Captain America may have had his Super-Soldier Serum but we are ready to put in the work to build our super hero powers. First, we will research and taste a variety of nutrient rich foods to create our own Super- Soldier Serum. Once we are fueled up and ready to go, it is time to test our reflexes, build our strength and sharpen our “Spidey – Senses” on our hero style agility course. Whether campers are looking to join the Justice League or be the newest addition to The Avengers, this week is sure to get them ready. Tentative Field Trips: Ohio Sports Academy/Get Air, Farmer’s Market HOMETOWN HEROES: (June 12-16) “Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive”…. In movies and comic books, Superman was always there to save the day. Take a look at our community and you will find that Supermen and Superwomen are all around. Every day our hometown heroes work to keep us happy, healthy and safe. Join us this week as we explore what it takes to be a firefighter, police officer, doctor, military personnel, and more. Try your hand at a military style training course, solve crimes like real detectives, create an old- fashioned bucket brigade, and much, much more! Tentative Field Trips: Firehouse, Police Station COMIC CON: (June 19-23) What does it take to be a superhero? This week we will study our heroes and what makes them super. We will train in the art of superheroes and learn how to lasso the enemy like Wonder Woman or wield a hammer like Thor. We will study the laws of physics with Peter Parker and Bruce Banner, construct our own supersuit like Ironman or control a tornado with Storm. Whomever your favorite super hero many be, you can be sure that we will explore all that they have to offer. Tentative Field Trips: Skyzone, Oak Grove Park Archery Range ANIMAL ALLIES: (June 26-30) Just like dolphins, Aquaman uses sonar to listen over long distances. Antman and Wasp both have abilities based on animal-like traits, but animals have hero-like powers of their own. A single elephant has been known to lift over 600 pounds! A peregrine falcon can fly at speeds close to 300mph. Rescue dogs are trained to run towards the danger to help find people trapped in a collapsed building or under an avalanche! This week, be prepared to run like a cheetah, work like a Clydesdale, camouflage like a chameleon, and fly like a condor as we set off to explore the amazing animal allies all around us. Tentative Field Trips: SISCA, Cincinnati Zoo POWER PLANT: (July 10-14) Poison Ivy is able to control plant life to do as she pleases, and Swamp Thing could use plant matter to build a new body for himself, but there are so many amazing plants that are heroes in their own right. Without plants, we would not be able to survive. Plants provide the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the shelter we live in, and some even have healing properties. Get ready to observe the lightning quick reflexes of the Venus flytrap, soar high with the towering red wood forest, and journey to the rainforest where over a quarter of all natural medicines can be found. Get ready to get dirty as we dig-in to grow, dissect, and manipulate plants to our will. Tentative Field Trips: Wegerzyn Gardens, Krohn Conservatory S.T.E.A.M TEAM: (July 17-21) What would Batman and Ironman be without their inventions? Just like Thor, we will travel through time to study the S.T.E.A.M. Team heroes of our past. Take a walk on the moon with Neil Armstrong, fly with the Wright Brothers. Channel your inner Green Lantern and shed light over evil with the inventions of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Learn more about the original member of the S.T.E.A.M Team, Leonardo Da Vinci and the contributions he made to music, art, astronomy, and engineering. Tentative Field Trips: National Museum of the United States Air Force, Carillon Historical Park HERO CENTRAL: (July 24-28) This week we take kids on awesome adventures alongside some of their favorite Bible heroes and discover the qualities that make us truly heroic in God. VBS Hero Central uses epic music, spectacular science, crafty crafts, heroic recreation, and fantastic Bible stories to help kids discover their strength in God! Full and extended day campers will expand on the fun throughout the day. Tentative Field Trips: Wilson Park Pool, Patricia Allen Park *Tuition for HERO CENTRAL VBS! week is $100* for Full Day and $126* for Extended Day. In lieu of our half-day camp this week we have our morning VBS. Separate registration is required and will be available in May. GOOD VS. EVIL: (July 31- August 4) No comic book superhero would be complete without an archenemy. The X-Men fought everyday against The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to protect the rights of everyday humans. Just like The Incredible Hulk, each one of us has good and evil inside of us. This week we will explore activists who work tirelessly every day to make the world a better place as we engage our own gifts and talents to share. Then we will strap up our superhero boots and go out into our own community to do some good of our own. Tentative Field Trips: Hillspring Nursing Home, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center .

  • The Funeral Service
The Service Guidebook for The Funeral Service St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church Tampa, Florida An Explanation of the Funeral Service God’s mercy is infinite and His goodness is beyond measure. This is what our Holy Church has always maintained, and thus believes and hopes that the loving Lord will be merciful even to the deceased. For this reason the hymnographers of the Orthodox Church have composed a most moving Funeral Service that is virtually a treasure-house of profound spiritual thoughts. From the earliest Christian times, psalms and hymns were sung to our life-giving God when a believer died. But the basic parts of the Funeral Service in use today can be traced mainly to the fifth century. The Funeral Service of the Orthodox Church is an example of how Orthodox theology influences the formation of a healthy understanding of the true nature of life and death. The Service accomplishes the following: a) utilizes the occasion of death to help us develop a more profound understanding of the meaning and purpose of life; b) helps us to deal with the emotions we have at the time of death and as time passes after the death; c) emphasizes the fact that death for the Christian is not the end, and affirms our hope in salvation and eternal life; d) recognizes the existence of the emotions of grief caused by the separation from a loved one, and encourages their expression. In the readings, prayers, and hymns of the Funeral Service a dialogue takes place between the faithful 71 and God and the deceased and God.
