If there’s one song that seems to really capture the direction Karmin is going with their music, this seems to be the one. The song is a fun yet dramatic romp heavy on emotion, but it crescendos into a quirkily delivered chorus of “I guess I didn’t know you at all!” while vocal harmonies envelop themselves around the song’s mammoth-sized melody. When I first heard this cut, without even knowing anything about their new direction, it was obvious that Karmin has more sincere goals in mind than just simple pop stardom. When they broke out this song during their set, it had an impact that hit megatons harder than their other, more well-known material. Clearly, the audience members who didn’t already know this song were reeled in by it immediately because heads were bobbing venue-wide to its spastic drum beat. Naturally, the down-to-earth pop duo saved “Brokenhearted” for last, ensuring that the sold-out crowd of the Chicago Theatre were treated to a chance for a gargantuan sing-along. As memorable as this song is and as grateful as Karmin most likely may be for its success, something tells me that it’ll eventually be the song that Karmin grows tired of performing. Once they develop themselves as full-fledged indie-pop artists, this song may feel even more unfamiliar to them – but only time will tell. After a passionate set from Karmin, headliner Lindsey Stirling took the stage to wow the masses. Stirling knows exactly what she’s doing and what her fans want to see. Her show features exciting visuals, wicked lighting, fierce ballet dancing and choreographed moves (courtesy also of backup dancers, some of whom I’m *quite* sure were on So You Think You Can Dance?) – all of this while Lindsey whisks around the stage wailing on her violin like it’s going to save the world from the end times. As stunning as her show was and as talented as she clearly is, though, a few of the songs fell a bit flat due to the substitution of live drums in place of her usual hard-hitting dubstep infused beats. “Shatter Me” was saved for the end of her set and for good reason, the song has seen serious chart success and is a huge fan favorite. But once the beat kicked in, it seemed quite anticlimactic when performed with live drums. The presentation of her show as a whole makes sense with a live drummer but songs like this, where the production is key more than with any of her other work, should sound closer to the recording. With that being said, Stirling’s show wasn’t the least bit disappointing and was a blast to experience. Even still, upon leaving the Chicago Theatre, there was an unshakable feeling that Karmin stole the show. At the very least, after hearing some of the new Leo Rising material live, excitement for this upcoming record is at a fever pitch. I bumped into the dynamic duo after the show and it begs mentioning that they’re absolutely the sweetest and most down to earth musicians I’ve encountered. There’s something really authentic and genuine about them, it comes across vividly onstage and is sure to bleed through their new Leo Rising material. One thing is certain, we’re definitely salivating for this new record to drop not only because it’s sure to be amazing, but Amy & Nick both stated that they would likely be back in Chicago around that time.
