Augustana College – ALUMNI GROUP Dr. Rocki Wentzel & Dr. David O’Hara Tentative Itinerary for JUNE 2013 Day 1 ATHENS: Arrival to Athens. Enjoy a walk around the Plaka area before our group welcome dinner. Overnight with breakfast in Athens. Day 2 ATHENS: After breakfast, meet your guide for a walking visit of the Acropolis Museum. The Site of Acropolis, then the Areopagos and the Theatre of Dionysus. Lunch in Monastiraki area (on your own) to sample a Greek “gyro” and traditional local food. Afternoon visit of your own of the Ancient Agora and its Museum. Later, climb Lycabettus hill. Dinner (included) in selected restaurant in Plaka area. Overnight with breakfast in Athens (D) Day 3 ATHENS – SOUNION: Morning visit of the National Arch. Afternoon departure by private bus to visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. Optional visit of the St Paul’s nunnery and dinner in Glyfada at traditional Greek restaurant (B, D) Day 4 ATHENS – DELPHI: Departure by private bus and guide towards Delphi. Upon arrival, guided visit at the site of the famous oracle of the ancient times, and its unique Museum. Dinner at selected tavern. Overnight with breakfast in Arachova or Delphi. (B, D) Day 5 NAUPLION: Pass the Antirion – Rion Bridge and continue to the picturesque town of Nauplion. Check in at Hotel Marianna or similar. Walk around Nauplion and the old town. Overnight with breakfast in Nafplion. (B) Day 6 MYCENAE – NEMEA – NAFPLION: Morning departure by bus for guided visit of the Acropolis of Mycenae; visit the remnants of Agamemnon Palace, the Lions Gate, the Cyclopean walls and the Museum. Drive towards the town of Nemea, famous for its red “agiorgitiko” wine to reach a local winery for wine tasting with light lunch and tour of the facilities (included). Afternoon return to Nauplion, to stroll around the town, visit Palamidi fortress. Dinner in a traditional tavern with folk dance performance offered by ETC LLC. Overnight at Pension Marianna or similar. (B, L, D) Day 7 EPIDAURUS – METOCHI – HYDRA: Morning departure from hotel to reach Epidaurus to visit the famous Ancient theatre, known for its acoustics. Continue driving to Metochi to board the hydrofoil to the picturesque island of Hydra, where no cars are allowed. Time to explore the Saronic Gulf island of Hydra. Dinner (included) at a traditional tavern in Hydra. Overnight with breakfast at hotel Hydroussa. (B, D) Day 8 HYDRA – PIRAEUS – ATHENS: Morning guided visits at the Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum (located at the Cathedral), Hydra Historical Archives Museum and/or the Mansion of Lazaros Kountouriotis (a part of the National historical museum). Walking tour. Enjoy some free time on this picturesque, no cars island. Evening return to Athens by Hellenic Seaways Hydrofoil. Overnight in Athens. (B) Day 9 ATHENS-HERAKLION-KNOSSOS: Breakfast at the hotel. Early morning transfer to the airport for flight to Heraklion, Crete. Upon arrival, bus transfer to visit the Archaeological Museum for a guided visit and then to the Palace of Knossos for guided visit. Return to Heraklion for dinner (included) at a traditional tavern. Overnight with breakfast at Heraklion. (B, D) Day 10 HERAKLION – PHAISTOS-GORTYNA: Morning departure by bus for Gortyna, Phaisto and Agia Triada for guided visits. Stop in Matala for lunch (not included) and swim possibility. Continue to Heraklion for overnight (B) Day 11 CHANIA-ATHENS: Day trip to the picturesque town of Chania (stop on the way to Rehtymnon, to visit the Fortezza). Visit the old town, the port, the Arch. and/or Nautical Museum (if time permits). Traditional farewell lunch in Chania (instead of dinner). Evening flight to Athens. Overnight with breakfast at Herodion or similar. (B, L) Day 12 ATHENS – USA: Return to USA. (B) INCLUDES: Accommodation for eleven (11) overnights in 4 star or superior tourist class hotels in Athens, in Arachova or Delphi, in Nauplion, in Hydra and in Heraklion, Crete Daily breakfast buffet Eight (8) dinners or lunch including Welcome & Farewell in selected restaurants Winery visit and wine tasting including light lunch in a winery in Nemea area Folk-dancing demonstration in Nauplion Hydrofoil tickets r/t to the island of Hydra Airline tickets including all taxes from Athens to Heraklion and from Chania to Athens Transportation by modern air-conditioned motor coach as per itinerary including all driver’s expenses NOT INCLUDING: Airfare to / from Greece Meals and other services not mentioned Deposit of $500 per person due February 15, 2013 Balance payment due in April 2013 (pending on confirmation of travel dates) .
