By the end of 2009, 63 SUMMER SEASONS 2006-2009 EVOLUTION airlines were providing ATM incident reports to EVAIR. The airlines which contribute to EVAIR account for 50% of the overall European EXECUTIVE SUMMARY air traffic. The statistics in the EVAIR Safety Bulletin No 4 cover the summer Main trends periods (April - September) 2006 to 2009. Its initial capital was 32.5 million Belgian francs, divided into 65 000 shares with a nominal value of 500 francs. Numerous investment banks subscribed to these shares: the Société Générale de Belgique/Generale Maatschappij van België, for 9,420 shares; the Banque Léon Lambert, for 4,800; the Banque de Bruxelles firm underwrote 2,600 securities; Franz Philippson also took 2,600; Balser & Co., for 2,600; the Banque Liégeoise, for 2,000; Joseph Devolder, for 2,280; Jules Urban, Albert Thys, Georges de Laveleye, Jean Cousin and Hippolyte Lippens, for 1,800 each; R. de Bauer, Georges Brugmann, Ernest Grisar, Alfred Havenith and Alfred Simonis, each for 1,000 shares; the Caisse Commerciale de Bruxelles, Cassel & Cie, J. Matthieu & Fils, each for 800 securities. In addition, three foreign groups subscribed to the capital: a French group, allied to the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas (12,000 securities); a German group drawn by Deutsche Bank AG , from Berlin (7,000 securities); and a smaller group of British investors which included the brothers Stern, Ernest Cassel and Sir Vincent Caillard (2,500 securities). May 17, 2012 Hubert Horan 3:00 - 5:00 pm Aviation Expert and Independent Location: The Transportation Center Chambers Hall _ Lower Level Airline Consultant 600 Foster, Evanston Hubert Horan will provide insights into the future of the airline industry with special focus on alliances, metal neutrality and airlines mergers – now and in the future – drawing on his extensive expertise and experience in the aviation industry. Bio: Hubert Horan’s 25 year aviation career has been evenly split between consulting and airline management positions. He has been directly involved with multiple waves of airline mergers, alliances and industry restructuring, and since 2002 has been an independent consultant based in Phoenix. He has been directly involved with most of the major changes in international aviation since deregulation. In the 1980s he developed the original plan for the TWA-Ozark merger and also participated in the USAir– Piedmont and Continental-People Express mergers. He worked on a series of projects with Lufthansa and Alitalia to help them prepare for liberalization within Europe, and prepared the original plan for a Qantas- Australian-Air New Zealand merger. While at Northwest he led a massive international route network restructuring that drove the airline’s late 90s financial turnaround. He was responsible for the original development of the KLM-Northwest alliance network that served as the template for all subsequent immunized alliances. He spent four years in Zurich grappling with Swissair-Sabena, Europe’s first cross-border merger, and Swissair’s alliances with Delta and American. -

KIELER DISKUSSIONSBEITRAGE KIEL DISCUSSION PAPERS Global Strategic Alliances in Scheduled Air Transport — Implications for Competition Policy by Claus-Friedrich Laaser, Henning Sichelschmidt, Riidiger Soltwedel, and Hartmut Wolf Contents • In international aviation, global strategic alliances (GSAs) have in recent years become an important form of coop- eration between airlines. This cooperation has hit the antitrust nerve of the European Commission. Initially, the Commission had attempted to constrain both the market share of the major alliances in transatlantic air transport and their access to major European hubs (London and Frankfurt). The airlines maintain that they need alliances as an inevitable means to adapt to the changing environment in increasingly liberalized and globalized air transport markets in order to remain competitive and to fully realize their growth potential. The final verdict by the Commission will be published soon. • Though the existing airline alliances are not stable enough to threaten competition and the openness of airline mar- kets on a global scale, certain hubs or even city pairs might be in danger of being dominated by an individual alli- ance. This is all the more so as alliances in aviation — contrary to, e.g., strategic R&D alliances in manufacturing — are based on cooperating in a core area of the participants' commercial activities, which might end in collusion. On the other hand, alliances may indeed be regarded as an appropriate tool for internationally active firms to remain competitive. • For analyzing alliances' impact on competition, networks seem to be more appropriate than city pairs. On the networks level, complementary alliances usually improve overall welfare via lower fares in all submarkets, whereas parallel alliances tend to result in higher prices in the former parallel markets and lower in other markets due to network spillover effects.
