Favorite Class: Constitutional Law with Professor Greenfield Why BC Law?: All other schools I applied to became irrelevant the moment I visited the BC Newton campus for the first time. The Ambassadors, who gave a tour to my parents and I, down with us long after the tour was over, made us feel welcome, and answered all of my mom’s relentless questions. Not only does BC exemplify Jesuit values, every one of my peers is willing to lend a hand beyond what you will find at any other law school.

O’Toole Jr. U.S. District Court for the District of MA, Derivatives intern at Shearman and Sterling Favorite Class: Secured Transactions with Professor Hillinger and Criminal Law with Professor Koh Why BC Law?: Coming into law school I was incredibly unsure about where I wanted to go in my legal career. Many law schools talked about all of the incredible opportunities available to their students, but BC Law was the only place that really talked about how they were going to help students find which of the opportunities was best for them. I felt the school would offer the kind of community and support I knew would be essential to both making the best of my three years in school, but also getting me wherever it was I wanted to go after graduating.

However, one particularly special theme I noticed within BC Law was its emphasis on community. There are plenty of stereotypes about the cut-throat and competitive nature of law school. However, BC Law has somehow managed to offer its students both a high-achieving

Of course COVID was a challenging development during the admissions process, but the numerous virtual events quickly showed me that BC Law treats everyone like family. The students are supportive, down-to-earth, accomplished, and humble—exactly the type of people you want by your side during the stress and excitement of law school. There are so many opportunities to meet people (even with Zoom!) and participate in events, competitions, alumni panels, and mentoring services. The alumni community is extremely active and willing to help students discover their interests and network all over the country and world. Here, the alumni network and the relationships between students and alumni were emphasized from the beginning through panels and conversations. Honestly, in my limited time here so far, it could not be more accurate. Whether it is an alum or a current student, people are willing to help each other in and out of the classroom, and I think seeing that as a prospective student and hearing it in every single discussion I had with members of the community struck a chord. I knew if I decided to attend BC that it would not become an excessively cutthroat environment but one in which people from all walks of life can come together and build lasting relationships.

Why BC Law?: I knew that I wanted to stay in the Boston area since I have built a life here in the 2 years leading up to Law school. When deciding where to apply in Boston, I had met a couple current students at BC and was struck by how kindly they spoke of their classmates and experiences. I wanted to go to a school that not only spoke of creating a strong and friendly community, but actually had one. To this day, I am blown away by the other 1Ls in my section and how genuinely helpful and supportive everyone is. Since being accepted to BC, I’ve learned more about the experiential learning and clinic opportunities that demonstrate the culture of serving others. This commitment to service has become an important factor in how I value BC’s impact on its community of students and the community at large.

Name: Manuel Alejandro Sanchez-Wong, [email protected] Year: 2023 Undergrad: University of Havana School of Law Experiences between College and Law School: I graduated as a lawyer in 2012 in Cuba. I practiced law in my native country until I migrated to the United States. As an immigrant, I took several unrelated jobs that among other expenses, helped cover my LSAC fee and school application. Activities at BC Law: Co-Chair of Stipends at PILF, Member of LALSA, Member of American Constitution Society, Member of Business Law Society. Favorite Class: Contract with Professor Hillinger Why BC Law?: Even while living in Cuba, one of the cities I dreamed of visiting was Boston. It was the image my mind would bring up when I thought of the United States. Though I migrated to Miami for logistical reasons, I always kept the dream alive of moving to Boston. Thus, in March of 2019, I made a trip to visit the city while it was still cold to see if it would be everything I imagined it would be. On that trip, I went to see the Boston College Campus. I knew about the university even before I moved to the United States because of its international prestige. And I made sure to research more before I made my visit to its beautiful campus. The afternoon I set foot on the Boston College campus, my breath was taken away-- I was in love. I am privileged because I have the opportunity to learn Law in a Democratic country, but more so because I get to do it in the school of my dreams.
