Packauskas1 Abstract Forty eight species of Pentatomidae are listed as occurring in the state of Kansas, nine of these are new state records. A key to all species known from the state of Kansas is given, along with some notes on new state records. ____________________ The family Pentatomidae, comprised of mainly phytophagous and a few predaceous species, is one of the largest families of Heteroptera. Some of the phytophagous species have a wide host range and this ability may make them the most economically important family among the Heteroptera (Panizzi et al. 2000). As a group, they have been found feeding on cotton, nuts, fruits, veg- etables, legumes, and grain crops (McPherson 1982, McPherson and McPherson 2000, Panizzi et al 2000). -

The first records of the leaf-beetles, Cryptocephalus solivagus Leonardi & Sassi, 2001 and Chrysolina coerulans coerulans (Scriba, 1791) in the Latvian fauna are presented. General information on their distribution and ecology is given. The figures of the habitus and the sclerites of the endophallus of Cryptocephalus solivagus Leonardi & Sassi, 2001 are presented. Chrysolina herbacea Modulates Terpenoid Biosynthesis of Mentha aquatica L. Simon Atsbaha Zebelo, Cinzia M. Bertea, Simone Bossi, Andrea Occhipinti, Giorgio Gnavi, Massimo E. Maffei* Plant Physiology Unit, Department of Plant Biology, University of Turin, Innovation Centre, Turin, Italy Abstract Interactions between herbivorous insects and plants storing terpenoids are poorly understood. This study describes the ability of Chrysolina herbacea to use volatiles emitted by undamaged Mentha aquatica plants as attractants and the plant’s response to herbivory, which involves the production of deterrent molecules. Emitted plant volatiles were analyzed by GC- MS. The insect’s response to plant volatiles was tested by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Total RNA was extracted from control plants, mechanically damaged leaves, and leaves damaged by herbivores. The terpenoid quantitative gene expressions (qPCR) were then assayed. Upon herbivory, M. aquatica synthesizes and emits (+)-menthofuran, which acts as a deterrent to C. herbacea. Herbivory was found to up-regulate the expression of genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis. The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. An invasive species, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Sta˚ l), is spreading through the region. However, little is known about the complex of stink bug species associ- ated with corn and soybean in the midwestern United States. In this region, particularly in the more northern states, stink bugs have historically caused only infrequent impacts to these crops. To prepare growers and agri- cultural professionals to contend with this new threat, we provide a review of stink bugs associated with soybean and corn in the midwestern United States. -

It currently totals 764 hectares (1887 acres), of which the designated National Nature Reserve is 255 ha and this includes the 163 ha of the core fen habitat on deeper peats that have not been drained for agriculture. The land area of the reserve has increased by more than 2.5-fold since the early 1990s, with the purchase by the Trust of several areas of land which is in the process of restoration to create a much larger nature reserve for wildlife and people. The very rare Fen Violet was re-discovered in May 2014, at the very location on Verrall’s Fen at Wicken where it was last seen in 1999 (photo Pete Stroh). 1 Introduction Welcome to the latest annual edition of the Wicken Fen Wildlife Newsletter. However, collections in the Entomology Museum of Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing, and in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Michigan (UMMZ), Ann Arbor, indicate that collecting has been extensive throughout the state (Fig. 1). This species is also a nuisance due to overwintering in human- made structures. It has caused significant agricultural losses in recent years along the Atlantic seaboard of North America and in continental Europe.
