Casagrande Volume Editor Preface This is an exceptionally informative, innovative, and relevant Bulletin in a number of important respects, all captured by its care­ fully chosen title. Of critical and timely significance is its interdisci­ plinary approach. The restoration of damaged and disturbed environments represents more than a technical challenge. We cannot, of course, accomplish ecological restoration lacking basic biophysical knowledge and management tools. Yet, these technical and scientific issues represent only the beginning of the restoration task, typically omitting the necessity of precisely identifying what we are trying to accomplish, articulating a compelling vision of this goal, and develop­ ing a comprehensive methodology for achieving this end. This latter consideration ultimately constitutes a question of values, a determination of what attributes of worth and benefit from nature we are striving to restore and render available to people and society. This issue becomes especially prominent when trying to restore damaged environments where large numbers of people live, most particularly in the modern city. Whenever large numbers of people are involved, we must address in specific, persuasive, and precise ways that goods and services are provided by restored environments, as well as the costs and sacrifices people may be required to make to achieve this end. We must also recognize that restoration cannot be accomplished lacking the understanding, appreciation, and support of local communities. At the least, this necessitates a deep and sym­ pathetic knowledge of the characteristics, interests, attitudes, and needs of varying human populations. An additionally important facet of this Bulletin is its focus on the modern city. In my opinion, one of the tragic assumptions of contemporary life is the widespread belief that city people no longer require an abundant, diverse, and healthy natural environ­ ment to lead lives rich in satisfaction and meaning. Most urban dwellers are repeatedly reminded of the presumed unimportance of nature in the urban context. Environmental considerations are routinely omitted from matters of urban building design, siting decisions, road building, industrial development, shopping center construction, and various other land and water planning and management choices. The average developer and politician typically views with indifference remaining pockets of open space, and often regards environmental expenditures as the lowest of budgetary priorities. Likewise, few city officials recognize

Warren 2011 Abstract King Philip’s War (1675-1676) was one of the bloodiest per capita in American history. Although hostile native groups damaged much of New England, Connecticut emerged unscathed from the conflict. Connecticut’s role has been obscured by historians’ focus on the disasters in the other colonies as well as a misplaced emphasis on “King Philip,” a chief sachem of the Wampanoag groups. Although Philip formed the initial hostile coalition and served as an important leader, he was later overshadowed by other sachems of stronger native groups such as the Narragansetts. Viewing the conflict through the lens of a ‘Great Narragansett War’ brings Connecticut’s role more clearly into focus, and indeed enables a more accurate narrative for the conflict. Connecticut achieved success where other colonies failed by establishing a policy of moderation towards the native groups living within its borders. This relationship set the stage for successful military operations. Local native groups, whether allied or neutral did not assist hostile Indians, denying them the critical intelligence necessary to coordinate attacks on Connecticut towns. The English colonists convinced allied Mohegan, Pequot, and Western Niantic warriors to support their military operations, giving Connecticut forces a decisive advantage in the field.

Crist President, Newark History Society November 9, 2009 Godly Government Puritans and the Founding of Newark This is the 30th program that the Newark History Society has sponsored. Most of our programs have covered 20th century topics, although a few have dipped into the 19th century, including our program on Thomas Edison, which took us back to the 1870s. But tonight I want to go back 350 years, to 1659, to a time when England was in crisis. The resolution of that crisis led directly to the founding of Newark by a group of Puritans from New Haven Colony. The crisis was caused by the power vacuum in england following oliver Cromwell’s death in 1658. Cromwell had been the lord Protector of england following the english civil war and the execution of King Charles I. His son, richard Cromwell, succeeded him but quickly proved incapable, and he resigned early in 1659. england was left without an effective government. Army generals and their troops, as well as a rump Parliament, moved into the power vacuum. eventually, General George monck marched with his troops to london and engineered the restoration of the monarchy. So, after eleven years in exile, Charles II returned to england in may 1660 and finally succeeded his father as King. The people of new Haven Colony closely followed the crisis in england. With their strong Puritan views, they recognized immediately that the restoration of Charles II would turn their world upside down. They had formed new Haven Colony in 1639 to demonstrate how Biblical rules should guide the organization of both church and state, and they had expected to be the proverbial “city on the hill” showing God’s Way to england.

    Sora Rail in Stilly and the identification of immature small crakes D. I. M. Wallace The immature Sora Rail Porzana Carolina present on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, from 26th September to 9th October 1973 (Brit. Birds, 67: 320; Scilly Bird Report for IQ73'- 19-21) was the first to be recorded in Europe since 1920. The record was accepted by both the Rarities Committee and the Records Committee of the British Ornithologists' Union, and the species was once again listed in category A of the British and Irish list (Ibis, 116: 578). This short paper, which stems from the decision to publish in this journal the details of records that result in category promotion, also includes some comparative notes on immature small crake identification. DETAILS OF THE SORA RAIL IN SCILLY The bird was first seen in the rushes of the Big Pool by D. Smallshire, but early opinions on its identity were hopelessly divided. DS, A. R. Dean and B. R. Dean persisted in seeing slight but distinct differences from the closely related Spotted Crake P. porzana, the species to which others ascribed the bird on the basis of its noticeably buff under tail. The literature available at the time implied that this was a character only of the Spotted Crake and the controversy might have remained unresolved but for the arrival of fresh, open- minded observers, some already familiar with Sora Rails. A phone call from DS to DIMW on 7th produced redoubled efforts at identification. Close attention had already been paid to the bird by B.

It breeds throughout the San Francisco Bay area, north into Sonoma and Napa cos., throughout the Central Valley, and east of the Cascade-Sierra Nevada crest south at least to Mono Lake (Grinnell and Miller 1944). It probably breeds regularly in southern California mountains, but the only recent breeding record is from Fain Springs in the San Bernardino Mts. Historical nesting localities include Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mts. and the Owens Valley, Inyo Co. There are a few summer records from the Salton Sea district and along the coastal lowlands, but recent nesting there has not been confirmed (Garrett and Dunn 1981). In winter, northern and high-elevation populations migrate southward. Widespread along the southern California coast in winter, as well as at the Salton Sea and the Colorado River, and visitors occasionally reach the Channel Islands (Garrett and Dunn 1981). There are historical, northern coast wintering records (Grinnell and Miller 1944). Although absent from the immediate coast in summer (McCaskie et al. 1979), visits saline emergent wetlands in the nonbreeding season. Most common rail in California and North America, but numbers have been reduced by loss of wetlands. SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: Primarily forages on the ground in dense, emergent vegetation, but less commonly walks on mudflats in marsh openings, wades into water, or swims.
