walking among the stars

When I was a child, back in the 80s, I wanted to be an astronaut. I had a stellarium that would shine onto my bedroom ceiling and I would try to touch all the simulated stars, one by one. I flew a toy Space Shuttle around my room imagining I was amoung those bright points of light. Fast forward to 1998, and I found myself working for NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, headquartered at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, about a year before its launch.

Working on a major NASA observatory that has been decades in the making, just before it launches, is nail-bitingly exciting. The scientists, engineers, technologists and program managers have spent their careers making a cutting-edge piece of equipment that looks at X-ray light from our Universe. They had to ensure that the spacecraft was able to withstand the rigors of a launch by the Space Shuttle, followed by receiving a boost into its faraway orbit that takes the spacecraft about a third of the way to the Moon, and function perfectly in an extreme environment without help from astronauts once it was deployed.

30401 cc18.indd 22 12/14/17 8:55 AM Cassiopeia is the debris field of a star that exploded about 400 years ago. Prior to its demise in a supernova explosion, it was a star about 15 to 20 times the mass of our Sun.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory is designed to observe the high-energy Universe looking at such things as colliding galaxy clusters, supermassive black holes, and exploding stars. Chandra has looked at one such exploded star, Cassiopeia the stars A (Cas A for short), repeatedly since its operations began in 1999. Cas A is the debris field of a star that exploded about 400 years ago. Prior to its demise in a supernova explosion, it was a star about 15 to 20 times the mass of our Sun.

Supernovas are one of the most violent types of events in the Universe, with the force of the explosion generating powerful flashes of radiation, which can briefly outshine all the light from its galaxy. The energy in the explosion fuses together lighter into heavier ones such as oxygen, iron, carbon, and others— all necessary to life. In addition to the energy from their explosion, their size and distance can be hard to fathom. While it is relatively close for a cosmic object, Cas A is still about 10,000 light years from Earth. That’s about 100,000 trillion kilometers away, a bit under a billion times greater than the distance between the Earth and the Sun. The debris from Cas A covers an area about 40 million billion times that of the main bodies of our Solar System (the Sun and 8 planets).

The explosion that destroyed the star, however, is the end of Cassiopeia A’s journey. Instead, it is the beginning of a story about transformation, or rather, a translation.

When a satellite such as Chandra observes an object in space, its camera records photons, packets of energy that constitue electromagnetic radiation, or light. These recordings of packets of energy come down to Earth from the spacecraft via NASA’s Deep Space network coded in the form of 1’s and 0’s. Scientific software then translates that data into a table that contains the time, energy, and position of each photon that struck the detector during the observation. The data are further processed with software to form the visual representation of the object.

Since all X-rays are invisible to the unaided human eye, this translation allows scientists to see physical processes Top image: X-Ray image of that would otherwise be hidden. For example, the blue, wispy arcs show where the Cassiopeia A, a supernova acceleration is taking place in an expanding shock wave generated by the explosion. remnant located about 10,000 The red and green regions reveal material from the destroyed star that has been light years from Earth. Credit: heated to millions of degrees by the explosion. Chandra data for Cas A spreads NASA/CXC/SAO across 17 years, over two million seconds of information. A time-lapse movie of Bottom: 3-D on-screen Chandra’s X-ray data was made by combining observations taken in 2000, 2002, modeling of Cassiopeia A. 2004, and 2007. Scientists can use this to measure the expansion of the leading edge of the explosion’s outer blast wave. The researchers find that the velocity is about 11 million miles per hour. But that’s not all.

In 2013, an interactive multiwavelength three-dimensional reconstruction of this supernova remnant was created. The visualization uses X-ray data from Chandra, plus infrared data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and data from ground-based optical observatories. Because Cas A is the result of an explosion, the stellar debris is expanding radially outwards from the explosion center. Using geometry, we can create a 3-D model.

The positions of these points in three-dimensional space were found by using the

24 Museum of Science

30401 cc18.indd 24 12/14/17 8:55 AM The Cassiopeia A model is the result of a large team of people in various degrees and stages: from those behind the telescope observes light migrating from across the Universe, to those responsible for the communication of the data to those who are using it, to those working on the translation of that information into the myriad forms in which we can study it. This model, and others, are available free online at chandra. si.edu/3dprint so you too can hold a dead star in your hand. Doppler effect and certain assumptions about the supernova explosion. It is the first time we could see above, below, around, and through an exploded star. It is the first data-driven 3-D model of a dead star.

We then took the 3D model of Cas A and created the first ever 3-D print of a supernova remnant. While this 3-D model is exciting for astronomers who study exploded stars, the work on Cassiopeia A is not solely for the experts. Collaboration with specialists at the Smithsonian Institution led to the creation of the first ever 3-D print of a supernova remnant based on observational data.Working with blind and visually-impaired audiences we improved the model based on tactile exploration and feedback—in durability, resolution, size, and even tactile access inside the model.

But still we weren’t done. The 3-D model was then translated into virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) with the help of colleagues at Brown University first for an immersive cave environment and then for personal VR devices. So now we can go inside Cas A, zooming in and out, turning layers of the supernova remnant on and off.

It’s been about 30 years since I flew my toy Space Shuttle through a pretend starfield shining on my ceiling. And though my feet are still firmly planted on the ground, today I can hold information from a dead star that originated 10,000 light years away from us in the palm of my hand. And finally I can walk among the stars.

GRIDIRON GLORY Experience the most extensive and comprehensive exhibition ever created on America’s most popular sport. View more than 200 artifacts, award-winning photographs, and one-of-a-kind documents from the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s collection. Watch spectacular footage from the archives of NFL Films. Learn the science behind the game and get to know the inspirational stories of its pioneers, coaches, and players, including those who broke social barriers— demonstrating how the sport is a microcosm for changing attitudes about equality and opportunity.

Throughout the exhibition, you can interact with components that challenge both mind and body and demonstrate the change in equipment, uniforms, and communication devices over the years. You can even delve into the history of five-time Super Bowl Champions New England Patriots.

Museum educators have developed presentations on 3D printed cleats, how virtual reality is being used to train players and referees about the game, and how sugary sports drinks can impact an athlete’s performance. In our daily science interpretations and in a podcast with leading CTE researchers at Boston University, we are offering visitors an opportunity to explore the compelling scientific evidence surrounding brain injuries. Produced by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gridiron Glory will be on display in Nichols Gallery through January 7, 2018.
