As a result of our focus, we were the first cabinet company awarded the Europeans approach kitchen design much differently than most Americans KCMA’s Environmental Stewardship do and the prevailing trends across European kitchen design are often a Program Certificate. good guide as to what could be coming our way. Here are some of the key differences between European and U.S. kitchens:

Use: European kitchens often consist of spaces which were built decades or even centuries ago or are centered in an urban area. The kitchens are usually separated from the rest of the home. Preparing food in front of guests doesn’t typically happen and Europeans eat their meals in a dining room and not in the actual kitchen where the food is prepared.

Size: Kitchens are smaller with less light and counter space than those in the U.S. Refrigerators are much smaller (about half the size of American) and do not have ice makers. The freezers are much smaller because frozen foods are not as typical in Europe as in the U.S., with Europeans tending to shop daily for their meals. There aren’t as many of processed food stored in cabinets either. European kitchens usually don’t have as many ISO appliances, such as a coffee maker, garbage disposal, microwave, and CERTIFIED dishwasher. 9001:2008 Modular: European kitchen designs are also much more likely than American kitchens to be modular, meaning they’re not permanently af- fixed to and can be taken with the owner when they move. Cabinets are usually connected to suspension rails on the kitchen walls, and they share their design aesthetic with the owner’s furniture and appliances. continued next page >

Frameless: Europe has frameless cabinets while framed cabinet construction is more popular in the U.S. Framed cabinets have a face frame that is visible behind the doors from the front view; the doors of frameless cabinets are attached directly to edges of the cabinet and not to a front face frame. Frameless cabinets are considered more contemporary while framed cabinet construction is generally considered more traditional looking.

Slab or flat-front: Europeans overwhelmingly prefer the look of flat-front, unembellished doors, rather than Shaker, or other recessed or raised panel door styles. Slab doors create a streamlined look that complements smaller spaces.

No knobs and pulls: European kitchens, featuring an overall linear look with slab doors, are designed to be Silver tones: European kitchens are still designed primar- opened and closed without hardware. One of the most popular cabinet finishes currently in Europe is Clutter-free countertops and hidden storage: Clear high-gloss, in one or a combination of colors. worktops can create the illusion of a larger kitchen, allowing the cook to prepare meals with all the tools stored behind cabinet doors or drawers. There’s also an emphasis on maximizing efficiency and functionality. Europeans get by with far less gadgets in the kitchen.

Smart kitchens: Technology has entered the kitchen in full force; from the faucets to the fridge to the lighting. Sensor-equipped kitchen faucets, appliances such as integrated speakers with Bluetooth functionality, motion activated lights; color changing lights and even the ability to control different lights from your smartphone or tablet. Even pop-out sockets for charging are becoming the norm, giving European kitchens a modern twist.

Because European kitchens are often smaller spaces, they are generally more simplistic and have cleaner lines with a focus on functionality and the efficient use of space. Kitchen sizes are also not standard so European style cabinetry needs to be versatile and adaptable so that cabinets can be easily added and subtracted from any space. European kitchens go a long way toward integrating new efficient materials and technology without compromising on looks. 5 Return to page 1
