  • Ludics As Subversion in Arturo Arias's Sopa De Caracol (2002)
Boise State University ScholarWorks World Languages Faculty Publications and Department of World Languages Presentations 6-1-2009 Ludics as Subversion in Arturo Arias’s Sopa de Caracol (2002) Adrian Kane Boise State University This is an author-produced, peer-reviewed version of this article. DOI: 10.1080/14753820902938050 This is an author-produced, peer-reviewed version of this article. Doi: 10.1080/14753820902938050 Ludics as Subversion in Arturo Arias’s Sopa de caracol (2002) ADRIAN TAYLOR KANE Boise State University The plot of Arturo Arias’s 2002 novel Sopa de caracol unfolds during a dinner party hosted by the protagonist, Rodrigo. Over the course of the evening, Rodrigo recounts to his guests a series of anecdotes about his days as a revolutionary in the Latin American left. This opportunity provides the protagonist an ideal occasion to playfully reflect in humorous fashion, and with an ironic tone, upon the faults of his former militant revolutionary ideology. Arias thus puts into practice his notion that novels, as systems of ideological signifiers, allow for the exploration of transitions in identity and ideology.1 Rooted in this notion, in the present study, I seek to demonstrate the way in which Sopa de caracol reveals a transition in leftist ideology in the wake of the nation’s civil war.

  • Michelle Branch Reinvents Her Music
17 January 2012 | MP3 at voaspecialenglish.com Michelle Branch Reinvents Her Music AP Michelle Branch performing in 2009 MARIO RITTER: Welcome to EXPLORATIONS in VOA Special English. I'm Mario Ritter. Today, we look at ways women are reinventing themselves and some of the things they do. We will learn about women who compete in the hard-hitting sport of American football. We hear about a different kind of store for girls. But first, we tell about award-winning singer Michelle Branch. She has reinvented her musical style not once, but two times in the past ten years. Michelle Branch recently returned to the sound that made her famous. Christopher Cruise tells us more. (MUSIC) Michelle Branch (MUSIC) CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Michelle Branch has been writing music since she was 14 years old. That was the same year she received a guitar for her birthday. Her big break came a year later when her best friend called with an urgent request. 2 MICHELLE BRANCH: "She called me, said 'you have to get down here and bring a tape or meet this guy because he's going to be leaving soon.' [I] said, well I can't get down there. She said, 'do you have… just walk, ride your bike, anything.' My neighbors had left their golf cart out in the driveway with the key in it. And so I took the golf cart and I went down and I was waiting as this guy was leaving. I was like 'excuse me Mister, will you listen to my tape?' And he was just horrified.

  • EDM (Dance Music): Disco, Techno, House, Raves… ANTHRO 106 2018
EDM (Dance Music): Disco, Techno, House, Raves… ANTHRO 106 2018 Rebellion, genre, drugs, freedom, unity, sex, technology, place, community …………………. Disco • Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. • Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. • Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. • Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York • The seventies witnessed the flowering of gay clubbing, especially in New York. For the gay community in this decade, clubbing became 'a religion, a release, a way of life'. The camp, glam impulses behind the upsurge in gay clubbing influenced the image of disco in the mid-Seventies so much that it was often perceived as the preserve of three constituencies - blacks, gays and working-class women - all of whom were even less well represented in the upper echelons of rock criticism than they were in society at large. • Before the word disco existed, the phrase discotheque records was used to denote music played in New York private rent or after hours parties like the Loft and Better Days. The records played there were a mixture of funk, soul and European imports. These "proto disco" records are the same kind of records that were played by Kool Herc on the early hip hop scene. - STARS and CLUBS • Larry Levan was the first DJ-star and stands at the crossroads of disco, house and garage. He was the legendary DJ who for more than 10 years held court at the New York night club Paradise Garage.
