif. Rifle & Pistol Association. • California Outdoor Heritage Alliance Single Shooting Society • San Diego Wildlife Federation & The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Civilian Marksmanship Program • National Shooting Sports Foundation MEETINGS Board Meeting 1st Thursday 6:30 PM - Meeting Hall From the President’s Point of View General Meeting 2nd Thursday Election Time Save the Date May 9th, 2019 7:15 PM Meeting Hall I’m guessing we have a fairly conservative membership here. Most of us wouldn’t think of not voting, even in California, our state of losing battles. I would like to see OFFICERS that attitude extend to our Association’s elections. At the general meeting on May 9th, President - Norm Porst, LM 2019 we will have final nominations and then be voting on the 2019 -2020 positions 760.271.8016 of President, Vice-President, Secretary and four Board of Directors. Directors must [email protected] be members in good standing and an NRA member for one year prior to nomination. Vice President - Darrin Eaton,LM Officers must have the same with the addition of serving at least one full term as an 760.630.8339 officer or director. My best advice to potential nominees is this: if you can’t look at a [email protected] good friend and tell him / her “no,” then you probably shouldn’t run. Your board makes decisions based on the , what’s best for the largest part of our membership, and Recording Secretary - Geoff Orchin LM 760.741.3721 long-term survival of our range. Sometimes hard decisions must be made. [email protected] For those who follow my monthly ‘Point of View’ you will have seen the statement “We DIRECTORS Are One Association.” The meaning of this is simple. We are not Escondido Rifle and Yosi Boublil 760.214.3582 other stuff, Escondido Trap and other stuff, Escondido Pistol and other stuff, etc. You Chris Cote 847.224.6898 get the idea. We ARE One Association. Even if your preferred enjoyment is throwing Ren Everett LM 760.432.2089 hatchets at bamboo targets, we all need to be involved to keep this top notch, fantastic, Linda Linaker LM 760.638.0573 Association alive and well. This starts with large turn-outs at events like the clean-up Mike Marks PP LM 760.744.7784 (last one over a hundred folks, wow) and voting in the elections. When you don’t show Ed Migdal LM 760.598.0093 up you allow small groups to dictate how your Association runs. Patrick Russ LM 760.644.2751 Chief Range Officer Since being elected I have tried to introduce myself to as many members as I could. I Jay Zimmett LM - 858.735.2354 have stopped by the different ranges to ask how we are doing and what could be done [email protected] better. I appreciate the feedback and use this information in my board discussions. I Assistant Chief Range Officer feel most of our members are pleased with the way the Association is run. The best way Mark Baldwin - 760-715-1871 to know is to see how people vote. But, I will be the first to say if you are not happy, [email protected] vote the bums out, including me.

2416 Grounds & Maintenance Here is my request. I would like to see a record turnout at this election. Be that person Pete Olson 760-518-9855 who cares enough to show up and vote. Will it be crowded? I hope so. Will it take Treasurer longer than normal? Probably. Will you see someone and say I didn’t know you were a Lucy Nelson LM - 760.533.3771 member? Yes. I don’t ask for much (ok, I do), so please come out and vote on May 9th, [email protected] just don’t forget your membership card. You will need it to vote. But 16525 Guejito Rd. • Escondido, CA 92027 since it’s in my ‘Point of View’ it means it’s really important! I Multiple Work Parties Our last work party (3/31/2019) was a great success. It was postponed from the original date due to road closures from the rain in February. Because of the date change, we were concerned that we would have low attendance. We had nothing to worry about. We had 107 people show up and pitch in on the numerous projects that needed to be done. Their names are listed on page 12 of this newsletter. Our next work party is going to be on 5/18/2019. Besides cleaning the Trap Ranges we will have a lot of tasks that need to be done for two big reasons:

The Annual Barbecue – The day after the work party we will have our annual barbecue. A lot of effort goes into getting ready for this fantastic event. We need to get the grounds and facilities ready for a few hundred members and guests so that we can concentrate on the fun and food rather than more tasks that need to be done the next day.

Fire Prevention – This year we have had an unusually wet winter so the weeds and grass are growing thicker and faster than other years. By clearing brush and cutting down the weeds, we will reduce the fuel for brushfires. Come join us for a day of service, fellowship, exercise, and great food. I have not missed a work party since I first started going to them in 2012. I still have a great time at every one of them.

I Make Time to Attend a General Meeting Bring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of GUNTHER you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting, Joyce Alessio won the $25 door prize. Had he attended the meeting, New * Used * Consignments Joe Villanueva would have won the $500 Attendance Prize. Be there or be square! 652 I Combat Match (1st Saturday) One of my favorite events at EF&GA is the Combat Match. Every month I have a great time, hang out with great people, and learn how to sharpen my pistol skills some more. Brian Lamb does a fantastic job of running a safe and smooth match that is always challenging and fun. If you participate in it you know what I mean. The competition is very friendly, the event goes quickly, and you learn good habits for shooting effectively and safely. If you want to learn more about it or if you want to try it yourself, here is some advice that could help you along: - Read the details about the event on the web site. https://www.escondidofishandgame.com/events/combat-match/ - Arrive early, especially if you have a group that wants to shoot on the same squad. I would like to take a moment and acknowledge all the Shoot Chairs at our club for running fun and safe shoots. They have all been trained as Range Safety Officers and are responsible for the match safety of the competitors and guests. Thank them and their assistants for the dedication they put into planning and executing a safe match. I do stop by the matches every so often to make sure everyone is having a good time and proper safe handling of firearms are being adhered to. I pay particular attention to the Shoot Chair to make sure they are setting a good example by having eyes, ears, safe gun handling and not parking in the fire lane… Occasionally I am asked for my opinion on a shooting subject and this time I got an interesting question: • What is our policy on Pregnant Women shooting at our range (casual or in competition)? My immediate answer was; Are you crazy, don’t get in the way of a Pregnant Women with a Firearm! I say that with no malice towards women, I had the pleasure of being part (a small part) of that phase of my wife’s journey towards child birth… So in the search to enlighten this neanderthal brain I went to the oracle of all knowledge – Google. I did find what I was looking for and thought I would share an excellent article from Julie Golob. “Julie Goloski Golob is an American professional sport shooter with one gold (2017 Lady Classic) and two silver medals (2005 Lady Standard and 2011 Lady Production), one bronze medal (2014 Lady Production) and seven Ladies Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship gold medals. She also has 2 US IPSC Nationals Lady titles and 13 USPSA Handgun Nationals Lady titles, and is the only seven Division USPSA National Champion in history.”

As you can see she kinda knows how to shoot and has a shooters perspective. The article she wrote is called “Shooting While Pregnant” and can be found at this address: https://www.juliegolob.com/wp-content/ uploads/2014/01/Ebook_Shooting_While_Pregnant_ Cold Range: Resource_for_Expecting_Moms_Julie_Golob.pdf So my revised answer is: The decision to shoot • Blue Blinking Lights ON pregnant is between the shooter and her doctor as long • DO NOT handle Firearms & Equipment as the shooter can safely handle her firearm(s). Also I • Handle Targets am not getting in the way of a Pregnant Women with a • Sweep up brass behind the Yellow Firearm…!!! and in front of the Red line The annual BBQ is here and we will be having several shooting activities. Please remember to bring eye and OK TO GO DOWN RANGE ear protection for everyone (yes, that does mean your kids) in your group. Hot Range:

It is mandatory to wear both (eye & ear protection) ear • Blue Blinking Lights OFF while participating in any shooting activity. It is highly recommended to wear eye protection when you are in • Handle Firearms & Equipment the shooting area regardless if you are shooting or not. • OK to Load/Unload Vehicle One last safety suggestion – Don’t overload your BBQ plate and have an AD (accidental drop), get a second • Sweep up brass behind Red line plate! Contact Don at 760-433-2411 13 BLACK POWDER NEWS By Garth Warner By the time you read this we should have completed our 40th Anniversary Shoot. My thanks to all of you that participated and helped make it happen. General Update: I have received a number of contacts lately from new shooters and prospective new members about our black powder program at the Escondido Fish & Game Association Range. Below is a synopsis of the firearms we compete with, and the courses that we shoot: Black Powder Silhouette This monthly program entails shooting at metallic silhouette targets, at three different distances, in three relays each. Pistol/ Revolver always shoot at 25yd to 75yd. Rifle: Open Class, (load from the bench and any sights), Rifle-Primitive class: (Fixed Iron Sights only and load from a pouch worn on the shooter), or Black Powder Cartridge Rifle class: (BPCR), replica or original falling block or repeating using lead bullets, and brass cartridges. (Any sights allowed.) All Rifle categories shoot at metallic silhouette targets at ranges from 25yd to 150yds. This varies by month. This competition is restricted to traditional Black Powder rifles and pistols, shooting patched round lead ball. BPCR can shoot soft conical lead projectiles only. Traditional Black Powder or Black Powder substitutes only can be used for powder. Sorry, but we do not compete with modern In-line muzzle loading pistols or rifles or with jacketed bullets (or sabots). As contests go, this is pretty slow and low key. New shooters are always welcome. We WILL take the time to help new pilgrims on the range. You are STRONGLY encouraged to come out and watch a contest to see what it is all about before spending any $$$ on gear or equipment. Muzzle Loading Bullseye This monthly program is for traditional muzzle loading competitors. We shoot rifles, pistols, and tradeguns (smoothbores) on various courses of fire at paper targets. Shooting for precision allows the competitor to measure his/her progress on an ongoing basis. We keep our own database which allows for competition within the various classes of shooters, masters, experts, sharpshooters, and marksmen. The highlight of the year is our annual Muzzle Loader Congress held in October; this is a trophy shoot that requires pre-entry and features a wide array of awards. Please see the Shoot Chair contact information on the EF&GA website for more information about each discipline. Contest schedules are listed in the newsletters. Next Contest: Our May 26th contest will be a Super Short Range contest with targets at 25, 50, and 75 yards. This is also a Tradegun contest for those of you so inclined. Pistol will start at 8:30, rifle and tradegun will start at approximately 10:00. This is the next to last chance to enter a rifle contest and get a green ticket to win a rifle in our Black Diamond 6 month challenge. One ticket is earned with each month’s entry.
