Tiger Express Indian Railways launched the first semi-luxury train Tiger Trail Circuit train on June 5, 2016, the World Environment Day, to promote wildlife conservation. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off its inaugural run from Delhi Safdarjung station through video conferencing. The tourist train with a five- night-six-day itinerary is operated by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). A mega outreach programme of Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India, the mobile exhibition is managed by Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre, Ahmedabad since inception. The eighth phase of the science exhibition on wheels, titled ‘Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAS)’ travelled across India from Oct 15, 2015 to May 7, 2016. SECAS was a unique partnership between Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, Ministry of Railways, Centre for Environment Education and Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC).

TO ITS CREDIT, THE SCIENCE EXPRESS HAS SET SIX RECORDS: Largest Climate Change awareness programme SECAS with an awareness programme on Climate Change travelled across India from Oct 15, 2015 to May 7, 2016 reaching out directly to over 20 lakh visitors. The 19,800 km journey halted at 64 locations in 20 states for the interactions.

In 2015, the organisation mailed 150 such letters with 150 suggestions in 150 days. The letters suggested measures to provide better security, improved facilities, cleanliness, quality food and other services to passengers. The NGO claims that over 50% of its suggestions have been accepted by the Railways. Most railway reports sent: Rail Parishad has also submitted 20 railway projects / reports (each 50 to 400 pages in length) for development of Railways.

Indigenous cylinder heads for diesel locos Cylinder head is a critical but very expensive component of diesel locomotives that needs to be replaced every 18-20 months or so. As these used to be manufactured only by large industries abroad, India had to depend on imports from England, USA and Germany. (Indian Railways started production of cylinder heads for some indigenously made engines later). In 1966, a man named Thakur Sajjan Singh Rathore Kanwala of Ajmer, Rajasthan, with no engineering degree or training, took up the challenge by Western Railway to make cylinder heads for the Paxman locos, which he fulfilled successfully. Since then, he with the help of his 10-member team has manufactured more than 4,000 cylinder heads for not less than 10 loco models on Indian Railways. Remarkably, his products have been acknowledged as a better substitute (than those made by big companies) with longer life and at less cost.

WR: Longest all-woman crew flight As part of International Women’s Day celebrations, Air India operated the world’s longest all-woman crew flight from Delhi to San Francisco, USA on March 6-7, 2016. The non-stop flight covered 14,500 km in 17 hr. The flight was under the command of Captain Kshamta Bajpayee and Captain Shubhangi Singh along with first officers Captain Ramya Kirti Gupta and Captain Amrit Namdhari. Besides the cockpit crew, the operation also had an all-woman cabin crew, check-in staff, doctor, customer care staff, ATC and the entire ground handling team.

Longest single journey Vishal Patel (b July 9, 1980), a non-resident Indian based in Phoenix, USA, travelled from Melbourne, Australia to New York, USA, covering 20,404.87 km (12,679 miles) across three continents in 27 hr 10 min. First private Near Space Launch Vehicle launch by students Space Kidz India, a team of students from Chennai, successfully launched a Near Space Launch Vehicle (NSLV) at Hindustan University’s Padur Campus football ground at 11.07 am on August 23, 2015. They were also able to retrieve the payload and the data stored in it. The launch vehicle, a 1,200 g balloon filled with helium gas, was fixed to a payload box and a parachute. The payload box had 10 sensors to record air quality, altitude and temperature at high altitudes. A GPS tracker was used to track the ascent and descent, coordinates (latitude and longitude) and speed of the balloon. As per the recorded data, the vehicle had touched an altitude of 1,06,789 ft before the balloon burst due to air pressure and a parachute brought back the payload safely. A team of students retrieved the payload box intact from a place 69 km away from the launch pad. Conceived and executed by Rifath Sharook (a student of class 12) and SKI Director Dr Srimathy Kesan, the team also comprised 10 second year Aero Space students from Hindustan University – Kambala Yagna Sai, Tanishq Dwivedi, Vinyas Purushotaman, Debanjana Chakraborthy, Nitin Kumar, Darshan VR, Mohammed Abdul Kashif, Vinay S Bhardwaj, Ranga Sayee and T Gobinath.
