Yet the latter must be able to play a role as a driving force for conflict resolution and peace building. The arts, and dance in particular, can initiate new perspectives for the future. While performing arts have value in and for themselves, they can engage with societal challenges such as inequalities, migration, conflict and violence, and create a deeper intercultural understanding. The arts can prepare citizens to think critically, act creatively, and foster civic engagement and social change, while at the same time providing a safe space to express their emotions. Dancers For the World (DFW) has demonstrated its power in supporting the most vulnerable, empowering children, women and young adults, and creating protected surroundings to exchange in time of crises. -

Modernism 1 Modernism Modernism, in its broadest definition, is modern thought, character, or practice. More specifically, the term describes the modernist movement, its set of cultural tendencies and array of associated cultural movements, originally arising from wide-scale and far-reaching changes to Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Modernism was a revolt against the conservative values of realism.[2] [3] [4] Arguably the most paradigmatic motive of modernism is the rejection of tradition and its reprise, incorporation, rewriting, recapitulation, revision and parody in new forms.[5] [6] [7] Modernism rejected the lingering certainty of Enlightenment thinking and also rejected the existence of a compassionate, all-powerful Creator God.[8] [9] In general, the term modernism encompasses the activities and output of those who felt the "traditional" forms of art, architecture, literature, religious faith, social organization and daily life were becoming outdated in the new economic, social, and political conditions of an Hans Hofmann, "The Gate", 1959–1960, emerging fully industrialized world. Simone Forti Goes to the Zoo* JULIA BRYAN-WILSON In the photograph, a young woman in a short skirt and sandals sits on a bench. With her crooked elbow, she braces her handbag to her body, tucking her large sketchpad into her armpit. She is petting a lion cub, and as she gazes down to witness the small but extraordinary fact of her hand on its fur, the ani- mal’s face turns towards the camera lens with closed eyes. This is dancer and choreographer Simone Forti on one of her many visits to the zoo during the brief time she lived in Rome in the late 1960s. Far from today’s “wildlife sanctu- aries” where animals can ostensibly wander freely, as the photo of this uncaged cub might suggest, the Giardino Zoologico di Roma offered a highly controlled environment in which animals lived within tight enclosures; Forti was here indulging in a staged, paid encounter, one that she characterized as “irre- sistible.”1 Irresistible because she was consistently moved by the creatures she drew and studied—moved as in stirred, or touched, as well as in shifted, or altered. As I argue, her dance practice changed dramatically as a result of the time she spent in Rome observing animal motions and interacting with other, animate forms of art. ADF 'S 2021 Season Dedicated to Cynthia Wyse
ADF 's 2021 Season Dedicated to Cynthia Wyse We are thrilled to dedicate the 2021 ADF Season to Cynthia Wyse, our devoted Director of Finance & Administration. For the past 33 summers, Cynthia’s stewardship of ADF’s fiscal well-being and untiring work to support the festival’s programs have been extraordinary. An Ohio native who committed much of her life’s work toward an art form that was at first foreign to her, she became one of ADF’s biggest champions. Beyond the oversight of financial and administrative matters, Cynthia has led ADF’s internship program and provided mentorship to countless finance interns. She has made sure that artists, faculty, musicians, and staff were always paid and in the midst of it all was a nurturer to many. Frequent cheese balls and plentiful snacks provided by her have kept the staff nourished and re-energized during the most challenging days. We are going to miss Cynthia when she retires at the end of this calendar year, but we have so much gratitude for all that she has given to ADF. We wish her much happiness as she choreographs the next chapter in her life! To honor Cynthia’s legacy, we are launching a campaign to establish the Wyse Finance Internship Fund. The goal is to raise at least $25k over the next four months. ADF is contributing $12.5k to kick things off! Interest from the endowed gift will cover the annual stipend for our finance intern. We hope you will help us celebrate Cynthia and make a contribution that will have a lasting effect on nurturing and training future performing arts administrators. -

MENŲ PAŽINIMO BENDROJI PROGRAMA ŠOKIO MODULIS Parengė: Ieva Norkūnienė Šokio modulis, kaip naujos MENŲ programos bendrojo lavinimo mokykloms dalis, skiriasi nuo ankstesnių šio dalyko programų funkcionavimo sociokultūrinėje aplinkoje pažinimo, suvokimo bei vertinimo veiklos kryptimis. Iš šiuolaikinio žiūrovo šokio menas reikalauja atvirumo naujoms estetinėms patirtims, gilesnių istorinių bei teorinių žinių, mąstymo ir analitinių gebėjimų – tai yra aktyvaus dalyvavimo ne tik priimant, bet ir suvokiant bei interpretuojant scenos kūrinį, įvertinant jo estetinę vertę, meninius ypatumus. Šokio dalyko, kaip ir MENŲ programos, tikslas bei uždaviniai – plėtoti mokinių estetinę, kultūrinę ir bendrąsias (iniciatyvumo ir kūrybingumo, asmeninę, socialinę ir pilietinę, mokymosi mokytis, pažinimo) kompetencijas, ugdyti sumanų ir aktyvų kultūrinio gyvenimo dalyvį. Ir kartu – auginti nuovokų ir tolerantišką šokio meno žiūrovą (suvokėją, interpretatorių), kuris geba analizuoti ir vertinti šokio spektaklio ar judesio reiškinio estetinius bei meninius ypatumus ir moka taikyti šiuos gebėjimus skirtingoje meninėje aplinkoje, kasdieniame gyvenime bei veikloje. Šokio modulio struktūra Šokio dalykas aprėpia šokio meno istorijos, teorijos ir kritikos žinias, skirtas taikyti priimant ir suvokiant ir vertinant šokio meno ypatumus, analizuojant šokio funkcionavimo sociokultūrinėje aplinkoje pobūdį.
