Almost 300 species were collected on fungi and in flight interception traps. Among them, 18 species were recorded from the Western Beskid Mts. for the first time, 41 were new records for the Babia Góra NP, and 16 were from various categories on the Polish Red List of Animals. The first certain record of Bolitochara tecta ASSING, 2014 in Poland is reported. KEY WORDS: beetles, macromycetes, ecology, trophic interactions, Polish Carpathians, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Introduction Beetles of the Babia Góra massif have been studied for over 150 years. The first study of the Coleoptera of Babia Góra was by ROTTENBERG th (1868), which included data on 102 species. During the 19 century, INTERESTING BEETLES (COLEOPTERA) IN THE BABIA GÓRA NP 213 several other papers including data on beetles from Babia Góra were published: 37 species were recorded from the area by KIESENWETTER (1869), a single species by NOWICKI (1870) and 47 by KOTULA (1873). -

In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district. -

In many countries, they are well established for environmental impact assessment, but even in the well-studied Central European fauna, species identification can be very difficult. A comprehensive and taxonomically well-curated DNA barcode library could remedy this deficit and could also link hundreds of years of traditional knowledge with next generation sequencing technology. However, such a beetle library is missing to date. This study provides the globally largest DNA barcode reference library for Coleoptera for 15 948 individuals belonging to 3514 well-identified species (53% of the German fauna) with representatives from 97 of 103 families (94%). This study is the first comprehensive regional test of the efficiency of DNA barcoding for beetles with a focus on Germany. Sequences ≥500 bp were recovered from 63% of the specimens analysed (15 948 of 25 294) with short sequences from another 997 specimens. -
Vertical Stratification of Xylobiontic Beetles in Floodplain Forests of the Donau-Auen National Park, Lower Austria
Potential effects of box elder control measures and vertical stratification of xylobiontic beetles in floodplain forests of the Donau-Auen National Park, Lower Austria Kathrin Stürzenbaum Department of Tropical Ecology and Animal Biodiversity, University of Vienna, Austria Abstract Xylobiontic beetles represent a substantial fraction of the biodiversity of forest ecosystems and are useful bioindicators for evaluating effects of forest management measures. This study was conducted in the Donau-Auen National Park in Lower Austria, one of the largest remaining semi-natural floodplain forests in Central Europe. There, for five months in summer 2012, beetles were sampled using flight interception traps, a widely used method for inventorying the fauna of wood inhabiting beetles. The aims of the study were to investigate the differences of xylobiontic beetle assemblages between two forest strata (understory and canopy) and the possible effects of an abruptly increased volume of fresh dead wood on them. The dead wood originated from the neophytic Box Elder (Acer negundo), that is becoming more and more widespread in riparian landscapes, and was girdled or felled at several locations in the national park to prevent a further dispersal. At five sites where such control measures had been applied beetles were sampled with one flight interception trap in the understorey and one in the canopy, the same was done at five reference sites without management. In total, 267 species of xylobiontic beetles (of 49 families) were recorded. Species richness, total abundance and also the composition of beetle assemblages differed significantly between forest strata. Total abundance was higher in the understorey, whereas species richness was higher in the canopy. -

This paper compiles an updated checklist of Sicilian (including the circumsi- cilian islets) species of Elateridae. Listed species came from published data along with new Sicilian material collected by the authors and other entomologists in the last few decades. Seventy-three species are reported, with new data for many rarely collected species in Sicily. Six species are recorded for the first time: Dalopius marginatus (Linné, 1758), Isidus moreli Mulsant and Rey, 1874, Ampedus sanguineus (Linnaeus, 1758), Zorochros meridionalis (Castelnau, 1840), Agriotes infuscatus Desbrochers des Loges, 1870, and the invasive allochthonous species Conoderus posticus (Eschscholtz, 1829). Lanelater notodonta (Latreille, 1827) is considered extinct in Sicily. 1. Introduction The so called “click beetles” (Elateridae) belong to a large cosmopolitan family of beetles. Worldwide some 10,000 species in 400 genera of Elateridae have been scientifically described (Slipinski et al. 2011). Like in many others Coleoptera families the highest species diversity is to be found in the tropics (Johnson 2002). The adults can be recognized by the characteristic shape of their pronotum and overall elongated body. Most of these beetles are capable of righting themselves from an overturned position by arching their body and then instantaneously straightening out, a process which hurls the insect into the air producing a typical sound, hence their common name of “click” beetles. -
General Overview of Saproxylic Coleoptera
Chapter 2 General Overview of Saproxylic Coleoptera Matthew L. Gimmel and Michael L. Ferro Abstract A broad survey of saproxylic beetles (Coleoptera) from literature and personal observations was conducted, and extensive references were included to serve as a single resource on the topic. Results are summarized in a table featuring all beetle families and subfamilies with saproxylicity indicated for both adults and larvae (where known), along with information on diversity, distribution, habits, habitat, and other relevant notes. A discussion about the prevalence of and evolu- tionary origins of beetles in relation to the saproxylic habitat, as well as the variety of saproxylic beetle habits by microhabitat, is provided. This initial attempt at an overview of the entire order shows that 122 (about 65%) of the 187 presently recognized beetle families have at least one saproxylic member. However, the state of knowledge of most saproxylic beetle groups is extremely fragmentary, particularly in regard to larval stages and their feeding habits. 2.1 Introduction to Beetles There are nearly 400,000 described species of beetles, which comprise 40% of all described insect species (Zhang 2011). In fact, one in every four animal species (from jellyfish to Javan rhinos) is a beetle. The dominance of this group in terrestrial ecosystems can hardly be overstated—and the dead wood habitat is no exception in this regard.
