    Ohio Communication Journal Volume 52 – October 2014, pp. 1-19 Account Overdrawn: Articulating Consumerism in Animated Media Rekha Sharma In this critical analysis, I explore how animation has been used to promote consumerism and how it may be used to foster resistance to hegemonic messages about the power relationships between individuals, economic institutions, and societies. First, I address the contradictions presented by media hegemony and resistance strategies in a postmodern media culture. Second, I address specific themes present in cartoons with messages that challenge the American capitalist ethos, namely themes of corporate malfeasance, individual responsibility, and the importance of charitable efforts. Finally, I suggest areas for future research into animation as an area of resistance to media hegemony, outlining how further inquiry might aid communication scholars in understanding how audiences process media messages. Scholars have recognized the persuasive potential of animated cartoons to influence viewers’ attitudes and behaviors. Researchers have examined animated messages about racial stereotypes (e.g., Dobrow & Gidney, 1998; Lehman, 2001) and gender categorizations (e.g., Baker & Raney, 2007; Dobrow & Gidney, 1998) as well as politically motivated cartoons designed to build support for war (e.g., Kornhaber, 2007; Leab, 2006) or critique its causes and outcomes (e.g., Fisch, 2000; Knapp, 1996; Kornhaber, 2007). But less research has dealt with animated messages about consumerism, an issue that pervades nearly every form of media. Animated fare is distinct from other types of media in several important ways. Winick and Winick (1979) deemed cartoons the most universal TV format, widely popular because of their ability to meet a range of audience needs.

    The Global Reach of Scholastic School Book Fairs in the Philippines Classroom Libraries in New Orleans My Arabic Library in Lebanon English Language Learning Centers in China 2007 /2008 Annual Report Helping Children Around the World to Read and Learn Fellow Stockholders: We started the 2008 fiscal year with the launch of the largest and fastest selling book in history, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – and we marketed it enthusiastically and efficiently, making the first quarter of the year extremely strong. We also knew that we needed to use 2008 as a kind of fulcrum year for Scholastic, for the seventh Harry Potter was also the finale of the series. So we took several actions to reach our goal of attaining a 9 to 10 percent operating margin by FY’10. First, we built a new e-commerce system for School Book Clubs, based on the tried and true, seven year old COOL (Club Ordering Online) system. New COOL – which will launch in 2009 with a strong parent component - will enable teachers and parents to use a state-of-the-art e-commerce marketing system to order books and digital programs from Scholastic. Second, having further tested point-of-sale credit card machines in Book Fairs with successful results, we are expanding their use in 2009. Third, we completed development of System 44™ – a prequel to our established READ 180® program – which blends video and interactive computer technology to teach systematic phonics to students in grades 3-12 who have not learned to decode. This program, which is already getting an enthusiastic response from our customers, will launch in November 2008.
