Nietzsche, in the volumes which embody his philo sophical outlook, has called for a ‘transvalua tion of values’ in the realm of morality. Whatever the new century demands in this direction, I think it will be certain to ask for a revaluation of values as regards the criteria of the evidence on which its conclusions are based. It is not the object of these essays to draw final conclusions in the matters dealt with, but rather to suggest new views and ways of thought. Evidence has accumulated, especi ally in the region of psychical research, which must inevitably lead to the acceptance of facts quite antagonistic to the present scientific standpoint. It may be admitted that the evidence in many cases is not conclusive. At the same time it is often very strong. It is well to look a little ahead, and to ask our selves: If these things are so, hOw will it affect our relation to the accepted dogmas of present-day science? The essays in the present volume are not a little diverse in character, and the connect ing link between them may not always appear obvious; but in every case they have relation nearer or more remote to problems of religion or psychic enquiry. We reject piecemeal the very basis of our belief, only to reassert it comfortably enshrined in the ambiguous phrases of the philanthropist or metamorphosed by the allegorical interpretations of the Christian mystic. This change in our attitude towards religion, carefully veiled though it be by the retention of old names that have lost their meaning, is the measure of a revolution in the mode of thought of man which is in process of transforming all departments of our mental activity. In attempting to shut our eyes to its import we are only darkening counsel and giving rise to needless mis conceptions through fear of calling things by their real names.

AN IMAGE OF THE HISTORIC SOCIAL ORDERS IN POLAND IN SACRAL GOLDSMITHERY Katarzyna Bogacka Faculty of Social Sciences, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, ul. Nowoursynowska 166 02-787 Warsaw, Poland Abstract This article discusses the symbolic meaning behind the decoration on Bishop Wilhelm Atanazy Kloske’s episcopal ring dating from the nineteenth century, which has been preserved in the treasury of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Gniezno. It is unique due to the miniature figures which support a large amethyst. The figures represent the four estates (or social orders) of the realm: the clergy, the commoners, the knights and the burghers/bourgeoisie. Recently, it has been pointed out they are modelled directly on the nineteenth-century figures in Gniezno Cathedral which support the seventeenth-century reliquary of St. Adalbert (Pol: Wojciech), the principal patron saint of Poland. The author also discusses other objects which may have inspired the decoration: nineteenth-century French rings, and the works of Baroque goldsmiths in Poland, and also points out that the source of these iconographic figures can be found in nineteenth-century art. A more detailed analysis of the meaning behind these figures brings to mind the idea of unity and the patriotism of a traditional society built on the estates of the realm as a force capable of standing up against the country’s denationalization by the partitioning powers. The owner of the ring made this idea come to fruition through his social activities.

    Byzantine Catholic Tradition Introduction • The Byzantine Catholic Churches, also known as the Greek Catholic Churches, are the largest and perhaps the best-known group of Eastern Catholic Churches. The ordinary form of the Mass uses the Roman Missal (the book con- taining the ceremonies and prayers for Mass) that was revised and pub- lished after the Second Vatican Council. The extraordinary form of the Mass uses the Roman Missal published in 1962, before the revi- sions following Vatican II. In 2007, with his letter Summorum Pontif- icum, Pope Benedict XVI established the 1962 manner of celebrating Mass as a form that all priests of the Latin rite may offer without any special permission and coined the terms “ordinary form” and “extraor- dinary form.” The extraordinary form is often called the “old Latin Mass,” the “tra- ditional Latin Mass,” or the “Tridentine Mass.” Why celebrate the extraordinary form? As Pope Benedict says in Summorum Pontificum, “The Roman Missal promulgated by Paul VI is the ordinary expression of the ‘Lex orandi’ (Law of prayer) of the Catholic Church of the Latin rite. Nonethe- less, the Roman Missal promulgated by St. Pius V and reissued by Bl. Liturgy has become a controversial topic, so also the views and actions of Benedict XVI. Some claim that the pope is undoing the Second Vatican Council and forty-five years of progress in implementing the Council. Others claim that he is working to implement faithfully the vision of the Second Vatican Council, which means undoing the mistakes and misinterpretations of the past forty-five years and going back to what the Council really said. The truth is probably somewhere in between.
