Yet the latter must be able to play a role as a driving force for conflict resolution and peace building. The arts, and dance in particular, can initiate new perspectives for the future. While performing arts have value in and for themselves, they can engage with societal challenges such as inequalities, migration, conflict and violence, and create a deeper intercultural understanding. The arts can prepare citizens to think critically, act creatively, and foster civic engagement and social change, while at the same time providing a safe space to express their emotions. Dancers For the World (DFW) has demonstrated its power in supporting the most vulnerable, empowering children, women and young adults, and creating protected surroundings to exchange in time of crises. -

Balázs Arató - Art Manager/International Relations - National Dance Theatre / Budapest Dance Festival, Budapest, Hungary After completing his dance education as a ballet dancer at the Hungarian Dance Academy (Budapest,1997), Balázs Arató danced with the Hungarian National Ballet (Hungary) and with the Konzert & Theater St. Gallen (Switzerland). After finishing his dancing career, he started to learn cultural and museum management at the Eotvos Lorand University (2003) and at the Moholy- Nagy University of Art and Design (2012). He has founded his own company and also worked at the Aranytíz Cultural Center as art manager until 2005, when he got invited to work in the management of the National Dance Theatre Budapest. During his time with the National Dance Theatre, he has worked with Shen Wei Dance Arts, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Cullberg Ballet, Bridgman/Packer Dance, and many others. A Study on the Gender Imbalance Among Professional Choreographers Working in the Fields of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance
Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world. -

Pressrelease from Cullberg Ballet 14 January 2014 Gabriel Smeets new artistic director of Cullberg Ballet Dutch Gabriel Smeets is appointed new artistic director of Cullberg Ballet. The four-year stint will begin on May 1, 2014. Gabriel Smeets is currently the artistic director of the SNDO, the School for New Dance Development under the umbrella of The Amsterdam School of the Arts/Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Together with Managing Director Monica Fredriksson, Smeets will lead Cullberg Ballet, with a responsibility for the repertoire starting season 2015-2016. On his current position Gabriel Smeet has transformed the school in a 4 years-program for choreography and managed to provide the SNDO with a strong position in the international field of performing arts education. Alumni from the SNDO present their works in the international performing arts festivals and venues. He has a background in journalism and communication, as well as a dramaturge. He is active as a mentor and curator of panels and symposiums in the field of dance. He has been the interim chief curator of the festival programming at the Springdance Festival in Utrecht. “I am very excited and I look forward to this important position. I come to a company with a rich legacy and I am very proud to take an active part of its future. Under my artistic leadership, Cullberg Ballet will continue being one of the most important players in the international dance field. We will work with new talents and more profoundly with the audience, keeping a strong international profile as well as developing our presence in Sweden.
